    Get PDF
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease that develops due to defective insulin secretion and is frequently associated with insulin resistance. T2DM patients are prone to diabetic dyslipidemia, which puts them at risk of developing macrovascular (stroke, peripheral vascular disease and coronary artery disease) and microvascular (nephropathy, neuropathy and retinopathy) diseases. This is a cross sectional study conducted at Tertiary care Teaching Hospital over a period of 1 year. Total 70 patients of Type 2 diabetes mellitus were taken for the study after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, and after obtaining written and informed consent from them. HbA1c and Fasting Lipid profile: Total cholesterol, Triglycerides, HDL and VLDL cholesterol were measured. In our study, among 70 Type 2 diabetic individuals included in this study, 41 were male and 29 were female. Distribution of Glucose Triad results of FBS, PPBS and HbA1c levels of patients presented as Mean±SD, mean FBS was 173.59±39.64, mean PPBS was 234.59±94.59 and mean HbA1c was 7.78±0.83. Our study accomplished that HbA1c has a direct, significant correlation with total cholesterol, triglyceride, VLDL, and LDL among the lipid profile

    Get PDF
One of the most opportunistic mycosis globally is the Candida ssp., which is considered as the most agent that cause nosocomial urinary tract infections (UTIs), oral candidiasis and genitourinary candidiasis. This study included 100 samples of Iraqi subjects suffering from urinary tract infections. Identification of Candida have been done by different methods such as; characteristic of colony on culture, gram stain, and microscopically. This study aimed to isolation and identification of Candida spp from urine sample of UTI patients and find the relevance of ages and blood group of patients with the infections rate, also determine the effect of age on ESR and CRP levels in the patients. The results showed the higher frequency of blood group was the O- group (33%) and the lower frequency shown by the blood group O+ (2%). Candida species showed higher frequency of C. albicans (88%) followed by 4% of C. krusei, 3% of C. glabrata, then both C. guilliermondii and C. parapsilosis were shown (1%)

Role of high sensitive C-reactive protein as a marker in assessing severity of asthma

    Get PDF
Increased serum high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in asthma and its association with disease severity has been investigated in many studies. This study aimed to determine serum hs-CRP status in asthma versus healthy controls and to examine its ability in predicting asthma control. This is a comparative-descriptive and observational study was carried out in the TB & Respiratory Medicine, N.C Medical College and Hospital over a period of 6 months. Total 70 patients (both old and newly diagnosed cases) were selected for the study for case group patients were on maintenance treatment including inhaled corticosteroids and bronchodilators according to the guideline treatment of asthma. In our present study, a total of 70 patients were included out of which 38 (57.4%) were males. In our study, most of the patients were 51-70 years i.e., 38 out of 70 (54.2%), followed by 31-50. The mean hs CRP of Case group patients are 4.31±1.46 and in control group patients 0.83±0.07. Pulmonary function test using Spirometer was s done in all the patients (case and control). The FEV1 values are compared against hsCRP values. Statistical significance is assessed using Spearman’s correlation. Case group patients showing highly significant negative correlation of hsCRP with FEV1

Comparison of haemodynamic response to induction with propofol versus etomidate in patients scheduled for elective surgery

    Get PDF
Introduction: Laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation are harmful stimuli that can produce adverse response in the cardiovascular, respiratory and other physiological systems. These changes are reflected in haemodynamic parameters which can be fatal for patients with low cardiac reserve and may alter the balance between myocardial oxygen supply and demand and as a result, myocardial ischemia can be precipitated. This observational comparative study was conducted to compare the haemodynamic effects of Propofol and Etomidate during induction of general anaesthesia in patients scheduled for elective surgery. Materials and Methods: 58 patients of American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) physical status  I and II of age group 18-60 years scheduled for elective surgeries under general anaesthesia were randomly assigned in two groups (n=28). Group P received injection Propofol (2.5mg/kg) and group E received injection Etomidate (0.3mg/kg) during induction. Hemodynamic parameters were recorded at various time intervals. Statistical analysis was done using software (MedCalc Version 20.014). P value was considered significant if p £ 0.05. Results: Demographic profile was comparable in both the groups. Hemodynamic parameters at baseline and after premedication were comparable

    Get PDF
Aims and Objectives: To do comparative study between conventional and suture less circumcision Materials and Methods: The study enrolled 26 cases in total. 13 cases of conventional circumcision and 13 cases of suture less circumcision. The results were compiled and analyzed. Results: Majority of study subjects belonged to age group 26-35 yrs followed by 36-45 yrs. Both groups were compared on basis of - Diagnostic parameters (BXO, congenital phimosis, recurrent balanoposthitis, recurrent UTI, and others).Intra-op parameters (Mean operative time, mean blood loss, mean pain score) Post-op parameters (Mean healing time, mean satisfaction, post-operative stay) We observed that complications such as bleeding, wound dehiscence, oedema and infection were seen in conventional circumcision and no such complications were seen in suture less circumcision. Conclusion- Today is the era of 'Wireless' in technology and here comes era of 'Suture less' in field of surgery. Every surgeon wishes for better wound healing with better cosmesis without complications and early back to activities. All this is possible with use of staplers for circumcision. Stapler circumcision is associated with short operative time, lower blood loss volume, less pain, few post-operative complications and less post-operative stay

Predictive value of HbA1c for in-hospital adverse prognosis in COVID-19

    Get PDF
HbA1c is considered the gold standard for evaluating blood glucose level and provides an average value of the past 3 months, and high HbA1c level is related to the risk of complications in diabetic patients . However, whether the increase in HbA1c level is related to high inflammation, hypercoagulability, and mortality in COVID-19 patients has not been reported. We performed a retrospective study to evaluate the effect of high HbA1c level on mortality and inflammation in COVID-19 patients with abnormal glucose metabolism.. Prognosis may be more sinister in patients with higher Hba1c than in patients with lower Hba1c. More research data and knowledge are currently being collected to improve our insights into this constellation and to guide therapies in clinical reality. It’s believed that the virus damages certain kinds of cells — known as beta cells — that are found in the pancreas. They are found within another kind of cell known as an islet cell (more on islet cells below). The destruction of these beta cells prevent the body from making insulin — triggering hyperglycemia (or high blood sugar)
