An Evaluation of the Performance of Top-of-Rail Lubricants and Friction Modifiers
A relatively new trend in the management of the friction between the wheel and rail is the application of so-called friction modifiers or lubricants on top of the rail in order to optimise coefficient of adhesion. The aim of this paper is to present this issue and to demonstrate the possibilities of laboratory evaluation of performance parameters of top-of-rail lubricants and friction modifiers. Important implications for the prescription of their application are discussed
Dramatic transfers: Mural painting and religious theatre in the Western Alps during the sixteenth century
In the specific context of the late medieval Alps, it has been demonstrated that artistic exchanges and the circulation of iconographic and stylistic patterns were quite common. Transference can take place between different media, like religious theatrical mysteries and painted works of art such as alpine chapels’ wall paintings. This paper explores the circulation of theatrical mysteries through the Alps between Provence, Brianzonese and Piemonte. It analyses some examples of iconographic transference, like composition, precise gesturing, attributes and accessories but also characters designation. A series of accurate matches is thus selected in vices and virtues wall paintings and in some saints’ painted cycles. It demonstrates also correspondences in the expressionism and dolorism in some episodes of saint Anthony’s life. With the analysis of two saints’ cycles (saints Andrew and Bartholomew), it will conclude trying to explain how to find the presence or the absence of dialogue between religious mysteries and wall paintings. In the specific context of the late medieval Alps, it has been demonstrated that artistic exchanges and the circulation of iconographic and stylistic patterns were quite common. Reduction of Guiding Forces in Curves by Means of Active Wheelset Steering
Based on the computer simulations the potential effect of various systems for reduction of guiding forces in track curves for electric locomotives are compared. From this comparison, the greatest potential is shown by active wheelset steering, which is further examined in the article in terms of detecting the radius of the track curve, control algorithms and sensitivity to variable track parameters and vehicle speed. The proposed system of active wheelset steering is then tested by computer simulations of vehicle run in a real section of a track with a length of 21 km and the results are compared with a vehicle in a conventional arrangement
Vaccines, Spas and Yellow Fever: Expert Physicians, Professional Honour and the State in the Mid-Nineteenth Century
The nineteenth century was a period when the modern sciences claimed they were the best way of improving the lives of the people and attaining useful knowledge about the world. At the same time, it was an era when the Ancien Régime, a plural world of hierarchically organised communities, was morphing into a capitalist society based on equality before the Law and the free competition of goods and ideas. Our article focuses on several aspects of the physicians’ fight for professional consolidation in a changing world: the patterns of institutionalisation of medicine and healthcare as well as the dynamics of professionalisation of healthcare, including the masculinisation of authority and the public acknowledgement of expert authority in connection with the growing legitimacy – and politicisation – of scientific discourse, but also with practices reaffirming the honour and social status of physicians as a profession. We approach this vast topic from a European perspective, tracing trans-imperial and transnational trends and including the colonial dimensions, as well as the interaction of European powers and subjects with extra-European states and peoples. The nineteenth century was a period when the modern sciences claimed they were the best way of improving the lives of the people and attaining useful knowledge about the world. Lost (and Found) in Translation: The Reception of Pinel’s and Esquirol’s Psychiatric Theories and the Conformation of Melancholy, Hypochondria, Mania and Hysteria in Spain, 1800–1855
In the history of psychiatry in Spain, the first half of the nineteenth century has been considered a period of uncritical reception of the theories of Philippe Pinel and Jean Étienne Esquirol. In this article I strive to problematise the diffusionist assumptions of this thesis, studying the participation of local agents in the circulation and reception of medical knowledge. Through a comparative analysis of the paratexts and the modifications made to the translations of the works of these authors, I intend to expose how the theories of Pinel and Esquirol were unified in the Spanish case. Through a concrete analysis of the modification of the diagnoses of melancholy, hypochondria, mania and hysteria, I intend to expose the variations that were applied to medical knowledge in its reception in Spain in order to adapt it to the frameworks of local medicine. Lastly, I intend to expose the methodological advantages offered by conceiving the translations of works and books as cultural products whose meaning is constructed in its place of rception, and not in the place of original publication. In the history of psychiatry in Spain, the first half of the nineteenth century has been considered a period of uncritical reception of the theories of Philippe Pinel and Jean Étienne Esquirol. RESEARCH ON THE USE OF ECO-DRIVING IN CITY TRAFFIC
As it is commonly known, during the operation of vehicles, their operational parameters change, related to the influence of working factors, the current road situation or wear processes of vehicle components. Currently, for many years there has been a discussion on improving the environmental properties of motor vehicles, taking into account technical, legal and operational factors. The article presents selected research results of a vehicle using the eco-driving technique in city traffic on the so-called routine route in a selected area of the city of Lublin in south-eastern Poland. The tests were carried out on a passenger car with a spark ignition engine powered by gasoline. The obtained test results focus on the influence of selected driving parameters, such as: average speed, driving time, mileage, road characteristics, number of stops, number of brakes. The conducted research indicates the possibility of using eco-driving in city traffic and gives positive results
IS THE INFLUENCE OF AN ANCHOR IN TRANSPORT SAME FOR EVERY GENERATION? Case study in deciding on the ticket price
There are many articles available about cognitive biases that show why people often make irrational decisions. Cognitive biases can come in the form of decoy effects, paradoxes of choice, halo effects, or availability heuristics. This paper deals with the effects anchoring or imprinting effect. People tend to be influenced by random numbers that they see before making their decisions about prices or purchases. The question is if all generations are sensitive in the same way or if there is any difference between generations when it comes to the anchoring effect. This question is answered through research on decision-making in relation to plane ticket prices. Subjects were surveyed by demographics such as their generation. ANOVA was one method used that showed that younger generations were more sensitive to the anchor than the older ones
Testing of Draw- and Buffing Gear Components on Dynamic Test Stand at the Faculty of Transport Engineering of the University of Pardubice
This contribution deals with tests of components of draw- and buffing gear of railway vehicles realized at the Faculty of Transport Engineering of the University of Pardubice, especially in framework of student’s projects and theses. In the beginning, the attention is paid to the tests of dynamic characteristics of elastomer suspension components of draw gears and buffers. The tests were performed in order to create a mathematical model of these components for application in multi-body simulations for investigation of longitudinal train dynamics effects, because a description of these components only by their static characteristics seems to beinsufficient in certain situations. Besides to that, a preparation of tensometric screw coupling for measurement of traction forces is introduced in the paper. This measuring device will be applied especially in further research of running resistance of railway vehicles as well as at the experimental verification of results of the longitudinal train dynamics simulations
