Search for the rare decay eta ' -> pi(0)pi(0)pi(0)pi(0) at BESIII

    No full text
Using a sample of 1.31 x 10(9) J/psi events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform a search for the rare decay if eta' -> 4 pi(0) via J/psi -> gamma eta'. No significant eta' signal is observed in the 4 pi(0) invariant mass spectrum. With a Bayesian approach, the upper limit on the branching fraction is determined to be B(eta' -> 4 pi(0)) < 4.94 x 10(-5) at the 90% confidence level, which is a factor of 6 smaller than the previous experimental limit

    Future Physics Programme of BESIII

There has recently been a dramatic renewal of interest in hadron spectroscopy and charm physics. This renaissance has been driven in part by the discovery of a plethora of charmonium-like XYZ states at BESIII and B factories, and the observation of an intriguing proton-antiproton threshold enhancement and the possibly related X(1835) meson state at BESIII, as well as the threshold measurements of charm mesons and charm baryons. We present a detailed survey of the important topics in tau-charm physics and hadron physics that can be further explored at BESIII during the remaining operation period of BEPCII. This survey will help in the optimization of the data-taking plan over the coming years, and provides physics motivation for the possible upgrade of BEPCII to higher luminosity

Evaluation of Supplementary Constraints on Dispersion of EDPs Using Real Ground Motion Record Sets

Nonlinear dynamic analysis is the most advanced structural analysis method, and it has become very widespread method to determine structural responses for seismic design or assessment. On the other hand, structural responses strongly rely on the selection of earthquake records for nonlinear dynamic analysis. In this study, several earthquake record selection strategies which impose different compatibility levels between the spectral shape of earthquake records and target spectrum are introduced. Eurocode-8 procedure is considered as reference record selection strategy. Four main engineering demand parameters (EDPs): maximum floor acceleration, global drift ratio, inter-story drift ratio and residual global drift ratio, are used to investigate the superiority of presented strategies. Nonlinear dynamic analyses of three representative low- and mid-rise RC frames are carried out to obtain the EDPs. The central tendency and dispersion of the EDPs are utilized to investigate efficiency of the strategies. Results indicated that the EDPs are correlated with dispersion of spectral accelerations. Numerical evaluations have also highlighted that the presented strategies are capable of providing consistent mean structural responses. It is thought that the presented strategies can be used to select real earthquake records for nonlinear dynamic analysis of structures

Zontul, Metin (Arel Author), Karateke, Seda (Arel Author)Reliable prediction of municipal solid waste (MSW) generation rates is a significant element of planning and implementation of sustainable solid waste management strategies. In this study, the multi-layer perceptron artificial neural network (MLP-ANN) is applied to verify the prediction of annual generation rates of domestic, commercial and construction and demolition (C&D) wastes from the year 1997 to 2016 in Askar Landfill site in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The proposed robust predictive models incorporated selected explanatory variables to reflect the influence of social, demographical, economic, geographical and touristic factors upon waste generation rates (WGRs). The Mean Squared Error (MSE) and coefficient of determination (R-2) are used as performance indicators to evaluate effectiveness of the developed models. MLP-ANN models exhibited strong accuracy in predictions with highR(2)and low MSE values. TheR(2)values for domestic, commercial and C&D wastes are 0.95, 0.99 and 0.91, respectively. Our results show that the developed MLP-ANN models are effective for the prediction of WGRs from different sources and could be considered as a cost-effective approach for planning integrated MSW management systems

The Nexus Between the Democratic Transition and the Structural Transformation

    No full text
There are several theoretical and empirical papers on the structural transformation but there is not a study relating structural transformation with the political regime switch in the country. This paper aims to fill the gap in relevant literature by empirically examining the linkage between the political regime switch and the structure of the economy. The main purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of the political regime switch on the share of the agricultural value added in the GDP. Due to endogeneity issues, Difference GMM methodology is used to test the hypothesis that the democratization leads to the structural transformation of the economy by using data for 43 countries over the period from 1970-2016. The estimation results confirm that the share of agricultural value in total value added is higher when the country is ruled by an autocratic system rather than a democratic system. Moreover, the estimation results indicate that per capita GDP, arable land, and trade openness have a negative significant, whereas financial development, fertility, and population have a positive significant impact on the value added share of agriculture

Şahin, Yeşim Müge (Arel Author)In this study, a novel reagent was developed for sensitive detection of iron (II) sulfate, spectrophotometrically. A novel thio-anthraquinone derivative, 1-(Dodecylthio)anthracene-9,10-dione (3), was synthesized from the chemical reaction of 1-Chloroanthraquinone (1) and 1-Dodecanethiol (2) by an original reaction method and was used in the preparation of the novel reagent called Catal's reagent. A synthesized thio-anthraquinone analogue (3) waspurified by columnchromatography, and its chemical structurewas characterized by spectroscopic methods such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry (MS), and ultraviolet (UV)-visible spectrophotometry. The chemical and molecular structure of the developed thio-antraquinone derivative (3) was illuminated using computational methods with the GaussView5 and Gaussian09 programs. Various solvents including ethanol, methanol, and acetonitrile were examined in the preparation of the reagent. A concentration range from 0.2 mg mL(-1) up to 10 mg mL(-1) of iron (II) sulfate heptahydrate solution in distilled waterwas prepared. The absorption spectra of Catal's reagent (0.816mM) showed three peaks between 185 nm-700 nmofwavelength. However, after the reactionwith H2O2 and the 30 mM trisodium citrate dihydrate mixture in the presence of an iron sulfate (II) solution, a single peak was observed, producing a stable and reddish/brownish homogenous solution (lambda max= 304 nm). The following concentrations of iron (II) sulfate heptahydratewas examined using developed protocol and the reagent, and the concentrationswere measured spectrophotometrically at 304 nm, 0.2-1mg mL(-1). Absorbances of reaction mixtures of iron (II) sulfate remained stable up to 48 h. The results indicated that the novel Catal's reagent can be used for sensitive spectrophotometric detection of iron (II) sulfate in aqueous solutions. (c) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Measurement of cross sections for e(+) e(-) -> mu(+) mu(-) at center-of-mass energies from 3.80 to 4.60 GeV

    No full text
The observed cross sections for e(+)e(-) -> mu(+) mu(-) at energies from 3.8 to 4.6 GeVare measured using data samples taken with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider. We measure the muonic widths and determine the branching fractions of the charmonium states psi(4040), psi(4160), and psi(4415) decaying to mu(+)mu(-), as well as making a first determination of the phase of the amplitudes. In addition, we observe evidence for a structure in the dimuon cross section near 4.220 GeV/(c)2, which we denote as So4220+. Analyzing a coherent sum of amplitudes yields eight solutions, one of which gives a mass of M-S(4220) = 4216.7 +/- 8.9 +/- 4.1 MeV/c(2), a total width of Gamma(tot+)(S(4220)) = 47.2 +/- 22.8 +/- 10.5 MeV, and a muonic width of Gamma(mu mu)(S(4220))+ = 1.53 +/- 1.26 +/- 0.54 keV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The eight solutions give the central values of the mass, total width, muonic width to be, respectively, in the range from 4212.8 to 4219.4 MeV/c(2), from 36.4 to 49.6 MeV, and from 1.09 to 1.53 keV. The statistical significance of the S(4220) signal is 3.9 sigma. Correcting the total dimuon cross section for radiative effects yields a statistical significance for this structure of 8.1 sigma

Application of artificial intelligence algorithms on modeling of reflection phase characteristics of a nonuniform reflectarray element

    No full text
Reflectarray antennas (RAs) have the ability to combine the advantages of both traditional parabolic reflector and phased array antennas without the need for feed network designs. Microstrip reflectarrays (MRAs) have the advantages of being small size, light weighted, easy to prototyped, high gain, low side-lobe level, and a predetermined radiation pattern. These can be achieved by precise calculation of reflection phase at each RA unit independently with a phase compensation proportional to the distance from the feed. The challenging problem is to have a fast and high accurate unit element to be used in multidimension, multiobjective design optimization. Herein, artificial intelligence algorithms (AIAs) have been used for prediction of reflection phase characterization of an X band MRA unit element with respect to the geometrical design parameters. Firstly, a nonuniform unit RA has been designed in 3D electromagnetic (EM) simulation tool for creating the training validation data sets. Then, the data sets are given to the different types of AIA regression models such as multilayer perceptron, symbolic regression, and convolutional neural network. From the results of the validation data set, it can be concluded that the proposed models have sufficient accuracy that can be used in a computationally efficient design optimization process of a large-scale RA design. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
