Vzdelanosť šľachtických žien v ranonovovekom Uhorsku na príklade Judity Balassovej
The early modern period witnessed an increase in women’s writing as a result of the significant spread of literacy. Among the sources of a personal nature, correspondence is the most useful for research, especially the letters of the nobility, as these are the most widespread and thus the most accessible type of egodocuments from this period. The constant threat from the Ottoman presence in East-Central Europe meant that men were frequently away from home, whether for military or political reasons, and so the agenda of looking after the family estate fell into the hands of women. Being able to read, write, and do basic mathematics thus became a necessity for women to be adequately able to look after the family estates. The paper deals with the issue of women’s education in the early modern period on the basis of an analysis of the correspondence of Baroness Judith Balassa (c. 1630–c. 1685), the second wife of Stephen I. Koháry (1616–1664), who, after his sudden death, had to take care of the family property and provide for her descendants. The paper examines the matter of the education and upbringing of noble girls in this period. Subsequently, the educational level of Judith Balassa is characterised by analysing her written expression and comparing it with that of other literate aristocratic women. Alongside this, attention is also paid to the question of the linguistic competence of Judith Balassa and her closest family members.

Johannes Nádherný in the Fight Against Venereal Diseases
Few diseases left such a mark on the culture of the long nineteenth century as syphilis, and yet so little is known about how the people who contracted it dealt with it. This study provides a reflection on the disease through the eyes of a patient, Baron Johannes Nádherný of Borutín, whose openness in his letters and numerous descriptions of the course of his treatment have made it possible to reconstruct his life with syphilis. Nádherný’s case is contextualised by his membership of the German Society for Combatting Venereal Diseases. It was found that thanks to the discourse of the German Society Johannes had great confidence in the developing modern medicine. He took a thorough interest in his treatment, actively seeking out leading dermatovenerologists, and as a result was able to build up a wide network of the most prestigious doctors. With those doctors he consulted on the most advanced treatment options for venereal diseases and had control over his therapy

Hyperreality and the Mass Production of Destiny: Baudrillardian Simulacra in Never Let Me Go
Existing scholarship on Never Let Me Go has primarily engaged with its ethical, philosophical, and socio-political implications, particularly regarding cloning, human rights, and the commodification of life. While critics such as Rachel Carroll and Amit Marcus have examined the novel’s deconstruction of normative discourses on humanity, and Shameem Black has explored its engagement with multiculturalism and globalization, insufficient attention has been given to its postmodern ontological dimensions. This article addresses this critical gap by applying Jean Baudrillard’s theories of hyperreality, simulation, and simulacra to Ishiguro’s dystopian narrative. It argues that Never Let Me Go functions as a meditation on the dissolution of reality, wherein clones exist as third- and fourth-order simulacra — entities that mask the absence of a profound reality. Through an analysis of Hailsham’s institutional mechanisms, the novel’s representations of nostalgia, and the commodification of identity, this study illuminates the ways in which Ishiguro’s work critiques the hyperreal structures that define late capitalist societies. Ultimately, this article demonstrates how Never Let Me Go challenges conventional distinctions between the authentic and the artificial, exposing the mechanisms through which contemporary societies manufacture consent and obscure the erosion of human agency
Geography of the Narrative Self in Stuart Turton’s The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle
This paper examines how Stuart Turton\u27s The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (2018) engages in ongoing debates concerning embodied consciousness and personal identity yet to be resolved by current theories linking mind and body. The analysis integrates a neuroscientific approach (Greenfield), narrative self theory (Dennett, Schechtman), pre-narrative self-consciousness (Zahavi), embodied narrative (Brandon), transpersonal psychology (Grof), and Eastern philosophical concepts (Blackmore, Watts) with close textual analysis to study how Turton\u27s protagonist navigates self-definition across multiple bodily experiences. His behaviour and actions are influenced by emotions, skills and reasoning that he perceives as temporarily acquired from the body and mind of his current \u27host’. Although initially it may appear paradoxical, Turton\u27s narrative constructs a complex geography of personal identity, suggesting that consciousness persists independently of specific embodiment, while remaining fundamentally shaped by bodily experience. This paper examines the capacity of speculative fiction to engage with philosophical problems of the mind-body relationship and to advocate for alternative approaches to selfhood and embodied consciousness
Organisation of Traction Vehicle Maintenance in the Conditions of a European Leasing Company
Railpool is one of Europe\u27s market leaders in the field of traction rail vehicle leasing, including responsibility for their maintenance. Ensuring safe operations across a number of European countries presents a number of challenges and risks, that need to be compensated for by appropriate means of maintenance organisation. One of the significant factors in international traffic is the different wear of the wheel profiles. Examples of infrastructure with critical development are used to show the differences in the nature of the wheel profile wear and their influence on vehicle operation and maintenance
Innovations in Non-Destructive Testing of Railway Freight Wagon Wheelset Axles
The article focuses on the diagnostics of railway freight wagon wheelset axles in terms of non-destructive testing within maintenance. It describes the current standard approach, including the advantages and risks that led to the research and development of a new testing device
