Assessment of diabetes mellitus related knowledge and its association with glycemic control level among adult diabetic patients attending ministry of health primary health care centers in Makkah al Mukarramah, Saudi Arabia
Backgroundː Diabetes mellitus (DM) has a high prevalence rate in Saudi Arabia. Patients must have sufficient knowledge about DM to improve their self-management skills and prevent complications. This research was conducted to estimate the knowledge level among diabetic patients attending primary care centers about DM and its impact on their health. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of type II diabetic patients in Makkah city. Self-administered validated Arabic questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic data, knowledge about the disease, and the level of control. Results The study included 293 patients, 50.2% were females and 85.3% were Saudis. Mean age was 50 years (ranged 31 -77). Blood glucose was uncontrolled in 90.4% of patients. The overall knowledge regarding DM score mean 8.3±2.5 SD (ranged 3 -16) out of 20 and a median (Interquartile range) of 8 (7-10). Higher educated patients (p=0.043) and those who practiced physical activities (p=0.007) were more knowledgeable than their counterparts. None of the diabetes-related variables was significantly related with participants` information. Score of knowledge was not significantly related with level of glycemic control.
General health practitioner skills and procedures
Nursing skills and procedures constitute the foundation of competent and compassionate patient care, serving as essential tools in the arsenal of nursing practice. Throughout this exploration, we have delved into the multifaceted realm of nursing skills and procedures, examining their significance, acquisition, application, and impact within the broader context of contemporary healthcare delivery. From basic tasks such as vital signs monitoring to complex interventions like wound care and medication administration, nursing skills and procedures play a pivotal role in promoting patient comfort, safety, and well-being across diverse clinical settings. Mastery of these skills not only enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of nursing care but also fosters trust, confidence, and satisfaction among patients and their families. the acquisition and refinement of nursing skills and procedures are lifelong endeavors, requiring ongoing education, training, and professional development. As the healthcare landscape evolves, nurses must adapt to emerging technologies, evidence-based practices, and changing patient care needs, continuously updating their skillset to meet the demands of contemporary practice. the integration of technology, simulation, and interdisciplinary collaboration has reshaped the landscape of nursing education, offering innovative avenues for teaching, learning, and skill development
Management of acute spinal cord injuries: Emergency view
Background: Acute spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are devastating events often leading to irreversible neurological damage and significant long-term disabilities. SCIs affect young, otherwise healthy individuals, contributing to a considerable economic and quality-adjusted life years (QALY) burden. Aim: This review aims to provide an overview of current acute management strategies for SCI and to explore emerging therapeutic approaches that may mitigate injury progression and improve outcomes. Methods: The study reviewed existing literature on SCI management, including established protocols and experimental therapies. A comprehensive analysis of surgical and medical treatments, such as early decompression, hemodynamic management, and novel interventions targeting ischemia, inflammation, and cytotoxicity, was conducted. Results: Early surgical decompression, within 24 hours of injury, has been shown to enhance neurological recovery, reduce hospital stays, and lower complication rates. Hemodynamic management, aiming to maintain a mean arterial pressure of 85–90 mmHg, was crucial in improving functional outcomes. Experimental treatments such as cerebrospinal fluid diversion, spinal cooling, and minocycline demonstrated promising results, though further clinical trials are necessary to establish efficacy. Conclusion: While significant advances have been made in the surgical management of SCI, challenges remain in optimizing medical treatments.
Developing interdisciplinary protocols to enhance communication between pharmacists, nurses, and laboratory technicians
Background: Multifaceted communication occurs throughout the healthcare system, thereby incorporating the interaction between pharmacists, nurses and laboratory technicians and the patients they serve. Unfortunately, analyzing communication between these disciplines indicates that such gaps create errors and potential threats to patients’ safety. Communication protocols between these disciplines have been suggested in countering such issue. Aim: This research will seek to look at the standards of communication protocols between different healthcare disciplines and the best ways that the standards can be adopted. Methods: This paper discusses literature, case, and field studies of effective communication that have been applied and adapted in healthcare facilities, with emphasis on technological innovation, training, and protocol formulation and implementation. Results: The results include that the planned communication, in form of structured communication meetings and use of Electronic health records facts the team and enhances patient safety. It also reveals that the training delivered in technical and soft skills help in the improvement of the communication flow. Conclusion: The framework of cross-disciplinary working is crucial for improving communication and consequently for reducing medical risk.
Determinants of tuberculosis treatment outcomes in Asia and Africa
Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease that is both infectious and deadly. Although it can be prevented and treated, the increasing number of TB patients is a nation-wide and global challenge, and thus it requires efforts to control the disease appropriately leading to good treatment outcomes. Identifying the determinants of treatment outcomes is necessary to improve control strategies and programs for TB. Scientific evidence on this issue is still limited. This systematic review aims to describe the potential determinants of TB treatment outcomes regarding the patient’s internal and external factors. The review was carried out using the procedures specified in the PRISMA guidelines. Five databases were used to identify studies related to the determinants of treatment outcomes obtained. There were 829 articles meeting the screening criteria, 23 meeting the criteria for full article review, and 21 for analysis. Most scientific evidence reports the age, sex, HIV status, and location of TB as determinants of treatment outcomes. Sorting and selecting data consistently are necessary in reporting the results of TB treatment which then becomes the foundation for formulating appropriate, targeted, effective, and most needed policies or interventions in improving treatment outcomes and reducing incidence of TB
