Chemical characterization and biological abilities of Anthocleista djalonensis collected from two locations of Ivory Coast
In this study, the total phenolic and flavonoid contents, HPLC-DAD detected phytochemicals, antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory potential of methanolic and aqueous (as infusion) extracts of the medicinal plant, Anthocleista djalonensis (leaf and stem bark) collected from two locations, Mafiblé and Prikro, in Ivory Coast, were investigated. The ranges of total phenolic and flavonoid contents obtained were 14.17–46.95 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g and 2.96–34.76 mg rutin equivalent (RE)/g, respectively. Antioxidant abilities in terms of radical scavenging, reducing and metal chelating activity of the extracts in different assays were as follows: DPPH (4.90–48.82 mg trolox equivalent [TE]/g), ABTS (21.05–81.89 mg TE/g), CUPRAC (29.54–122.33 mg TE/g), FRAP (17.53–94.06 mg TE/g) and metal chelating (10.09–28.49 mg EDTAE/g. The extracts of A. djalonensis collected from Mafiblé, especially those of stem bark, contained higher level of total bioactive contents compared to Prikro extracts, detected by high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode-array detection (HPLC-DAD). Only the methanolic extracts irrespective of plant parts/location, showed inhibition against acetylcholinesterase (1.42–2.12 mg galantamine equivalent (GALAE)/g), while only the stem bark methanolic extract of A. djalonensis from Mafiblé was found to inhibit butyrylcholinesterase (0.65 mg GALAE/g). Chemical characterization of Glaucosciadum cordifolium extracts obtained by different extraction techniques and their biopharmaceutical effects
Glaucosciadium cordifolium (Apiaceae) is traditionally used against stomach ailments, as aphrodisiac and appetizer. This study endeavored to characterize several extracts of G. cordifolium aerial parts (prepared by various isolation procedures (ASE: Accelerated solvent extraction; HAE: homogenizer-assisted extract; MAE: Microwave-assisted extraction; MAC: Maceration; SFE: supercritical CO2 extraction; SOX: Soxhlet; UAE: Ultrasound-assisted extraction) and evaluate the antioxidant activity and inhibitory activity against clinical enzymes. In order to describe the composition of the extracts liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis was employed. Of the total number of confirmed polyphenol components (15 in total), four were dominant in their content: 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid, p-coumaric acid, quercetin-3-O-glucoside and quercetin-3-O-rhamnoside. Spectrophotometric analysis showed that the total phenolic and flavonoid contents differed among the extracts, which was influenced by extraction technique used for their preparation. The phenolic content of the different extracts varied in the order HAE > UAE > MAC > SOX > MAE > ASE > SFE. HAE extract yielded the highest phenolic content (49.97 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g) while SFE demonstrated the lowest phenolic content (21.65 mg GAE/g). MAC extracts contained the highest flavonoids (50.35 mg rutin equivalent (RE)/g) while SFE extract showed the lowest flavonoid content (10.87 mg RE/g). UAE, MAC, MAE, HAE, SOX and ASE showed significant DPPH antioxidant activities and the values of radical inhibitory capacity varied in the range of 55.79–54.99 mg TE/g. SFE demonstrated weak DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical inhibitory activity with a value 7.0 mg TE/g. UAE showed the highest ABTS (2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) cation radical inhibitory potential (122.41 mg trolox equivalent (TE)/g). The CUPRAC (cupric reducing antioxidant capacity) activity of UAE was remarkable with a value of 193.58 mg TE/g. A gradual decrease in activity was observed with extracts obtained from other extraction techniques with the lowest antioxidant activity (77.0 mg TE/g) obtained from SFE extract. The highest antioxidant recorded by Phosphomolybdenum was found in HAE extract (1.62 mmol TE/g). SFE showed the highest metal chelating activity (27.30 mg ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTAE)/g). Regarding the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity, MAE and ASE extracts showed the highest potential with a value of 4.06 and 4.05 mg galanthamine equivalent (GALAE)/g respectively. All tested extracts showed considerable whitening activity and SFE revealed the highest activity against tyrosinase (93.82 mg kojic acid equivalent (KAE)/g). In addition, SFE showed the best inhibitory ability against amylase (0.71 mmol acarbose equivalent (ACAE)/g). However, the extracts had similar glucosidase inhibitory effects (1.64–1.71 mmol ACAE/g). The rich chemical composition of the extracts and joint action of different classes of polyphenolic compounds in them may be responsible for their high biological activity. Extracts with the highest activity could serve in the future as an important tool for controlling the activity of clinically important enzymes and take their place in the official formulation after additional pharmacological tests. © 2023 Elsevier Lt
Treatment efficacy of ribociclib or palbociclib plus letrozole in hormone receptor-positive/HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer
Background: Ribociclib, palbociclib and abemaciclib are currently approved CDK4/6 inhibitors along with aromatase inhibitors as the first-line standard-of-care for patients with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer. Methods: The authors report retrospective real-life data for 600 patients with estrogen receptor- and/or progesterone receptor-positive and HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer who were treated with ribociclib and palbociclib in combination with letrozole. Results & conclusion: The results demonstrated that the combination of palbociclib or ribociclib with letrozole has similar progression-free survival and overall survival benefit in real life for the patient group with similar clinical features. Specifically, endocrine sensitivity may be a factor to be considered in the treatment preference
Adding New Scientific Evidences on the Pharmaceutical Properties of Pelargonium quercetorum Agnew Extracts by Using In Vitro and In Silico Approaches
Pelargonium quercetorum is a medicinal plant traditionally used for treating intestinal worms. In the present study, the chemical composition and bio-pharmacological properties of P. quercetorum extracts were investigated. Enzyme inhibition and scavenging/reducing properties of water, methanol, and ethyl acetate extracts were assayed. The extracts were also studied in an ex vivo experimental model of colon inflammation, and in this context the gene expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) were assayed. Additionally, in colon cancer HCT116 cells, the gene expression of transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M (melastatin) member 8 (TRPM8), possibly involved in colon carcinogenesis, was conducted as well. The extracts showed a different qualitative and quantitative content of phytochemicals, with water and methanol extracts being richer in total phenols and flavonoids, among which are flavonol glycosides and hydroxycinnamic acids. This could explain, at least in part, the higher antioxidant effects shown by methanol and water extracts, compared with ethyl acetate extract. By contrast, the ethyl acetate was more effective as cytotoxic agent against colon cancer cells, and this could be related, albeit partially, to the content of thymol and to its putative ability to downregulate TRPM8 gene expression. Additionally, the ethyl acetate extract was effective in inhibiting the gene expression of COX-2 and TNF alpha in isolated colon tissue exposed to LPS. Overall, the present results support future studies for investigating protective effects against gut inflammatory diseases
Facial Recognition in Hexagonal Domain – A Frontier Approach
Many face-recognition (FR) methods have been proposed thus far. Although FR has achieved wisdom in square pixel-based image processing (SIP) due to many studies, this wisdom has not been transferred to Hexagonal pixel-based image processing (HIP) until now. This study presents HIP versions of the most basic texture extraction studies in SIP, namely Gray-Level-Co-occurrence-Matrices (GLCM), Local Binary Pattern (LBP), and our recent work, local-holistic graph-based descriptor (LHGPD). The images are first transformed from the SIP domain to the HIP domain. The HIP domain equivalences (HexGLCM, HexLBP, and HexLHGPD) of the SIP domain GLCM, LBP, and LHGPD are then established. Finally, the facial recognition performances of the SIP and HIP domain versions of GLCM, LBP, and LHGPD are evaluated and compared on the primary data sets. The results of the experiments reveal that HIP domain GLCM, LBP, and LHGPD show a par performance, surpassing them in places when compared to their counterparts in the SIP domain regarding face recognition accuracy. Pilot Scheme Conceptual Analysis of Rooftop East-West-Oriented Solar Energy System with Optimizer
Abstract: In recent years, photovoltaic energy has become a popular alternative to traditional fossil
fuels due to its renewable and sustainable nature, and the incentives provided by countries to
encourage research and development in this field have accelerated the implementation of photovoltaic
roofs. One important factor in maximizing the efficiency of solar panels is their orientation to harness
maximum irradiation with minimum roof area. In this article, an optimizer-supported east–westoriented solar power plant installation is experimentally presented to utilize more solar energy
with less area compared to wide-area south orientation. Furthermore, an analysis of different angle
placements is simulated by PVSOL and PVGIS to test the robustness of the presented approach, and
the pros/cons of the features of the east–west and south orientation are discussed comparatively.
The obtained results are promising for the ideal placement of solar systems along with the use of
optimizers to further enhance their performance, and for the minimization of the economic return of
such an investment
women's expectations from sex are ignored, from the perspective of infertile women
ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to determine the attitudes, behaviours and experiences of infertile women towards sexuality.MethodsThis study was carried out in the infertility outpatient clinic of a state hospital in Istanbul of Turkey. Fifteen infertile women who had been receiving primary infertility treatment for at least two years and were actively continuing infertility treatment were included in the study. Data were collected by means of an detailed information form and a semi-structured interview. Content analysis was applied to the data obtained from semi-structured interviews. Consistency percentage calculation was made between the codes and themes determined by 4 researchers who are experts in their fields.ResultsResults based on the interviews with the participants, 2 main themes, 6 sub-themes and 27 codes related to sub-themes were determined as 'Factors Affecting Sexual Life' and 'Overview of Sexual Health and Sexuality'. 'Disappointment' was determined as the most commonly defined code in the determined main theme and sub-themes.ConclusionIt was determined that the majority of infertile women base their sexual lives on reproductive functions, experience serious sexual health problems, feel worthless, and describe their sexual life as a great disappointment
The Improving Role of Digital Leadership in the Impact of Social Loafing on Job Performance
It is possible to define digital leadership as a type of leadership that is informed about digital
technologies that help the digital transformation of employees and businesses and is also fed
by modern leadership theories. The concept of digital leadership has come to the fore,
particularly with Industry 4.0. Digital leadership is seen as an element that positively affects
organizational culture and helps the development of the organization. Following the Covid-19
pandemic, businesses have experienced a considerable digital transformation, and it has been
realized that digital leadership is now inevitable for businesses. Digital transformation is
expected to contribute to the productivity and production of enterprises. The present study
focused on the ability of digital leadership to avoid social loafing, which is negative
organizational behavior. In particular, the extent to which job performance losses caused by
social loafing were moderated by digital leadership was measured. In this regard, questionnaire
forms were prepared and sent to 308 people. The collected data were interpreted by means
of the Smart PLS program, and the results were obtained. In this respect, it is found that digital
leadership has a moderating impact on the effect of social loafing on job performance. It is
thought that the source of this effect could be explained in accordance with Social Impact
Theory, Upper Echelon Theory, and Strategic Action Area Theory
Six Blind Men and an Elephant: Workaholism vs. Work-Engagement from the Big-Two Personality Perspective rather than the Big Five
Purpose – This study attempts to compare and contrast workaholism and work engagement in terms of
their dispositional antecedents. Although both concepts are perceived as heavy work investment,
workaholism is associated with negative consequences such as burnout, counterproductive behavior,
work-family conflict, psychosomatic symptoms, and declining work performance. Work engagement, on
the other hand, is associated with positive aspects that include superior performance, organizational
commitment, organizational citizenship behavior, physical and mental health. To distinguish a workaholic
from a work engaged employee, this study offers a bird’s eye view using the Big Two, the higher order
traits of the Big Five.
Design/Methodology/Approach – The study is conducted on a sample of 250 full-time teachers (male:
154, female: 96; mean age:33.38 years) who were working at a higher education institution or a K-12 school
in Istanbul, Turkey. The response rate was 90.9%. The convenience sampling method was used in data
collection procedures. The data obtained by the survey method were analyzed using the structural
equation modeling and common method variance techniques.
Finding – According to the results, stability was positively and significantly correlated with work
engagement but negatively and significantly correlated with workaholism. Plasticity, on the other hand,
was correlated strongly and positively with workaholism yet had no statistically significant correlation
with work engagement. The negative and weak correlation between Stability and workaholism became a
stronger path in the structural regression model, indicating the presence of a suppressor effect.
Discussion – The results of this research reveal that if an organization prefers work engaged employees
rather than workaholics, then during the selection process, the hiring decision makers should look for the
trait Stability as well
