A study of serum testosterone as a prognostic indicator in patients with respiratory failure on mechanical ventilation

    Get PDF
Patients on mechanical ventilation tend to have a multitude of biochemical changes, many due to adrenal suppression or functional adrenal insufficiency Abnormal levels of gonadal steroids poses significant physiologic effects in critically ill patients. Hypotestosteronemia, defined as a serum total testosterone level <250 ng/dL (<8.7 nmol/L) or free testosterone level <0.75 ng/dL (<0.03 nmol/L), is a common finding among male patients with critical illness. In this this study we determine if serum testosterone can be used as a prognostic indicator in patients with respiratory failure, on mechanical ventilation. This is a prospective observational study done over a period of 18 months at a tertiary care canter in Mysore. Study participants included male patients admitted to ICU of JSS Hospital with documented acute respiratory failure on arterial blood gas analysis (ABG), who were mechanically ventilated for more than 24 hours. Blood sample was collected at 24 hours and 72 hours post intubation and serum testosterone levels were estimated using Electro Chemiluminescence assay. Our results indicate 90.5% of the patients had low testosterone levels at 24 hours, whereas 97.1% of the patients had hypotestosteronemia at 72 hours post intubation

This experiment was carried out in a plastic house belonging to the olive nursery, the Department of Gardens and Afforestation, Amanat Baghdad for the agricultural season 2020 /2021 to study the effect of chemical fertilization (NPK) equivalent to four concentrations (0,50,100,150)mg.l-1 and foliar spray gibberellic acid (0,100,200)mg.l-1 and Benzyl Adenine (0,100,200)mg.l-1 in the growth and flowering of Angelina-class shrub flower plants. The plants were fertilized with NPK compound fertilizer equivalent to irrigation water throughout the trial period as needed, while the foliar spraying of plants by growth regulators gibberellic acid and benzyl adenine was done in succession, where the first spray was dated 1/12/2020 and the second spray age dated 5/1/2020 and the third workshop dated 3/2/2020. The experiment was carried out according to the Randomized Complete Block Design (R.C.B.D.) with three replications and the averages were compared using Duncan's multiple ranges test at a probability level of 5%

Immediate restorative rehabilitation of fractured tooth by fragment reattachment: A case report

    Get PDF
Dental trauma commonly leads to fracture of anterior teeth which affects the aesthetics and even has a psychological impact on the patient. Management of crown fractures depends on multiple factors like extent, pattern and the restorability of fracture to maintain the occlusion, aesthetics, and prognosis. If the fractured fragment is available, re-attachment is the most feasible option which is simple and economic providing good and long-lasting aesthetics, maintaining the original morphology and colour. This case report shows management of complex coronal tooth fracture by tooth fragment reattachment using metal post

Comparison of the Airtraq video laryngoscope versus Macintosh laryngoscope for tracheal intubation in the pediatric patients: A prospective randomized controlled trial

    Get PDF
Securing a patent airway in patients undergoing general anesthesia is routinely done using gold standard methods of direct laryngoscopy with a Macintosh or Miller laryngoscope blade in children. However, this technique has several limitations. Video laryngoscopes provide the user with a better view of the larynx. We undertook this prospective, randomized, controlled trial to determine the intubation time of Airtraq compared with Macintosh laryngoscope in pediatric patients, number of intubation attempts, quality of visualization, optimization maneuvers, easiness of intubation, and cardiovascular changes during intubation. A total of 80 pediatric patients of either sex, between ages three to twelve years, belonging to American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) status I and II, who were divided equally into two groups using the sealed envelope technique. Patients were randomly assigned to be intubated with either Airtraq (Group A) or Macintosh laryngoscope (Group M).  The difference between the time required for intubation within the two groups was significant (p < 0.05), optimization maneuvers were more required for Group M than Group A (p < 0.01). Quality of visualization was better in Group A compared with patients in Group M (p < 0.05)

Soft teeth and their role in the development of periodontal disease

    Get PDF
This article provides a broad and detailed description of the soft teeth and their role in the development of periodontal disease, as well as the prophylactic aspects that should be taken by physicians in the treatment of this disease. When orthopedic dentists grind teeth, especially when the adjacent sides are separated, the interdental sutures are cut, the tissue bleeds, and the wound is injured. If the patient is not instructed to follow the oral cavity in the orthodontic treatment of defects in the dentition, the retention of food debris in the orthodontic appliances and in uneven rows of teeth can lead to the appearance of dentures

OBJECTIVE: Over the last 50 years many authors have used cervical spine fusion as a treatment for degenerative spondylotic conditions, and it has become the standard of care for numerous pathologic conditions of the spine. However, since over the past two decades spinal fusion has been performed on younger patients and the rates of cervical spine surgery have increased. Here we have studied the incidence of the adjacent segment disease and the radiological changes of cervical cord at the level of previous operation and at the adjacent segment. METHODS: Non randomised, open level study done at territory care centre for a period of three years a total 51 operated cervical spine patients were studied. MRI of cervical spine was done in symptomatic patients. All the patients were followed up clinically and radiologically. RESULTS:  Fifty one patients were followed up for minimum of 2 years (average 72.82 months) after cervical spine instrumentation. 23 patients had single or multiple co- morbidities. 29 (56.86%) patients developed adjacent segment degeneration following the primary surgery. Rate of re- surgery for the symptomatic ASD was 9.8% , Development of radiological or clinical ASD 54.9%
