Roots and Wings: Understanding What Derails Learners' Performance in Life Sciences in Rural Schools in South Africa
This study aims to explore the factors that affect learner performance of grade 10 life sciences learners in selected schools in Chris Hani East District of South Africa. The study was framed within the roots and wings concept as a compelling metaphor for understanding the educational journey in life sciences education The study was based on the theoretical framework of social constructivism. The data was collected using interpretivist qualitative case study methods. The focus of this study was on both life sciences teachers and learners. Four schools in the Chris Hani East district were selected using purposeful sampling. Four life sciences teachers were purposefully chosen from the sample schools (schools A, B, C, and D), and twelve learners were chosen randomly from the selected schools. The interview schedule served as the primary tool for data collection. Thematic analysis was employed to analyse the data and identify themes. The study found that multiple interrelated factors, including resource limitations, language barriers, socioeconomic challenges, and ineffective teaching methods influence the performance of Grade 10 life sciences learners. The study suggests enhancing life sciences education through continuous professional development programs, effective teaching strategies, curriculum delivery, and adoption and implementation of innovative technology in life sciences classroom
Reconceptualising Mathematical Problem Solving and Higher-Order Thinking: A Comparative Analysis of Lesson Study-Based Instruction and Conventional Teaching
This study aimed to examine the effect of Lesson Study-based instruction on students’ Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and Mathematical Problem-Solving abilities regarding similarity. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design was employed. Two intact Grade VIII classes at SMP Negeri 1 Maja, Majalengka Regency, were purposively selected as the experimental group (receiving Lesson Study-based instruction) and the control group (receiving conventional instruction). Data were collected using a validated essay test of six items—three measuring Mathematical Problem-Solving skills based on Polya’s framework and three measuring HOTS aligned with the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy indicators. The test showed high validity and reliability after piloting. Data analysis included normality tests (Shapiro-Wilk), homogeneity of variance tests (Levene’s test), independent samples t-tests to compare post-test and normalized gain (N-gain) scores, and effect size interpretation based on Hake’s classification. The results revealed a significant improvement in both post-test and N-gain scores in the experimental group compared to the control group, indicating that Lesson Study-based instruction effectively enhances students’ advanced cognitive skills in mathematics. Pengaruh pemberian ampas kelapa fermentasi dalam ransum terhadap persentase organ dalam dan lemak abdomen ayam broiler
This study aims to determine the effect of adding fermented coconut dregs to rations on the percentages of internal organs and abdominal fat in broiler chickens. The research was conducted in the experimental cage of the Animal Husbandry Study Program at Khairun University, Fitu Village, South Ternate City. This study utilized 80 broilers in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) comprising four treatments and four replications, with each replication consisting of 5 broilers. The treatments were: R0 (100% commercial feed), R1 (10% fermented coconut pulp + 90% commercial feed), R2 (20% fermented coconut pulp + 80% commercial feed), and R3 (30% fermented coconut pulp + 70% commercial feed). The data obtained were analyzed using one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and further tests with the Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The study's results showed that providing fermented coconut dregs in the ration had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on the percentage of internal organs. However, they had a significant effect (P < 0.05) on the percentage of abdominal fat in broilers. It can be concluded that providing fermented coconut dregs up to 20% in the ration does not affect the weight of internal organs, namely the liver, heart, gizzard, and abdominal fat.
Botanical composition and carrying capacity of forage along the roadsides in the highlands of Bandung Regency
Forage is the primary feed source for ruminant livestock, especially dairy cattle, as it provides essential nutrients for productivity. However, limited forage availability due to land conversion and seasonal changes has encouraged farmers to utilize field grasses, including roadside vegetation, as an alternative feed source. This study aimed to determine the botanical composition and carrying capacity of forage along the roadsides in the highlands of Bandung Regency. The sampling method used was purposive sampling, which involved deliberately selecting research locations through direct field surveys for data and sample collection. Sampling was conducted in five districts in the highlands of Bandung Regency—Ciwidey, Rancabali, Pangalengan, Cimaung, and Arjasari—with ten sampling plots in each district, resulting in a total of 50 plots. Sampling used a quadrat measuring 1 m × 1 m, which was placed randomly. Data were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The results showed that there were 72 botanical species, with Galinsoga parviflora being the most dominant species based on frequency of occurrence. At the same time, Pennisetum clandestinum was the most dominant species based on forage production. Based on biomass proportion, grasses dominated at 77.32%, legumes at 1.02%, and weeds at 21.66%. The carrying capacity of the roadsides in the highlands of Bandung Regency was 0.92 LU/ha/year, with forage production of 4.93 tons DM/ha/year, indicating that the roadside areas can support approximately one mature dairy cow, or two heifers, or four calves. The roadside in Rancabali District had the highest forage production, reaching 7.70 tons DM/ha/year with a carrying capacity of 1.40 LU/ha/year
Analisis preferensi konsumen terhadap daging ayam kampung dan ayam broiler di pasar tradisional Kota Kupang
This study aims to analyze consumer preferences for free-range and broiler chicken in traditional markets in Kupang City. Data were collected from 50 respondents selected through accidental sampling at three purposively chosen traditional markets—Oebobo, Oeba, and Inpres Naikoten—between 5 and 25 October 2025. Primary data were obtained through interviews and questionnaires, while secondary data were sourced from institutional reports and relevant literature. Descriptive statistics were used to identify consumer characteristics and attribute evaluations, followed by an independent samples t-test or Mann–Whitney U test to assess differences in preferences between the two types of chicken. The results show that consumers exhibit a stronger preference for free-range chicken due to its richer flavor profile, firmer texture, and greater perceived health value, positioning it as a premium-quality product. In contrast, broiler chicken is primarily chosen for its affordability, high market availability, and practicality in food preparation, making it the most feasible option for daily household consumption. The Mann–Whitney U test returned a significance value of < 0.05 for all assessed attributes, confirming statistically significant differences in consumer preferences between the two chicken types. Overall, these findings indicate distinct market segmentation, where free-range chicken appeals to consumers who prioritize sensory quality and health attributes, while broiler chicken dominates routine demand driven by economic and efficiency considerations. The results are expected to serve as a strategic reference for market actors and policymakers in developing poultry marketing strategies and food policy intervention
PENERAPAN ALGORITMA NAÏVE BAYES MENGGUNAKAN PYTHON UNTUK MENDETEKSI SMS SPAM DAN PROMO
Deteksi pesan spam pada layanan SMS merupakan hal penting untuk mencegah mulai dari hal kecil seperti gangguan waktu hingga sesuatu yang berbahaya seperti phishing, malware, atau penipuan. Penelitian ini menggunakan algoritma Naïve Bayes yang di implementasikan dengan menggunakan bahasa pemrograman Python sebagai metode klasifikasi untuk memprediksi apakah sebuah pesan SMS tergolong normal, spam, atau promo. Dataset yang digunakan diperoleh dari platform Kaggle dan akan dibagi menjadi dua, yaitu 80% data untuk proses pelatihan (training) dan 20% data untuk pengujian (testing). Nantinya, hasil dari pengujian data berupa Confusion Matrix, accuracy, precision, recall, dan f1-score dapat digunakan untuk mengestimasi sebarapa efektif model untuk mendeteksi SMS normal, spam, ataupun promo. Berdasarkan hasil pengujian, algoritma Naïve Bayes menunjukkan performa yang baik dengan tingkat akurasi mencapai 93% dalam menklasifikasikan SMS normal, spam, dan promo. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa metode Naïve Bayes efektif digunakan dalam mendeteksi pesan spam dan promo pada layanan SMS
The impact of using snowbrawl gimkit learning media on interest and learning outcomes in mathematics
This study aims to investigate the impact of Snowbrawl Gimkit as an interactive learning media on students’ interest and academic performance in mathematics. The research responds to the widespread issue of low engagement and achievement in mathematics, especially in Indonesia, where students’ PISA scores remain below average. This study used a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design of the One Group Pre-test Post-test Design type. The research subjects were 30 eighth-grade students randomly selected from SMP Negeri 1 Socah. The research instruments consisted of a learning interest questionnaire and a mathematics achievement test that had been tested for validity and reliability. Data analysis techniques included the Shapiro-Wilk test to assess normality, the Levene test for homogeneity, and the paired t-test for hypothesis evaluation. The results of the study indicate a significant increase in students' interest and learning outcomes in mathematics after the implementation of the Snowbrawl Gimkit media. Statistical analysis yielded a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating a significant effect. The average interest in learning increased from 62.2 to 78.47, while the average learning outcomes rose from 38.00 to 56.67. The results of this study indicate that the use of game-based learning media such as Snowbrawl Gimkit is effective in increasing student motivation and learning achievement. This media is able to address the challenge of low student interest in mathematics by making lessons fun and interactive. Therefore, this study suggests that educators integrate gamification platforms into their teaching as a useful innovation
From Tropical Forests to Urban Landscapes: Conservation of Herpetofauna in the Anthropocene
The Anthropocene is defined by human-induced biodiversity loss on a global scale. Three of the primary threats to biodiversity persistence are habitat loss/fragmentation, invasive species, and climate change. Tropical regions host more biodiversity than anywhere else, including the at-risk groups of reptiles and amphibians (herpetofauna), making conservation efforts in the tropics particularly important. The impacts of habitat loss/fragmentation vary by species and understanding how different landscape features promote species richness and abundance can provide valuable information for conservation planning. Chapter 2 investigates the herpetofauna community in a fragmented tropical forest landscape embedded in a cattle pasture matrix and finds that while patches and corridors support a similar community to forest preserves, responses to landscape features vary between generalist and specialist species. In my third chapter, I then analyze the herpetofauna community in Miami-Dade County, another fragmented, but urbanized, area that is also the global hotspot for non-native herpetofauna. In this chapter, I find that over 90% of all herpetofauna in urban Miami-Dade County are non-native, and that non-native species dominate community patterns even within native habitat patches. Chapter 4 then focuses on the conservation risk for one native South Florida species, the Florida reef gecko, finding that this species is the U.S. herpetofauna most at risk from sea level rise and meets criteria for state listing. Finally, Chapter 5 investigates the responses of the Florida reef gecko, a coastal species prone to storm surge and hurricane risk, to various impacts that would be expected from an extreme climate event (saltwater exposure, flooding, and high wind speeds). All my chapters focus on the overarching theme of herpetofauna conservation in human-modified landscapes. My hope is that this dissertation will prove informative for management and conservation planning in the face of the anthropogenic pressures of habitat fragmentation, invasive species, and climate change
Communicative Language Teaching For Education 5.0: A New Horizon For English Language Instruction: Pengajaran Bahasa Komunikatif Untuk Pendidikan 5.0: Cakrawala Baru untuk Pengajaran Bahasa Inggris
The paper examines how Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) can adapt its features to fulfill the demands of Education 5.0 in terms of the integration of technology, collaboration, and real-life skills in English language teaching. A narrative literature review on relevant research related to CLT was carried out, along with an analysis with regard to the agreement of principles with Education 5.0. While interaction and learner's autonomy remain some of the key concerns of CLT, its modifications in forms of infusion of the digital tool along with culturally responsive strategies have become necessary. These are identified at the heart of most barriers to full integration: teacher training, access to technology, and curriculum development. The framework, on the other hand, proposes ongoing professional development, improvement in access to the digital resources, and a focus on a learner-centered environment. The paper underlines the potential of CLT in shaping the future of teaching English and further calls for more empirical studies assessing its effectiveness as a theory in contemporary educational contexts
Student Engagement in Project Based Learning Activities
This study aims to analyze student engagement through a project-based learning model in a seventh grade EFL classroom. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study method to gain an in-depth understanding of how students engage in learning activities when using the PjBL model, where data was collected through observation, open ended questions interviews, and documentation. The research participants consisted of 34 seventh grade students in a junior high school. The results showed that the use of project-based learning model in EFL classroom can provide significant learning engagement for students in English learning process. The PjBL model encourages students to play an active role in learning by involving them in meaningful and contextualized tasks. Project-based learning has been shown to enhance students' enthusiasm, boost their self-confidence, foster creativity, and strengthen both independent and collaborative learning abilities. This study recommends the application of project-based learning in EFL contexts, especially in an effort to improve students’ ability to speak and write in English
