    The Use of Baamboozle to Improve Vocabulary Mastery of High School Students

    This study investigates the use of Baamboozle as a digital learning tool to enhance vocabulary mastery among 10th-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Mranggen. The research employs a pre-experimental design involving a pre-test and post-test to assess students’ vocabulary mastery before and after the intervention. The findings reveal that students initially demonstrated low vocabulary mastery, with many categorized as “poor” or “very poor.” Following a two-week intervention utilizing Baamboozle, results indicate a significant improvement in students’ vocabulary scores, with a notable increase in the number of students achieving “good” and “excellent” classifications. Statistical analysis confirms a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores, highlighting the positive impact of interactive and gamified learning on vocabulary acquisition. The study underscores the importance of engaging teaching methods to foster student motivation and enhance learning outcomes in language education

    Trophic Contributions of Ectoparasites to Coral Reef Food Webs

    &nbsp;Trophic structure is a key component of ecosystem ecology. Not only is the acquisition of nutrition a necessity of every living organism, but consumptive interactions in many ways structure the species dynamics for nearly every ecosystem in existence. Food webs are a primary tool in studying trophic structure, allowing researchers to analyze various aspects of food web topology, bioenergetics, and species interaction strength. However, most food webs are uneven in their resolution, with small and cryptic species generally constituting relatively insignificant portions of food web models. This includes parasites, which represent the most common consumer strategy. Gnathiid isopods are among the most common ectoparasites of fishes and can be found from shallow inshore waters to the deep abyss. Most active during nocturnal and crepuscular times, they emerge from the benthos to locate a host and remove a blood meal. My interdisciplinary dissertation focuses on determining the contribution of gnathiid isopods, a cryptic ectoparasitic invertebrate, to biomass transfer and trophic connectivity on Caribbean coral reefs. First, I investigated the host and spatial range of gnathiids on shallow Caribbean reefs. The first part of this study focused on whether gnathiids would feed on soft-bodied invertebrates in an isolated environment. The second part of this study determined the degree to which gnathiids will above the substrate into the water column to feed on a fish host. Next, I aimed to determine how the gnathiid consumption of non-cleaner fishes compared to that of cleaner fishes. Finally, I conducted a multi-site study which allowed me to estimate the biomass transferred by both predators and parasites from Stegastes damselfishes. Overall, the results of this dissertation have expanded our knowledge of how gnathiids impact trophic structure and contribute to energy flow on Caribbean coral reefs. These results have also set a foundation for future research studies that build on the influence of parasites in food webs and how they impact the species the feed on and are consumed by.</p

    Implementasi Alat Hitung Sempoa sebagai Media Pembelajaran Matematika dalam Meningkatkan Kemampuan Numerasi Siswa Sekolah Dasar

    This study aims to determine the difference before and after applying abacus counting tool as a mathematics learning media in improving numeracy skills of elementary school students. The method used is quantitative with Pre-Experimental research type with The One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. This research will be conducted at SD Negeri Ciketak with the research subjects of class IV students totalling 18 students, using simple random sampling technique. The research instruments used were numeracy test sheets and non-test sheets (questionnaires) as student responses while the data analysis techniques used were descriptive and inferential statistics. Data analysis used prerequisite test, t-test of two dependent samples/paired samples t-test, wilcoxon test, N-Gain analysis and questionnaire data processing. The results showed that there was an average difference in students' numeracy skills by using abacus counting tools as a mathematics learning media. The N-Gain value with a mean of 0.6591 where the value is included in the medium category, meaning that there is a significant increase between the average numeracy skills of students using abacus calculator as a mathematics learning media. In addition, the questionnaire results showed positive responses from students. Thus, the implementation of abacus calculator as a mathematics learning media is effective in improving the numeracy skills of primary school student

    Pengembangan Media Pembelajaran Mathematics Monopoly (Mathpoly) untuk Meningkatkan Kemampuan Pemahaman Matematis Siswa

    Penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk mengkaji aspek kelayakan, kepraktisan, serta keefektifan dari pengembangan media Mathpoly dalam upaya meningkatkan pemahaman matematis siswa. Metode yang digunakan adalah Research and Development (R&amp;D) dengan model ADDIE serta menerapkan desain quasi eksperimental dengan model nonequivalent pretest-posttest control group design. Pastisipan penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 2 Kuningan tahun ajaran 2024/2025 yang terdiri dari kelas VII-J sebagai kelas kontrol dan kelas VII-K sebagai kelas eksperimen. Hasil penelitian mengindikasikan bahwa Mathpoly sangat layak digunakan dengan persentase keseluruhan penilaian oleh ahli media dan ahli materi sebesar 87,4%. Mathpoly yang telah dikembangkan juga memperoleh kriteria “Sangat Praktis” dengan persentase sebesar 92%. Selain itu, Mathpoly juga efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman matematis. Hal tersebut dapat terlihat dari siswa yang menggunakan media pembelajaran Mathpoly memperoleh rata-rata nilai dan peningkatan kemampuan pemahaman matematis yang lebih baik dibandingkan dengan siswa yang tidak menggunakannya. Hal tersebut ditunjukkan dengan nilai Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) sebesar  dan nilai signifikansi N-Gain sebesar 0.000 , serta didukung oleh respon positif siswa yang menggunakan Mathpoly sebesar 88,6%

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis efektivitas penerapan Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) dalam meningkatkan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa ditinjau dari motivasi belajar. Latar belakang penelitian adalah rendahnya keterampilan pemecahan masalah siswa serta dominasi pembelajaran konvensional yang cenderung membuat siswa pasif. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain eksperimen semu tipe Nonequivalent Control Group. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas VIII SMPN 1 Luragung yang dibagi ke dalam kelas eksperimen (RME) dan kelas kontrol (konvensional). Instrumen penelitian berupa tes uraian kemampuan pemecahan masalah dan angket motivasi belajar. Analisis data dilakukan dengan menggunakan ANOVA dua jalur. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan signifikan antara model pembelajaran RME dan pembelajaran konvensional, di mana RME terbukti lebih efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa. Selain itu, kemampuan pemecahan masalah siswa berbeda berdasarkan tingkat motivasi belajar (tinggi, sedang, rendah). Analisis juga menemukan adanya interaksi antara model pembelajaran dan motivasi belajar, yang menunjukkan bahwa siswa dengan motivasi tinggi memperoleh hasil lebih optimal melalui RME. Dengan demikian, RME dapat menjadi strategi alternatif yang menjanjikan dalam upaya meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran matematika

    Ambivalent Protest: Ghosting in American Cinematic and Literary Fictions

    Ambivalent Protest: Ghosting in American Cinematic and Literary Fictions demonstrates how contemporary American cultural texts deploy the ghost, a figure often associated with the horror genre, to trouble both the &ldquo;ghosting&rdquo; of marginalized stories and the problematic optimism of progress narratives. The works examined are part of what I call &ldquo;ambivalent protest.&rdquo; These texts represent protests that do not promote a political message of progress from struggle. Reframing major scholarship in Queer and Indigenous Studies, consecutive chapters on Black and Native cultural production show how ambivalent protest, like the ghost, is spectral: an imagined or speculative confrontation with power, neither embodied in the flesh, nor dis-embodied or invisible. Ambivalent protest is also inherently queer, as it has an indefinite form and temporality, which displaces more normative forms of protest that may only be accessible to the white cis-hetero settler. I conclude that these works are cinematic and literary fictions that&mdash;while critiquing structural problems like settler colonialism and racism&mdash;are ultimately skeptical of or ambivalent about the possibilities of reparation. Instead, these texts evoke new social realities where the ghosted haunt the beneficiaries of power, a nonviolent act that begets justice and retribution.</p

    Retargeting CD8+ Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes to Kill HIV/SIV-Infected Cells using Peptide-Major Histocompatibility Complex Class I-Monoclonal Antibody Fusion Proteins

    The development of a sterilizing cure for HIV remains a major global health priority. HIV/AIDS continues to threaten human health worldwide, with 1.5 million new infections diagnosed and nearly 700,000 AIDS-related deaths reported each year. While antiretroviral therapy (ART) is highly effective in preventing disease progression, it is not a cure and requires taking lifelong daily medication. Furthermore, ART simply inhibits viral replication, leaving the reservoir of HIV-infected cells with integrated proviral genomes intact; a sterilizing cure will require elimination of this infected cell reservoir. CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) possess tremendous potential to kill HIV-infected cells. CTLs are the predominant force suppressing viremia from peak to setpoint levels during acute infection and allowing rare elite controllers (ECs) to spontaneously control chronic-phase viremia in the absence of ART. However, in most individuals, CTL efficacy will markedly decline during HIV infection due to viral escape and CTL exhaustion. In contrast, CTLs specific for the chronic and ubiquitous herpesvirus cytomegalovirus (CMV) remain highly functional and do not become exhausted, even after decades of antigen exposure. To restore CTL efficacy in HIV infection and facilitate depletion of the infected cell reservoir, we propose retargeting CMV-specific CTLs using peptide-major histocompatibility complex I-monoclonal antibody (pMHCI-mAb) fusion proteins. In this dissertation, we examine the feasibility of this novel HIV cure strategy using the SIVmac239 model of HIV infection in Indian rhesus macaques (RMs).&nbsp;</p

    Deep Reinforcement Learning for Noisy Binary Search

    Noisy binary search (NBS) aims to find a closest element to a target value within a sorted array through erroneous queries. In an ideal NBS environment where both the error rate and the cost to each query are fixed, the maximum likelihood estimation procedure has been proven to be the optimal decision strategy. However, in some nonideal NBS problems, both the error rates and the costs are dependent on the queries, and in some cases, finding the optimal decision strategy can be intractable. In this dissertation, we propose to use deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to approximate the optimal decision strategy in NBS problem, in which an intelligent agent is used to interact with the NBS environment. Through training, the agent learns how to take action at each step, either to generate a query or to stop the search and predict the target value. We study different NBS environments, both ideal or non-ideal, with a single target or multiple targets, and propose DRL-based solutions and optimization techniques for each environment. For our proposed algorithms, we study their performance and robustness and the difference between their learned polices and the baseline algorithms.</p

    PERANAN K3 PADA PEKERJAAN PEMELIHARAAN MESIN DIESEL RIG CARRIER C15 DENGAN MENGGUNAKAN METODE HIRARC: SEBUAH STUDI KASUS

    Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is a crucial aspect of every work activity, especially in the maintenance of heavy machinery such as the Diesel Rig Carrier CAT-15. This study aims to identify potential hazards, assess risk levels, and determine appropriate control measures using the HIRARC (Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Risk Control) method in the maintenance activities of the Diesel Rig CAT-15 at PT. Tiga Musim Mas Jaya.The research method involved direct observation and analysis of nine main maintenance activities, namely checking the radiator, engine oil, transmission oil, hydraulic tank, spark arrestor, battery voltage, V-belt, Eagle box, and flywheel. The hazard identification results found a total of 29 potential hazards with varying risk levels: 37.93% categorized as low risk, 44.83% as medium risk, and 17.24% as high risk. Following the implementation of risk controls based on the hierarchy of controls (elimination, substitution, engineering design, administrative measures, and the use of Personal Protective Equipment/PPE), all potential risks were successfully reduced to a low level.The conclusion of this study indicates that the systematic application of the HIRARC method can enhance the effectiveness of risk control and contribute to creating a safe and healthy work environment for employees. This approach is expected to be continuously implemented as part of the company’s OHS management system

    Pendekatan saintifik (scientific approach) dalam kurikulum 2013 diyakini sebagai salah satu bagian perkembangan dan pengembangan sikap, keterampilan, dan pengetahuan peserta didik dalam pendekatan atau proses kerja yang memenuhi kriteria ilmiah. Banyaknya buku teks Biologi yang beredar dikalangan masyarakat mengharuskan untuk lebih teliti dalam memilihnya. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui kualitas isi buku teks Biologi SMA kurikulum 2013 kelas XI konsep sistem pencernaan dari tiga penerbit yang berbeda yang akan ditinjau dari tingkat akomodasi pendekatan saintifik (scientific approach) berdasarkan kurikulum 2013. Analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah analisis deskriptif dengan maksud hasil analisis kualitas buku ini dibahas dalam bentuk pemaparan dan membuat kesimpulan untuk medeskripsikan kualitas buku teks Biologi kurikulum 2013 SMA kelas XI. Berdasarkan hasil analisis dan pembahasan yang dilakukan, tingkat ketepatan konsep pada buku teks Biologi kurikulum 2013 SMA kelas XI terbitan “C” dan “A” memiliki konsep yang Memadai paling tinggi dibandingkan dengan buku terbitan “B”. Sedangkan jika ditinjau dari tingkat akomodasi pendekatan saintifik dengan lima aspek yang sudah ditetapkan, buku teks biologi kurikulum 2013 terbitan “C” adalah buku yang memiliki tingkat akomodasi pendekatan saintifik tertinggi, dan buku teks biologi kurikulum 2013 SMA kelas XI terbitan “B” yang memiliki tingkat akomodasi pendekatan saintifik paling rendah. Kesimpulan dari analisis ini adalah buku teks biologi kurikulum 2013 SMA kelas XI terbitan “C” memiliki penilaian yang baik dalam hal tingkat ketepatan konsep juga dalam hal tingkat akomodasi pendekatan saintifik
