This manuscript delineates an extensive inquiry into a structure in Ankara, Turkey, specifically focusing on its existing state, retrofitting initiative, and concomitant software development. The evaluation of the building's current state, earthquake loads, and anticipated structural stresses was conducted per the Turkish Seismic Code of 2018. The structural model was analysed, incorporating data derived from on -site inspections, surveys, and samples from the building's concrete core and reinforcement elements by employing non-linear calculation methods. Remedial measures were undertaken after recognising deficiencies in the structure's performance, including strengthening columns and selecting slabs by applying Fibre -Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites. Subsequently, the authors engineered the FRP Composite Column Strengthening software. This software facilitates the computation of axial compression strength, shear strength, and ductility enhancements for columns after the retrofitting process

The Syrian civil war caused humanitarian tragedy, resulting in significant losses and massive migration movement, significantly impacting nursing services. The purpose of this study was to identify the problems and experiences of nurses who provided care for Syrian asylum seekers in Turkish border hospitals during the war. This phenomenological and qualitative research selected participants with maximum diversity sampling. Interviews were conducted with 68 nurses who provided care and treatment to asylum seekers during the peak of the war. Data analysis identified two main themes and nine sub-themes: language differences, interpreting services, intercultural differences, complex patients, non-compliance with hospital rules, treatment programmes and discharge issues. The nurses experienced both positive and negative emotions during the process. During the Syrian war, patient care issues were identified as being primarily caused by language and cultural differences among asylum seekers and nurses. During this process, nurses who cared for severe injuries and asylum-seekers experienced both positive and negative emotions simultaneously

Comparison of Functional Mobility Performances of People with Alzheimer's Disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Cognitively Healthy Individuals

    No full text
Background: One of the important factors that make it difficult to carry out activities of daily living independently is the decrease in functional mobility. Mobility-related disability is a major public health issue that reduces the quality of life and increases the need for care, the burden, and the cost of care. However, in the early stages of dementia, the deterioration in motor skills is often overlooked. This study aimed to compare the mobility performance of healthy individuals and people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (pwMCI) and Alzheimer’s disease (pwAD). Method: Cognitive level was measured with Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and mobility performance was measured using Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) and 5 Times Sit to Stand Test (5XSTST). Statistical analysis was performed using One Way ANOVA in SPSS v.26 and the level of significance was accepted as p<0.05. Results: 36 pwAD (Age: 74.90±9.25, 53.12% Female), 14 pwMCI (Age: 63.82±12.55 years, 52.6% Female), and 10 cognitively healthy individuals (Age: 60.25±10.23 years, 82% Female) were included the study. The mean of MoCA scores were 12.62±6.36, 22.25±3.04 and 28.5±0.5; TUG results were 15.34±11.83 sec, 7.47±1.41 sec and 6.86±1.98 sec; 5XSTST results were 16,31±7.75 sec, 11.06±1.98 sec and 9.34±2.37 sec. A significant difference was found between the three groups in terms of TUG and 5XSTST results (p = 0.027, p = 0.015, respectively). Conclusion: In pwAD and pwMCI, the decrease in cognition appears to be accompanied by impairment in functional mobility. Motor skills should be evaluated not only in AD diagnosis but also during the prodromal stage to provide early intervention for loss of motor function. Improving motor function should be added to rehabilitation goals before impaired functional mobility begins to affect activities of daily living

Recently, strain sensors have significant areas of usage with their strain, stretching and wearable features for various applications such as personal health monitoring, joint movement detection, robotics, etc. To achieve this, various studies are conducted to optimize the production of MWCNT-based nanocomposites. In the present study, a total of 12 solutions were formulated by introducing Multi -Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT) and Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) at different concentrations and ratios into the Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) solution, and then nanocomposite surfaces were produced from these solutions through an electrospinning process. These samples were subjected to resistance changes due to elongation, gauge factor changes due to elongation to evaluate the sensor property and cycle tests to evaluate the sustainability of the sensor feature. According to the results, the best sensor properties were obtained in the samples with SDS added at a rate of 1/20 (MWCNT:SDS) for 0.3 MWCNT and 0.5 MWCNT; on the other hand 1/26 weight ratio of MWCNT:SDS for 0.7 MWCNT

Benzene sulfonamides are an important biological substituent for several activities. In this study, hybridization of benzene sulfonamide with piperazine derivatives were investigated for their antioxidant capacity and enzyme inhibitory potencies. Six molecules were synthesized and characterized. DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, CUPRAC, chelating and phosphomolybdemum assays were applied to evaluate antioxidant capacities. Results show that compounds have high antioxidant capacity and compound 4 has the best antioxidant activity among them. Compound 4 has higher antioxidant activity than references for FRAP (IC50: 0.08 mM), CUPRAC (IC50: 0.21 mM) and phosphomolybdenum (IC50: 0.22 mM) assays. Besides this, compound 4 has moderate DPPH and ABTS antioxidant capacity. Furthermore, enzyme inhibition activities of these molecules were investigated against AChE, BChE, tyrosinase, alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase enzymes. It was revealed that all compounds have good enzyme inhibitory potential except for alpha-amylase enzyme. The best inhibitory activities were observed for AChE with compound 5 the same value (IC50: 1.003 mM), for BChE with compounds 2 and 5 the same value (IC50: 1.008 mM), for tyrosinase compound 4 (IC50: 1.19 mM), and for alpha-glucosidase with compound 3 (IC50: 1.000 mM). Docking studies have been conducted with these molecules, and the results correlate well with the inhibitory assays

    No full text
Attachment and emotion regulation affect various aspects of an individual's life throughout the lifespan and into adulthood, and are known to be associated with various psychopathologies. Based on a review of the literature, attachment styles and the management of negative emotions have a significant role in the development and maintenance of Binge Eating Disorder (BED). Previous studies have found that insecure attachment styles increase the risk of developing BED, but the role of emotion regulation difficulties has not been assessed. The aim of the current study is to examine the role of emotion regulation difficulties in the relationship between insecure attachment styles and symptoms of BED. The sample of the current study consisted of 364 participants (238 females, 126 males) aged 18-65 years (M = 35.27, SD = 10.00) residing in different provinces of Turkey. Sociodemographic information form, Binge Eating Disorder Scale (BEDS), Difficulty in Emotion Regulation Scale-Short Form (DERS-16), and Inventory of Experiences in Close Relationships-2 were administered to the participants. The results of the present study showed that difficulties in emotion regulation played a mediating role in the relationship between symptoms of BED and avoidant and anxious attachment styles. The results of the current study highlight the importance of clinicians assessing attachment styles and emotion regulation difficulties, examining the interaction of these variables together, and providing interventions accordingly when faced with symptoms of BED

The aim of the study was to investigate the frequency and types of mutations on the retinoblastoma gene (RB1 gene) in Turkish population. RB1 gene mutation analysis was performed in a total of 219 individuals (122 probands with retinoblastoma, 14 family members with retinoblastoma and 83 clinically healthy family members). All 27 exons and close intronic regions of the RB1 gene were sequenced for small deletions and insertions using both the Sanger sequencing or NGS methods, and the large deletions and duplications were investigated using the MLPA analysis and CNV algorithm. The bilateral/trilateral retinoblastoma rate was 66% in the study population. The general frequency of RB1 gene mutation in the germline of the patients with retinoblastoma was 41.9%. Approximately 51.5% of the patients were diagnosed earlier than 12 months old, and de novo mutation was found in 32.4% of the patients. Germline small genetic rearrangement mutations were detected in 78.9% of patients and LGRs were detected in 21.1% of patients. An association was detected between the eye color of the RB patients and RB1 mutations. 8 of the mutations detected in the RB1 gene were novel in the study

Post-ERCP Pancreatitis Risk Factors: Is Post-Sphincterotomy Bleeding Another Risk Factor?

    No full text
Background: Despite advancements in technology and expertise, ERCP carries risks of significant complications, such as pancreatitis, bleeding, and perforation. Post-ERCP pancreatitis is the most common and important complication following ERCP. In our study, we aimed to examine the relationship between patient and procedure-related parameters and the development of pancreatitis. Methods: Four hundred patients who underwent ERCP between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2020, at the General Surgery Clinic of the Bakirköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Health Application and Research Center of the University of Health Sciences Faculty of Medicine were retrospectively evaluated. Patient and procedure-related factors were analyzed statistically through univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: Age, urgent indication, ERCP history, cholangitis, precut sphincterotomy, common bile duct diameter, pancreatic cannulation, pancreatic stent, and bleeding were statistically significant risk factors for post-ERCP pancreatitis (+). In multivariate analysis, the effects of urgent indication, ERCP history, cholangitis, precut sphincterotomy, common bile duct diameter, and pancreatic cannulation on post-ERCP pancreatitis were statistically significant risk factors (P < 0.05). Discussion: This study demonstrates that emergency indication, ERCP history, cholangitis, precut sphincterotomy, and pancreatic cannulation are significant risk factors for the development of post-ERCP pancreatitis. One notable contribution of our study to the existing literature is the unique analysis of post-sphincterotomy bleeding as an independent factor. Copyright © 2023 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc.
