In 1604, the Discalced Carmelite friars established their first mission in Persia, highlighting their impact on humanism and the exchange of knowledge across cultures. Upon their arrival in 1608, these missionaries focused their efforts on education and intercultural exchange, guided by the teachings of Mother Teresa of Jesus and Father Juan de Jesús María. They developed linguistic skills in Persian, Turkish, Armenian, and Chaldean, essential for their work in translating religious and scientific texts, and for the creation of a convent library rich in diverse works, including European literature and ancient Oriental manuscripts. This activity fostered an interreligious and cultural dialogue. Thus, the Carmelites acted not only as evangelizers but also as cultural mediators in a context of political and religious tensions, significantly contributing to the legacy of humanism and global understanding through the exchange of books between Europe and Persia and vice versa.
The Tractatus de neutralitate from Rodrigo Sánchez de Arévalo, unedited until today, is an extremely valuable testimony to know and understand the crisis that the Catholic Church faced in the turbulent schismatic context developed at the Council of Basel (1432-1445). To demonstrate his rejection towards german’s neutrality and defend the legitimacy of a single and unquestionable pope, Arévalo uses numerous textual quotations and paraphrases a whole plethora of authors and authorities, such as Latin Fathers of the Church and the Sacred Scriptures, but also pontiffs and classical sources like Aristoteles. Among them, the works of biblical exegesis (Lyra’s Postilla and the Glosa ordinaria) and the compendium of canon law Summa Aurea stand out, both absolutely unusual in Arévalo’s production. Our aim is to analyze what were the sources that fed Arévalo’s discourse, how the different literary, philosophical, theological and legal influences and references converged in this figure and context, in order to understand the role that tradition and transmission of these authors played in the birth of Castilian Humanism in the 15th century.
Bizarre Love Triangle: Generative AI, Art and Kitsch
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has immersed the mainstream culture, expanded AI’s creative user base and catalysed numerous economic, legal and aesthetic issues that stir a lively public debate. Unsurprisingly, in the hands of amateurs and hobbyists, GenAI tools proliferate kitsch, but various shortcomings also induce kitschy overtones into the more ambitious, professional artists’ production with GenAI. We explore them in this paper. Following the introductory outline of kitsch in digital culture and AI art, we review GenAI artworks that manifest interrelated expressive flaws, such as the topical oversimplification, mimetics, oversaturated aesthetics, unrestrained formal manipulation, recycling of nebulous or misleading tropes, and unacknowledged similarities, all marked by the overreliance on AI as a cultural referrer. We discuss these kitsch-engendering blunders in the light of GenAI art’s position in the art market and the AI industry, and point out that artists who work with GenAI continue AI art’s worrisomely steady tendency toward uncritically embracing techno-cultural trends, with potentially considerable implications: the further adulteration of AI discourse and, arguably, the corruption of artistic literacy. We emphasize that recognizing the facets of this tendency, comprehending their functions and anticipating their unintended effects is crucial for reaching relevance and responsibility in AI art
WTHC: Cluster de enoturismo e rumos futuros
Wine tourism is growing worldwide, assuming a significant share of overall tourism and hospitality; therefore, scholars are attracted to understanding what drives wine tourists’ behaviours. This study aims to analyse and cluster wine tourism research and propose directions for future research. A systematic literature review followed by a text-mining approach explored conceptual developments in wine tourism and hospitality. A full-text analysis of 230 articles was conducted to (1) present the WTHC wine tourism and hospitality clustering of core topics that emerged from the literature and (2) suggest directions for future research. The literature on wine tourism and hospitality employs more quantitative than qualitative approaches, utilising structural equations or regression analysis to explore the data. Seven topic clusters were found representing the core research topics on wine tourism and hospitality. Academics tend to employ well-known theories from psychology, sociology, and the economy. Future research topics include the development of new theories, constructs, contexts, and methodologies applied to wine tourism
Digital communication of museums in Porto and Northern Portugal
Recent years have seen an increase in the number of assistive technologies that museums use to engage visitors. Information and Communication Technologies (ITC) offer new opportunities in the museum environment, whether indoors or outdoors, adopting interactive cultural experiences, with the aim of being accessible to all visitors. In this sense, the main aim of this research was to identify and analyze the digital tools and communication techniques used by museums, both on the web and on site, which promote Digital Communication. In the first phase, to analyze the museums\u27 websites, a matrix of variables was created to define Digital Communication, based on the digital tools and communication techniques identified in the literature review. The analysis resulted in a matrix that defines Digital Communication in three dimensions: Visibility, Usability and Interactivity. For each of these dimensions, variables were identified that could be observed and tested, so that they could be considered active on museum websites. In a second phase, an online questionnaire was applied to all the museums in the sample in order to gather additional information. The results obtained from the analysis of the websites are lower than expected, as none of the websites identified all the variables mentioned. Analysis of the questionnaires shows that there is a greater concern for the diversity of visitors, due to the combination of multi-format communication techniques with digital tools
Analysing the influence of Generation Z on destination loyalty: Tourist satisfaction as a key factor
This study aims to examine the influence of Generation Z on tourist destination loyalty with tourist satisfaction as a mediator variable. The two exogenous variables added are Digital experience and Environmental awareness, both of which are considered to have a significant influence on the behaviour of Generation Z travellers. Using the path analysis method, this study examines how these two variables, along with tourist satisfaction, influence destination loyalty. Data was collected through an online survey completed by respondents from Generation Z, who had travelled in the past 12 months. A total of 387 responses were analysed to evaluate the conceptual model using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) techniques. Results show that Digital experience has a positive effect on tourist satisfaction, confirming that engaging and easy digital interactions play an important role in Generation Z\u27s travel experience. The correlation between environmental awareness and contentment is substantial, suggesting that environmental awareness is a key determinant of satisfaction for Generation Z. Empirical evidence has demonstrated that tourist satisfaction plays a significant role in mediating the relationship between the two external factors and the loyalty towards a place. This suggests that while digital experiences and environmental awareness directly influence satisfaction, their effects on destination loyalty are mediated through perceived satisfaction levels. This research provides new insights into the behaviour of Generation Z travellers and suggests that destination marketing strategies should emphasise providing satisfying digital experiences and eco-friendly practices to increase destination loyalty
Antigone, woman of no
The women’s “no” are few, but exemplary: to sexual harassment, to husband suitors (Penelope, Danaids, Daunian women) and to husbands (in Lysistrata), to media and censorial power (Penelope, Electra) and to political power like that of Antigone against the lex of Creon, illegal because contra legem.I “no” delle donne sono pochi, ma esemplari: a molestie sessuali, a pretendenti mariti (Penelope, Danaidi, donne daune) e a mariti (nella Lisistrata), al potere mediatico e censorio (Penelope, Elettra) e a quello politico come quello di Antigone contro la lex di Creonte, illegale perché contra legem
Empatia e resistência: Antígona na dramaturgia feminina actual
The figure of Antigone - like all the mythemes of the Oedipal family, reformulated so many times up to the present day - presents different lines of conflict derived from problematic regimes in the family, philosophical-moral and socio-political domains. There are several theatre texts that outline the premises and consequences of the search for a fair ethical and emotional path in dilemmatical situations; and they elaborate them in multifaceted configurations that at the same time are symptomatic of the conditions and concerns of literary writing, and very specifically of the textual production of male and female authors. In our contribution, we examine how three Ibero-Romanic female playwrights from recent decades deal with the possibility of essentially human empathy becoming political contestation We discuss the particular dialectics in which the plays develop the question of the legitimacy of such a form of resistance, sometimes vindicating it, sometimes questioning it. We focus on Griselda Gambaro’s Antígona furiosa (Argentine, 1986), Hélia Correia’s Perdição (Portugal, 1991) and Itzíar Pascual’s Antígona (Spain, 2018) to find out how natural right reacts to the power and authority of the judicial law in these plays, why it succumbs, and what the specific implications of the gender category are in conflicts of this nature.
The fertile myth of Antigone has been evoked in contemporary Brazilian literary space, both in creation and criticism, especially within the literary series that explores the fictional representation of the damage resulting from the violence of the civil-military dictatorship (1964- 1985). The trauma of the politically disappeared, tied to the prohibition of funeral rites and the resulting deprivation of grief and mourning for their families, has driven 21st-century Brazilian fiction writers and scholars to revisit the gesture of Ismene’s sister in Sophocles’ tragedy, who challenges the authority of Thebes in defense of the inalienable right to bury a loved one. Portugal celebrates Antigone’s defiance as a symbol of the “50 years of April.” In Brazil, however, the sense of justice that Antigone embodies takes on a darker resonance as we mark 60 years since our April, when a coup d’état shattered the democratic order, leaving deep wounds in the nation’s social fabric that have yet to heal. I propose a critical reading of the political meaning in the novels K., relato de uma busca (2011) by Bernardo Kucinski and Antes do passado (2012) by Liniane Haag Brum, wherein both writers, echoing Antigone’s act of love, create a symbolic grave through their words. This allows them to bid an honorable farewell to their respective disappeared loved ones—Kucinski’s sister and Brum’s uncle. Based on the concept of “restitutive poetics” (Vecchi, 2014), I analyze how the narratives weave fictional fractures and gaps within historical discourse. This enables literature, through its unique resources, to piece together fragments of the social memory of crimes from a past that remains repressed in the national imagination, and which therefore returns as a ghost to haunt political life in the present.O mito fecundo de Antígona tem sido evocado no espaço literário brasileiro contemporâneo, tanto no âmbito da criação, quanto no da crítica, sobretudo no interior da série literária identificada com a elaboração ficcional dos danos decorrentes da violência da ditadura civil-militar (1964/1985).
