Montecuccoli’s Fame, or: A Diplomat’s Military Reputation at the Swedish Court in 1654

    No full text
This article is about the weight of military fame in the inaugural audience of Imperial general and diplomat Raimondo Montecuccoli (1609–1680) at the Swedish court in 1654. The assumption is, that Montecuccoli’s military fame was a resource for him as a diplomat. Military fame was a resource because it was symbolic capital that mediated Montecuccoli’s reputation in the language of symbolic communication. How military fame worked in the language of symbolic communication is discussed by looking at Raimondo Montecuccoli’s Swedish journal. Montecuccoli’s own account is contrasted by the Swedish journal of the English ambassador Bulstrode Whitelocke (1605–1675), who was at the Swedish court at the same time. This article is about the weight of military fame in the inaugural audience of Imperial general and diplomat Raimondo Montecuccoli (1609–1680) at the Swedish court in 1654. British Jewry and the Attempted Boycott of Nazi Germany, 1933–1939

    No full text
The article deals with the boycott of Nazi Germany, which the British Jews attempted in the years 1933–1939. The main question is why the Jewish boycott in Britain culminated in the summer of 1933 and why it was followed by years of stagnation. To what extent did the boycott movement have the chance to succeed is another key question as the main goal of the movement was nothing less significant than removing Hitler’s regime and thus preventing the war. The study is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on the initial phase of the boycott (1933–1934) and emphasises the fact that the main organisation representing British Jews, The Board of Deputies of British Jews, refused to make the boycott official. The second part points out gradual stagnation and the boycott’s downturn in the years 1935–1939. Although the Berlin Olympics in 1936 would have been a great incentive for the movement, they were not boycotted in the end. Then the movement was further weakened by the British policy of appeasement. The third phase of the study shows how the representatives of British Jewry attempted to influence the opinion of the government, especially the Foreign Office. Nevertheless, they failed in swinging political opinion towards the support of German Jews or the idea of a boycott. It became clear that the success of the boycott movement strongly depended on the official support; however, the mainstream political opinion preferred negotiations and agreement with Germany. The whole article is significantly based on yet unpublished sources from British and German archives. The article deals with the boycott of Nazi Germany, which the British Jews attempted in the years 1933–1939. No full text
The present study focuses on documenting the beginnings of the diplomatic career of one of the most important imperial diplomats, Dominik Andreas Count von Kaunitz (1655–1705) and on defining the information that was learned within the context of the current research. Researchers have already studied the peak period of Kaunitz’ diplomatic career in the late 1690’s, when he served in the Hague as the imperial envoy and was subsequently appointed as the Reichsvizekanzler. His previous activities, however, have so far not aroused much interest, though it was the 80’s and the beginning of the 90’s of the 17th century that were crucial in regard to his future direction. Based on the research that was carried-out in the Moravský zemský archiv in Brno (Moravian Land Archive, in the Kaunitz and Dietrichstein Family Archives) and in the archives in Vienna (in Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv and Allgemeines Verwaltungsarchiv) and also in the Munich archive (Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv) attention will be paid not only to what, when and where Count von Kaunitz discussed during his journeys, but also the manner in which he acted and the strategies that he chose to employ. This study should therefore reveal not only this diplomat’s mental world but also his everyday life and his social background. The present study focuses on documenting the beginnings of the diplomatic career of one of the most important imperial diplomats, Dominik Andreas Count von Kaunitz (1655–1705) and on defining the information that was learned within the context of the current research. No full text
The paper is focused on the new structure and dividing of the European airspace and its possible future benefits. This ambitious project can change and improve travelling time in air passenger transport, of course in case of realization. At maximum load in the long run can serve multiple lines, which corresponds with the expected increase of demand for air transport. Future positive effects would be reflected in air fares and shortening waiting times at airports. Whole target is to create functional and effective system enabling cost savings. Secondly, this system will be useful for the benefit of further increasing operational safety of air transport and systematic reduction of emissions from air traffic

INDUSTRY 4.0: DIGITALIZATION CHALLENGES IN MARITIME SHIPPING

    No full text
The broader concept ‘digitalization’ stands for increasing applications of digital technologies by organizations, industries or societies. While the first term is an underlying condition for it, the later has gained attention as digitalization of all aspects in supply chains, including maritime shipping. The paper analyses and identifies deficits when it comes on negotiable bills of lading, despite the overal rapidly developing legal foundation enabling paperless transport documentation. The applicable transport law does not facilitate ‘digitization´. The implementation efforts of ‘digitalization’ are hindered by inherent operational risks and liability burden or actors involved who are not able to adapt to the evolving new digital economy

    No full text
This study is essentially aimed at solving of two sets of questions in connection with the episcopal town of Svitavy in the first decade of the 17th century. First, it attempts to reveal more general trends of the development of Moravian liege towns of the mentioned time period. It primarily focuses on the problem of contacts between town people and country background in the intentions of marriage strategies. The research assignment is to find out what intensity of entering into marriages was between town dwellers and villagers, and how important role, in this respect, the boundaries of a relevant domain or its internal circles played. The paper also deals with the problem of marriage immigration and emigration, and at the same time it tries to capture the prevailing model, taking into account the legal status of residential units, where the migration to the town came from and where, outside from the town, it was directed, and marital status of a groom and a bride, too. The second group of the questions is connected with the criticism of the basic input sources (registers and wedding contracts), their information potential and possibilities of their interpretation. This study is essentially aimed at solving of two sets of questions in connection with the episcopal town of Svitavy in the first decade of the 17th century.
