Das Catering von morgen : wie können Big Data, IoT oder KI zur Optimierung der Warenwirtschaftsprozesse im (Klein-)Catering beitragen?
As of late, new technologies such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence or big data and their diverse application possibilities are generating enormous interest. They are ever more frequently noted in connection with business process optimisation. And yet, the effective implementation of such technologies – especially in Germany – remains limited and largely dominated by individual industries. Gastronomy in general and the catering industry in particular currently exhibit low digitalisation levels, albeit harbouring enormous potential for digitalisation and automation. The merchandise management process in particular – a key core process – still comprises many manual operations.
In this context, this research aims to examine the potential for digitalisation and automation of merchandise management at a small catering company. To this end, the following main research question is: how can current technologies such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and big data favour the optimisation and automation of the merchandise management processes at a local small catering company?
The resulting sub-questions are: what digital gaps can currently be identified in small catering? What potential and challenges arise from the digitalisation and automation of merchandise management at a small catering company? What discrepancies between requirements and reality can be identified and justified with regard to the digitalisation of merchandise management processes?
To answer the research questions, detailed literature search and an empirical study were conducted. In particular, studies included partially structured observations and guideline-based expert interviews with people from the catering and IT industry.
Studies reveal a significant application potential, especially in the physical goods process which – reinforced by the use of IoT applications – allows the creation of a much-needed database. In this respect, the information interface to the goods themselves proves a pivotal point. By combining physical and information data, one may create a solid database which AI may later use to provide intelligent analyses, forecasts and action recommendations. On the information level itself, it is worth noting the high optimisation and application potential of these technologies in the purchasing process.Masterarbeit Wien, Fachhochschule des BFI Wien 202
Unternehmensdemerger infolge und mittels der digitalen Transformation der Nutzfahrzeugbranche : dargestellt am Beispiel des Spin-Offs der Daimler Truck AG
While technology, culture, governmental regulations and political circumstances become more and more complex and the speed of change increases permanently, it gets even more challenging for companies to stay on track and secure the competiveness of their organization. In 2021, having this in mind, Daimler Truck AG decided to separate from its former mother company Daimler AG and since December 10th 2021 acts as a legally independent company. With this Spin-Off the company took the chance for making own decisions, creating its own culture and establishing new processes and priorities. As a central challenge for this project, the company needs to know the development of digital transformation and the meaning of the internal and external aspects for the company’s business as well as the company-specific strength and weaknesses to deduce the chances and risks for its business.
This thesis identifies the central internal and external drivers for digital transformation in general, for the commercial vehicles industry and especially for Daimler Truck. It evaluates the developments in politics, economy, culture, technology, law and ecology and offers an analysis on the company specific strength, weaknesses, chances and risks based on these aspects. As one central outcome of this thesis, a recommendation for action was formulated, based on the company-specific results of the analysis.
To evaluate the results of the analysis and the recommendation for action interviews with several experts from within the company, other industries and from university took place and have been set in reference with the analytical results. A discussion and evaluation of the action plan for Daimler Truck took place with the experts, to the secure its feasibility and effectiveness.
This thesis closes with the summary of all results and key messages from the analysis as well as the interviews with the experts and gives an outlook on the next steps for the company’s development.Masterarbeit Wien, Fachhochschule des BFI Wien 202
Empathische Führungskräfte als relevanter Faktor für eine gute MitarbeiterInnenbindung
The aim of this paper is to examine the extent to which there is a positive connection between the empathy of the manager from their employee's point of view and employee retention. To answer this question a quantitative survey which is due to resources limited to the Austrian labour market was carried out. In the course of this master's thesis the most important theoretical concepts related to the research question were discussed comprehensively and defined in order to ensure a common understanding of these aspects and on the other hand to work out more clearly which considerations and findings have led to the research question and the resulting hypotheses. In the chapters on the theoretical aspects of the research question relevant scientific literature was discussed with one chapter each being devoted to the topic of empathy, leadership and employee retention. It becomes clear during the chapters on these theoretical foundations, that the body of literature concerning the relationship of empathy and leadership offers numerous scientific studies on the impact of the manager's ability to empathize on their employees. In this context however the effects on the performance of employees and their health were primarily examined. As far as the author is concerned there exists no study that examines the direct effects of the empathy of the manager from their employee's point of view and employee retention. Due to the growing dissatisfaction of employees with their job and the resulting willingness to change jobs, which ultimately leads to increasing employee fluctuation, the question how to retain employees successfully has become an even more relevant one. Promising empirical findings, such as the already confirmed positive effects of empathic leadership as well as suggestions by some researchers, now lead to this thesis. By conducting a quantitative online survey usable data from 125 participants could be collected. The basis for answering the research question itself was a correlation analysis and the calculation of a regression model. Both methods indicate a significant positive connection between the empathy of the manager from their employee's point of view and employee retention. In each case, the correlation of the employee retention scale with the empathy scale (Empathie gesamt-Skala) showed a positive relationship between the variables in the form that the higher the value of the empathy scale, the higher the value of the employee retention scale. The empathy of the manager from their employee's point of view is therefore definitely a relevant factor that can contribute positively to employee retention. Thus it can be concluded that especially in times of great uncertainty (e.g. the corona pandemic) and in times of great change, strengthening social bonds by empathy is an important anchor that is not just beneficial for the individual but also for organizations.Masterarbeit Wien, Fachhochschule des BFI Wien 202
Herausforderungen bei der Organisation von Projekten im Gesundheitswesen am Beispiel der deutschen Covid-19-Impfzentren
The World Health Organisation declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic on 12 March 2020. According to researchers and scientists, putting an end to it, requires herd immunity within the population. Vaccination is considered as one of the most promising strategies in order to mitigate the pandemic and their effects on the economy and the health care system. Therefore, it is of great importance and public interest to advance the project "vaccination" with high efficiency through the organisation and commissioning of vaccination centres.
The aim of this master thesis is to take a closer look at the challenges experienced during the process of organising and running vaccination centres in Germany for the first time. The methodology is characterised by semi-structured interviews, conducted with five participants working at a vaccination centre in North Germany. The interview participants have different roles within the vaccination centres.
The research has highlighted a variety of aspects that have made it difficult to set up a vaccination centre in the exceptional situation of a pandemic. The health system in Germany is not based on a state health system, so no existing state structures could be used. No provisions had been made for the occurrence of a pandemic, either. Therefore, there were no plans for mass vaccination. The development of vaccines was massively advanced worldwide, but nevertheless there was no structured planning for the implementation of the foreseeable and hoped-for mass vaccinations in Germany.
From the research conducted, the impression can be deduced that the ultimately successful establishment of vaccination centres in Schleswig-Holstein was largely based on a great deal of commitment on the behalf of the organisations involved, and especially due to the dedication made by individuals. Their motivation to advance the vaccination campaign and contribute to ending the pandemic made the establishment and functioning of the vaccination centres possible. This applies both to the respective management, but also especially to the many volunteers in all areas.Masterarbeit Wien, Fachhochschule des BFI Wien 202
Effekte der Covid Krise auf die Regionen (Österreich Peripherie) : Arbeit, Wohnen und Entwicklung
This thesis examines the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on the housing prices in Austria. The research question that will be analyzed is how the possibility of home-office for the employees in Austria influenced the real estate prices. In the past two years, and especially during the lockdowns, a lot of people faced issues with lack of working and living space in their smaller city apartments. This is of even higher importance for parents at home-office with children in a school age who had to study from home.
In 2020 and 2021 the housing prices in Austria reached a record increase. The causes and effects of this increase are thoroughly analyzed in this paper. In order to achieve that, the paper starts with an overview of the Covid-19 influence on the world-wide economy. This general understanding helps to follow the effects particularly in Austria. Later the paper takes a deep dive into how the change to home-office work affects the housing market in Austria. Working remotely or from home-office was not popular in Austria until 2020 when it became a necessity due the pandemic. This new work environment created another need for more space at home. Therefore, every region of Austria is analyzed, with special focus on Vienna as the capital city and its suburban areas. In the conclusion this paper will summarize the main outcomes of the analyzes and gives an answer to the research question.Masterarbeit Wien, Fachhochschule des BFI Wien 202
Die digitale Transformation als Lösung für Gender Diversity im Top Management
The proportional representation of women in leadership positions is at the centre of a longstanding controversial discussion. The absence of more women on the company’s board of directors is the tip of the iceberg of a huge and urgent task. Gender equality is not only a basic human right, but it is also a key to building prosperous, modern companies.
Digital transformation has become a priority across all industries. The struggle for women to progress in the workplace is well documented over the years. With the help of digital technologies there is a real opportunity for change. The technological revolution is reshaping the everyday life and work. These technologies set the need for transformation of businesses to keep pace in a very rapid changing and complex world. Digital transformation has become a critical pillar for businesses to create social and economic progress. To succeed, businesses need to have more diverse leadership teams, who understand what employees want and need when it comes to transformative technology. Women possess superior social skills that can result in attractive entrepreneurial rewards in the digital age. These competencies include a heightened sense of responsibility towards the wider community, greater empathy, more effective communication and collaborative problem-solving skills, and a greater willingness to adapt to changing circumstances.
The present study empirically investigates the determinants of the share of women in managing positions. This study aims to deepen the understanding of experiences and challenges women face in the upper echelon and why the digital transformation is a solution to this very urgent topic. In open interviews, six women, working as directors or on executive boards in Germany and Austria, talked about their experiences as female leaders. Based on an analysis of the interview data according to qualitative content analysis, women experience an ambivalence, caused by male norms and gendered expectations in the upper echelon. The findings imply that gender balance on board level can be achieved through organizational changes. To that the implementation of further measures by government and businesses is necessary. These changes potentially resolve the found ambivalence and compensate for the extra challenges women face.Masterarbeit Wien, Fachhochschule des BFI Wien 202
