    Get PDF
East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) is still endemic for DHF, as in Kupang city. This study aim was to analyze the relationship between Aedes sp praimago density and the DHF incidence in Kupang City. This observational analytic study with a case control design was conducted in 25 urban villages in Kupang City using Cluster sampling. The independent variables were the density of praimago such as House Positivity (HP), Number of Larvae in House (LH), Number of Pupa in House (PH), and Total Eggs (TE), and the dependent variable was the DHF incidence. Data were obtained by entomological surveys to see the density of eggs, larvae and pupae of Aedes sp per house, and then analyzed by independent t test, and Pearson correlation. House positivity (HP) was found to be significantly associated with the DHF incidence (p 0.001; OR 3.519). Larvae in House (LH) and total eggs were also correlated with the DHF incidence, but pupae in house (PH) was not correlated. The conclusion drawn is that the density of Aedes sp mosquito larvae such as HP, LH and TE in a house can be used to estimate the risk of dengue incidence from family members living in the house

    Get PDF
Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7 genes was involved in the host immune response against viral infections including SARS-COV-2. This study aimed to investigate the association between the TLR7 (rs179008) polymorphisms with the prognosis and susceptibility to COVID-19 pneumonia accompanying SARSCOV-2 infection. This case-control study included 120 individuals: 80 COVID-19 patients (severe and mild) and 40 controls. Polymorphisms (TLR7 rs179008) were genotyped by Sanger sequencing using ABI3730XL, automated DNA sequencer, by Macrogen Corporation – Korea after sent PCR products. This study also investigated predictors of mortality in COVID-19 severity through logistic regression. The mutant‘T/T' genotypes and the ‘T' alleles of TLR7 (rs179008) polymorphisms were significantly associated with increased risk of COVID-19 severity. Our study illustrated that the males harbouring the TT genotype of TLR7 rs 170008 polymorphism could be more susceptible to COVID-19 pneumonia than females having the same genotype

Correlation between oxidative stress and clopidogrel drug in Iraqi patients with coronary artery disease

    Get PDF
Background: Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is one of the largest causes of mortality worldwide. Clopidogrel, antiplatelet drug, has been widely used for management of CAD. The current study aimed to investigate the effect of clopidogrel on the oxidative stress in CAD patients. Methods: One hundred CAD patients, who were followed-up for 5 days after receiving clopidogrel, and 50 healthy volunteers were included in this study. Parameters include catalase (CAT), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant capacity (TOC), total protein, albumin, and globulins were determined before and after treatment with clopidogrel. Results: CAT, TAC, and Tp were significantly decreased (P<0.0001) in CAD patients compared to healthy control and the levels of these parameters were returned to increase after receiving clopidogrel. However, TOC level was markedly increased (P<0.0001) in CAD patients and returned to decrease after treating with clopidogrel. Receiver operating characteristic curve showed that CAT gave a higher sensitivity (68-73%) and specificity (72%) as an indicator for monitoring of CAD progression. Conclusion: CAT activity and TAC were significantly increased as a response of receiving clopidogrel which is helpful to reduce the risk of CAD through scavenging of oxidants formation. These results also present CAT as a predictor variable of clopidogrel action

    Get PDF
Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis (HPS) is a condition that occurs in infants with an abnormally thickened pyloric stomach, presented with a symptom of projectile vomiting. The cause of HPS is still unclear. However, it may occur due to multiple factors, including racial, environmental, and genetic factors, with the incidence of one to two out of 1000 live births. We reported a Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis (HPS) case in a 21-day-old baby girl (baby I) with projectile vomiting and yellowish diarrhea about six days before admission, which was recorded to be more than five times a day. The patient was hospitalized at Anwar Medika Hospital for five days before being referred to dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya, and a pyloromyotomy were performed. Physical examination and radiological investigations (plain radiographs, Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI), and ultrasonography (USG)) supported the diagnosis of HPS. Ramstedt pyloromyotomy procedure had been conducted with a diagnosis of post-pyloromyotomy hypertrophic pyloric stenosis

Objectives: Extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBLs), which are produced by multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa, are a critical problem that demands efficient infection management strategies to break their spread. The prevalence of clinical isolates varies widely around the world and changes fast over time. The objectives of this research are to determine the spread of ESBLs (blaTEM, blaCTX M, and blaSHV) genes among the isolates of P. aeruginosa.  and to find the antibiotic susceptibility among these isolates which reflect the rate and severity of pathogenicity of these bacteria in Iraq. Methods: one hundred and fifty clinical specimens were collected from wound, burn and diabetic foot swabs of patients hospitalized in Babylon and Baghdad hospitals. P. aeruginosa isolates were identified based on their morphological features (culturally and microscopically), biochemical tests, Vitek 2 compact, PCR-sequencing for the P. aeruginosa-specific gene and the antibiotic susceptibility tests were also performed. Results: Forty-six isolates of P. aeruginosa were isolated and identified, these isolates were resistant to tobramycin, piperacillin, cefepime, imipenem, ofloxacin, aztreonam and netilmicin, (100%). The lowest resistance of P. aeruginosa isolates was to ciprofloxacin (43 %). PCR experiments showed that P. aeruginosa have blaTEM 27/46 (58.69%), blaSHV 29/46 (63%), and blaCTX-M 31/46 (67.39%).&nbsp
