VERIFICATION OF SIMPLIFIED APPROACH WITH NUMERICAL APPROACH IN ANALYSING PILED – RAFT FOUND ATIONS
VERIFICATION OF SIMPLIFIED APPROACH WITH NUMERICAL
APPROACH IN ANALYSING PILED – RAFT FOUND
ATIONSThe c
oncept of piled rafts combines the
load bearing elements which includes piles, raft and soil in
a composite structure. The interaction behavior between the various components of piled raft system is a
complex geotechnical engineering problem which demands a robust analysis technique to accommodate
such effects. Over the past decades a great number of different calculation methods have been developed to
analyze the load – bearing behavior of piled rafts. The goal of this paper is to highlight the difference in the
output between the simplified non - linear method of (Polous and Davis) and the plate on piles and
continuum method. For that, a hypothetical example is analyzed using the two aforementioned analysis
techniques. The latter approach necessitates the use of the finite element method which herein involved
using the PLAXIS 3D FOUNDATION. The first approach was used to estimate the load – settlement pattern
for different piled raft configurations which involved number of factors that influence the load – settlement
criteria of the system namely the number of piles, piles length and piles diameter. The simplified method was
followed by the (FEM) to verify the results obtained by the first method and to obtain the load distribution
between the piles. It was noticed that the simplified method of (Polous and Davis) is suitable to predict the
average settlement and the corresponding number of piles yet fall short to obtain any additional parameters.
On the other hand, the (FEM) had the advantage to obtain the distributions of settlement, pile load and raft

Regeneration and Growth of Acacia senegal (L.) Willd Seedlings in the Nursery as Affected by Tree Manures and NPK Fertilizer
This paper had been presented for promotion at the university of Khartoum. To get the full text please contact the other at [email protected] study aimed to assess the effects of tree manures in comparison with
NPK fertilizer on growth of Acacia senegal seedlings. It was conducted in
the nursery of the Faculty of Forestry, Shambat, during August 2008 and
January 2009. The growing media were prepared by mixing ground
foliage of tree with a clay soil (weight/volume) as follows:- Albizia
lebbeck (AL): 25 g, 50 g and 75 g; Azadirachta indica (AZ): 25 g, 50 g
and 75 g; Khaya senegalensis (KH): 25 g, 50 g and 75 g; NPK fertilizer:
30 g per seedling. A. senegal seed germination percentage increased
significantly in tree manures in comparison with NPK and control media.
A. senegal seedlings’ growth in the treatments varied as follows:- AZ =
NPK >AL > KH > control for shoot length; KH > AL > AZ > NPK >
control for root length; AZ > NPK > KH > AL > control for diameter;
NPK = AZ > AL > KH > control for shoot biomass and AZ > NPK > KH
> AL > control for root biomass. Therefore, A. senegal seedlings' growth
was higher in A. indica and NPK fertilizer media, moderate in A. lebbeck
media and poor in K. senegalensis and the control media. However, the
root growth occurred at an opposite rate outlined for the other growth
parameters. These findings indicate good fertilizing and ameliorating
potential of tree manures and can be used in nursery growing media and
as substitutes for inorganic fertilizers
