    Get PDF
Digital technology is one of the strongest driving forces in the modern economy, requiring the mastery of 21st-century skills. These skills can be developed through mathematics, as its learning process enhances students' strategic thinking. Mathematics should be taught from the elementary level to equip students with logical, analytical, systematic, critical thinking, and communication skills. Mathematical communication is especially important for elementary students to understand, express ideas, model problems, and find solutions. However, current evidence shows that students’ mathematical communication skills remain relatively low, partly due to the limited use of learning models and classroom activities designed to foster such abilities. One potential solution is the use of a problem-solving approach supported by VBA for Excel-based learning media. This combination can improve students’ mathematical understanding and enhance their 21st-century skills, particularly in mathematical communication. The use of VBA-based media provides students with visual and interactive tools to solve and communicate various mathematical problems. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the problem-solving approach and VBA for Excel media in improving elementary students’ mathematical communication skills. A quasi-experimental method was used, applying a Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design in two classes at a public elementary school in Bandung, with sampling through Non-Probability Sampling techniques. The results showed that this approach effectively improved students’ mathematical communication skills. Moreover, the learning media helped optimize the learning process and received positive feedback from students

    Get PDF
This study was driven by the lack of use of instructional media in classroom learning, particularly in early reading programs in elementary schools. The absence of stimulating learning activities in first grade causes children to be uninterested in reading and view reading as a boring task, both of which exacerbate their reading challenges. Our program was to develop educational resources specifically designed to increase student engagement in the classroom. The resulting instructional media consisted of notecards designed with the Canva application, following the Design and Development research methodology outlined by Richey and Klein. This study used the Planning, Production, and Evaluation (PPE) methodology. Three specialists participated in this study to evaluate the feasibility of the educational media project being developed. This investigation used expert validation questionnaires, work notes, and interviews as instruments. Each expert participated in three iterations of revision and two rounds of validation during the development of the instructional media. Recommendations for improving the standard of the media were proposed. Qualitative data were obtained from quantitative expert assessments using the Likert Scale. Based on expert reviews conducted during the final validation, flashcard learning media were very effective in teaching Indonesian reading skills to early childhood students with an average score of 91.7%

Fostering Reading Interest in Elementary Students through Local Wisdom: A Case Study

    Get PDF
This pre-study explores the reading interest of elementary school students and the potential integration of local wisdom into literacy practices. The background of this study stems from preliminary findings that reveal low reading interest among second-grade students in an elementary school. Most students prefer picture books and show limited engagement with traditional texts, especially when lacking visual appeal. Furthermore, observations and teacher interviews indicate that cultural elements such as local traditions and values—particularly from Madura—are rarely included in classroom reading materials. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through questionnaires, classroom observations, and teacher interviews. The results show that 70% of students read only when instructed, and over 80% express interest in books that include illustrations and culturally familiar content. Teachers acknowledge the need for relevant reading materials that combine engaging storytelling with the richness of local culture. They believe such materials can promote reading habits while strengthening students’ cultural identity. This study highlights a significant gap in culturally responsive reading materials for young learners. It suggests the importance of developing culturally integrated picture storybooks to enhance reading interest. Incorporating local wisdom into early literacy development can not only foster students’ engagement in reading but also preserve cultural heritage. The findings provide a basis for future development of reading materials rooted in local traditions and values

Early reading ability is a crucial stage in primary education as it lays the foundation for students’ literacy development at the next levels. However, many first-grade students struggle with letter recognition, distinguishing similarly shaped letters, spelling words correctly, and understanding texts. This study aims to identify early reading difficulties among first-grade students at SDN Keranggan, South Tangerang. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method using observation, interviews, and document analysis as data collection techniques. The findings indicate that several students face obstacles in recognizing letters, spelling words accurately, and comprehending reading materials. These difficulties arise due to a lack of practice at home and low learning motivation. Furthermore, students exhibit challenges in distinguishing visually similar letters, such as "b" and "d" or "p" and "q," which leads to errors in reading accuracy. To address these issues, teachers implement various strategies, including visual media, multisensory approaches, and picture-based reading exercises, which have shown a positive impact on students' reading proficiency. Additionally, parental involvement plays a crucial role in supporting children’s reading development, with activities such as reading together, using interactive learning tools, and fostering a reading-friendly environment. With adequate support from both the school and home environments, early reading difficulties can be minimized, allowing students to develop effectively and comprehend texts proficiently
