Rehabilitación de vivenda tradicional sita en A Lagoa, 13, Ouces, Bergondo, A Coruña

    Get PDF
This Master's Thesis is based on the rehabilitation of a traditional nineteenth‐century single‐family house, with which the author has a strong emotional bond. . The academic work includes an investigation of the essence of the building, with an exhaustive analysis of its pathologies and shortcomings. Based on this, the rehabilitation actions of the building are proposed. The methodological order is as follows: ‐Firstly: Consolidate the building with the necessary interventions in walls and wooden structure ‐Secondly: Repair what has been damaged: Exterior carpentry... etc ‐Thirdly: To correct some previous interventions that the author considers unfortunate ‐Finally: intervene to improve the operation and use of the building, adapting it to current needs. In short, it is the rehabilitation of a traditional building in the Galician countryside to adapt it to the services demanded following a philosophy of continuity. It will be treated as one more adjustment in the life cycle of the building. It is understood as a counterposition to radical interventions or the processes of demolition and new construction with the environmental, referential and memory impacts of the place that this entails. Although not every building deserves to be rehabilitated, and not in all cases this is economically possible, this building is proposed as a case study.[Resumo] Este TFM baséase na rehabilitación dunha vivenda unifamiliar tradicional do século XIX, coa que o autor ten un forte vínculo emocional. [Abstract] In Galicia (NW Spain), granite was the most used stone material in historical buildings. Despite the good properties of granite as a construction material, it overcomes several physical and chemical weathering processes that cause decay, resulting in a loss of value in building materials, architectural elements and details. This is caused by a range of processes, from aesthetic damage to stone erosion. The causes of such decay are well known from case studies of historical buildings, being correlated with atmospheric agents, air pollution and aggregate materials, among others. In this work, we studied 15 historical monuments built with granite blocks of the architectural Heritage of the Barbanza Peninsula (Galicia). Because of the geographic features of this area, there is a steep rainfall and sea spray gradient that allows us to study historical buildings exposed to different environmental conditions in a short distance from the shoreline to inland. We used geochemical, petrological and microscopic tools to assess the decay of the granites and compared the results with environmental factors to assess the role of humidity (rainfall) and sea spray on the decay. Both the observation of coatings and the assessment of weathering have shown that buildings close to the shoreline are more affected by sea salts, while buildings far from the coast are mostly affected by biological weathering. Surprisingly, chemical weathering is higher in a strip area some hundreds of meters away from the sea shore and at lower altitudes (between 10 and 30 m). Indeed, very good correlation is observed for weathering indices, such as CIA, MWPI, VR, Si-Ti index, Kr, CAN and AKN, with a distance to the shoreline from 0.5 km, with linear correlation values ranging from −0.91 to 0.80.Funding: This research was funded by the Consellería de Cultura, Educacion, e Ordenacion Universitaria, Xunta de Galicia, Spain (program ED431B 2021/17). Paradigm shift: students’ perceptions of work models and well-being

    Get PDF
[Abstract]: Purpose: This study aims to explore the benefits and drawbacks of different work models, including hybrid and remote models, as perceived by millennial and Gen Z students in Spain. Additionally, it seeks to identify ways to promote work engagement in the context of this paradigm shift. Design/methodology/approach: The study involved forty-four undergraduate and graduate students who participated in two classroom discussions on the impact of hybrid and remote work models on well-being. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Findings: The results indicate that students' expectations have significantly shifted, and HR managers need to implement hybrid and remote work models to ensure a balance between long-term employee and organisational interests. Younger generations seek flexibility in work and education to achieve a better quality of life, rather than a 100% remote system. Originality/value: The growing demand for hybrid and flexible working has the potential to create a paradigm shift in the way we work. This study contributes to the organisational behaviour literature by investigating the factors that organisations and policymakers should consider when implementing work models in response to the pandemic to promote well-being. The practical implications of this study can be useful for organisations and educators seeking to adapt to this changing work landscape

Sistema automático de detección y clasificación de enfermedades neurodegenerativas mediante análisis de la retina en tomografía de coherencia óptica

    Get PDF
These disorders impact not only the brain but also the retina and optic nerve, alterations that can be detected early on through Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Early identification of these diseases via OCT is crucial for timely and effective diagnosis. In our research, we have developed an innovative methodology that combines OCT images with advanced machine learning techniques, specifically the use of convolutional neural networks. We have enhanced our approach by incorporating three-dimensional models, providing a more comprehensive and detailed representation of the retina. This combination not only improves the resolution of the images but also facilitates a more thorough analysis, marking a milestone in the field. Thanks to this innovative approach, our system is capable of accurately and automatically classifying patients into five clinically relevant categories: Control, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and Essential Tremor. Our system stands out for its speed and objectivity in classification, significantly enhancing the precision and efficiency of diagnosing neurodegenerative diseases through noninvasive methods. The inclusion of three-dimensional models offers a more detailed and indepth view for identifying pathological characteristics, leading to earlier, more reliable, and precise diagnoses. This advancement represents a significant leap forward towards developing more effective treatments, contributing substantially to improving the quality of life for patients.Traballo fin de grao (UDC.FIC). Multi-task localization of the hemidiaphragms and lung segmentation in portable chest X-ray images of COVID-19 patients

    Get PDF
[Absctract]: Background: The COVID-19 can cause long-term symptoms in the patients after they overcome the disease. Given that this disease mainly damages the respiratory system, these symptoms are often related with breathing problems that can be caused by an affected diaphragm. The diaphragmatic function can be assessed with imaging modalities like computerized tomography or chest X-ray. However, this process must be performed by expert clinicians with manual visual inspection. Moreover, during the pandemic, the clinicians were asked to prioritize the use of portable devices, preventing the risk of cross-contamination. Nevertheless, the captures of these devices are of a lower quality. Objectives: The automatic quantification of the diaphragmatic function can determine the damage of COVID-19 on each patient and assess their evolution during the recovery period, a task that could also be complemented with the lung segmentation. Methods: We propose a novel multi-task fully automatic methodology to simultaneously localize the position of the hemidiaphragms and to segment the lung boundaries with a convolutional architecture using portable chest X-ray images of COVID-19 patients. For that aim, the hemidiaphragms’ landmarks are located adapting the paradigm of heatmap regression. Results: The methodology is exhaustively validated with four analyses, achieving an 82.31% +- 2.78% of accuracy when localizing the hemidiaphragms’ landmarks and a Dice score of 0.9688 +- 0.0012 in lung segmentation. Conclusions: The results demonstrate that the model is able to perform both tasks simultaneously, being a helpful tool for clinicians despite the lower quality of the portable chest X-ray images. The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: This work was supported by Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, Government of Spain through the research project with [grant numbers PID2019-108435RB-I00, TED2021-131201B-I00, and PDC2022-133132-I00]; Consellería de Educación, Universidade, e Formación Profesional, Xunta de Galicia, Grupos de Referencia Competitiva, [grant number ED431C 2020/24], predoctoral grant [grant number ED481A 2021/196]; CITIC, Centro de Investigación de Galicia [grant number ED431G 2019/01], receives financial support from Consellería de Educación, Universidade e Formación Profesional, Xunta de Galicia, through the ERDF (80%) and Secretaría Xeral de Universidades (20%). The relationship of kinesiophobia in patients with lymphedema: a case-control investigation

    Get PDF
[Abstract] Kinesiophobia and lymphedema appear to be related conditions, and it is important to understand this relationship, as many of the symptoms and comorbidities presented by individuals with lower limb lymphedema are prevented and treated through movement, thus constituting kinesiophobia as a barrier to intervention. The objective of this study is, therefore, to evaluate and analyze the kinesiophobic beliefs reported by individuals with and without lower limb lymphedema, regarding the agreement, severity and differences found, and to establish levels of kinesiophobia. Methods: A case-control study with a total sample of 80 participants (40 with lower limb lymphedema and 40 without) was performed. Both groups (with and without lymphedema) were characterized anthropologically, sociodemographically, and clinically. In the case group, lymphedema was evaluated. Participants in both groups completed the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia - 13 items (TSK-13). Results: Individuals with lower limb lymphedema had higher TSK-13 scores than their matched group without lymphedema. The items belonging to the activity avoidance subscale had the highest agreement and score in both groups. Differences between groups were mainly established for items belonging to the somatic focus subscale, showing that individuals with lower limb lymphedema have kinesiophobic beliefs related to the perceived severity of their lymphedema. The prevalence of kinesiophobia was increased in both groups, but the severity was mild. Conclusions: Considering the apparent tendency of people with lower limb lymphedema to present kinesiophobia and movement-limiting beliefs regarding the condition, greater attention should be paid to its assessment, prevention and treatment from a multidisciplinary and multimodal perspective, which takes into account the multiplicity of factors inherent to kinesiophobia and lymphedema and thus reduce their impact on the management of lymphedema
