Measurement of e(+)e(-) -> D(D)over-bar cross sections at the psi(3770) resonance

    No full text
Kolcu, Onur BuğraWe report new measurements of the cross sections for the production of D (D) over bar final states at the psi(3770) resonance. Our data sample consists of an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) annihilation data produced by the BEPCII collider and collected and analyzed with the BESIII detector. We exclusively reconstruct three D-0 and six D+ hadronic decay modes and use the ratio of the yield of fully reconstructed D (D) over bar events ("double tags") to the yield of all reconstructed D or (D) over bar mesons ("single tags") to determine the number of D-0(D) over bar (0) and D+D- events, benefiting from the cancellation of many systematic uncertainties. Combining these yields with an independent determination of the integrated luminosity of the data sample, we find the cross sections to be sigma(e(+)e(-) -> D-0(D) over bar (0-) )=(3.615 +/- 0.010 +/- 0.038) nb and sigma(e(+)e(-) -> D+D-)=(2.830 +/- 0.011 +/- 0.026) nb, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively

Modeling Morphodynamic Processes in Meandering Rivers with UAV-Basedmeasurements

    No full text
Akay, Semih Sami (Arel Author)Accurate surface models are a crucial component of studies of morphodynamic modeling of rivers and river channel evolution. The high flows that rivers have are caused by changes in flood bed or low canal flow, also it changes river channel morphology. Floods that occur during the spring months cause significant geomorphological changes. In addition to this, low flows during the summer also trigger erosion and superficial accumulation in the ongoing process. Using an accurate, high-resolution, seamless surface models of the river channel and floodplain allows to detect morphological changes of the whole river channel more accurately than using traditional methods. This enables a more comprehensive view of the riverbed evolution. Therefore, high-quality topographical data at different scales are required to study fluvial processes and river dynamics. Nowadays, a combination of photogrammetry and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) systems is widely used for various applications, especially for 3D surface modelling and large scale mapping. UAV systems offer many advantages in terms of cost and image resolution when compared to terrestrial photogrammetry and satellite remote sensing systems. In the study, aerial imaging was carried out via UAV to produce very high resolution surface models based on Structure from Motion (SfM) technique. Multi-temporal topographic data were produced and morphodynamic processes in the Buyuk Menderes River were modeled. Thus, UAV-based a fast and practical way to derive volumetric quantity of lost/gained soil was developed

Search for the rare decay of Psi(3686) -> Lambda+pe(+)e(-) +c.c. at BESIII

    No full text
Based on a data sample of (448.1 +/- 2.9) x 10(6)Psi(3686) decays collected with the BESIII experiment, a search for the flavor changing neutral current transition Psi(3686) -> Lambda(+)(c) pe(+) e(-) + c.c. is performed for the first time. No signal candidates are observed and the upper limit on the branching fraction of Psi(3686) -> Lambda(+)(c) pe(+) e(-) is determined to be 1.7 x 10(-6) at the 90% confidence level. The result is consistent with expectations from the standard model, and no evidence for new physics is found

Analysis of the Impact of Russia’s Sovereign Democracy Model on Central Asian States

Kelkitli, Aslı Fatma (Arel Author)Russia appeared to be a country that did not eschew from resorting to hard power instruments suchas military intervention and economic sanctions in the post-Cold War period. Moscow fought a battleagainst Georgia over South Ossetia in August 2008. It also sent its military personnel to Crimea tocapture strategic points and to take control of the critical infrastructure in February 2014, shortlybefore the referendum which would decide whether the peninsula would merge with Russia. Russiaalso occasionally cut off natural gas supplies to Georgia and Ukraine in the middle of winter when thesetwo pro-Western states failed to pay their accumulated natural gas debt. Yet, Moscow starting from themid-2000s has been taking serious and systematic steps to strengthen and expand its soft power basein its immediate neighbourhood as well. These efforts speeded up in the wake of colour revolutionsin Georgia, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan which resulted in the replacement of friendly governments thatpaid special attention to Russian concerns and sensitivities with new leaders and cadres that aimedto bring their countries closer to the West. This article will examine the Central Asian dimension ofRussia’s soft power policy by borrowing the soft power concept of Joseph Nye. Nye defines soft poweras the capacity to have an impact on or shape the preferences of others by relying upon intangibleassets such as political values, international institutions and culture. So, the study will start with theanalysis of the extent of recognition of Russia’s political values, especially its sovereign democracymodel which prioritizes the demands of the state over those of individuals, lays emphasis on theprinciples of independence, sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs in the intercourse withother states and underlines the primacy of traditional and conservative values such as unity, solidarityand family over individualism, feminism and LGBT rights by the Central Asian political elites. Thearticle will then move on to explore the extent of Russia’s success in exporting the main tenets of thesovereign democracy model to Central Asia by examining some of the agreements, declarations, decisions and practices of the international institutions such as the Commonwealth of IndependentStates, the Collective Security Treaty Organization and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization whichplay significant role in the region. The study will end with the assessment of the cultural aspect of theRussian soft power in Central Asia by investigating the prevalence of Russian language, Russian highereducation institutions, Russian media and Russian mass entertainment in the region

Kolcu, Onur Buğra (Arel Author)We report the first observation of a(0)(0)(980)-f(0)(980) mixing in the decays of J/psi -> phi f(0)(980) -> phi a(0)(0)(980) -> phi eta pi(0) and chi(c1) -> a(0)(0)(980)pi(0) -> f(0)(980)pi(0)->pi(+)pi(-)pi(0), using data samples of 1.31 x 10(9) J/psi events and 4.48 x 10(8) psi (3686) events accumulated with the BESIII detector. The signals of f(0)(980) -> a(0)(0)(980) and a(0)(0)(980) -> f(0)(980) mixing are observed at levels of statistical significance of 7.4 sigma and 5.5 sigma, respectively. The corresponding branching fractions and mixing intensities are measured and the constraint regions on the coupling constants, g(a0K+K-) and g(f0K+K-), are estimated. The results improve the understanding of the nature of a(0)(0)(980) and f(0)(980)

    No full text
The process e(+)e(-) -> pK(S)(0)(n) over barK(-) + c.c. and its intermediate processes are studied for the first time, using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII at center-of-mass energies of 3.773, 4.008, 4.226, 4.258, 4.358, 4.416, and 4.600 GeV, with a total integrated luminosity of 7.4 fb(-1). The Born cross section of e(+)e(-) -> pK(S)(0)(n) over barK(-) + c.c. is measured at each center-of-mass energy, but no significant resonant structure in the measured cross-section line shape between 3.773 and 4.600 GeV is observed. No evident structure is detected in the pK(-), nK(S)(0), pK(S)(0), nK(+), p (n) over bar, or (KSK-)-K-0 invariant mass distributions except for Lambda(1520). The Born cross sections of e(+)e(-) -> Lambda(1520)(n) over barK(S)(0) + c.c. and e(+)e(-) -> Lambda(1520)(p) over barK(+) + c.c. are measured, and the 90% confidence level upper limits on the Born cross sections of e(+)e(-) -> Lambda(1520)(Lambda) over bar (1520) are determined at the seven center-of-mass energies. There is an evident difference in line shape and magnitude of the measured cross sections between e(+)e(-) -> Lambda(1520)(-> pK(-))(n) over barK(S)(0) and e(+)e(-) -> pK-(Lambda) over bar (1520)(-> (n) over barK(S)(0))

Structural, Optical, Electrical and Electrocatalytic Activity Properties Of Luminescent Organic Carbon Quantum Dots

    No full text
Bolat, Atilla (Arel Author), Yıldırım, Osman (Arel Author)Carbon is an essential element in human life and recently becoming technologically prominent due to the emerging field of "Carbononics". We demonstrate organic carbon quantum dots (qdots) containing nitrile bonded (C N bond) d-glucose-like traces in various sizes obtained from wheat flour to be promising for imaging applications and to possess a relaxor ferroelectric property and an enhanced electrocatalytic activity that could reduce the cost of energy devices and simple to scale up for the commercialization. The secondary electron microscopy (SEM) imaging shows that the particle size of carbon qdots can be controlled via the sonication exposure time. Elemental analysis and vibrational spectroscopy results show that carbon qdots are sensitive to N-2 gas in the atmosphere and could weaken its "carbogenic" property by making a stable C N bond at ambient atmosphere. Rietveld analysis and HR-TEM studies demonstrate that the structure of the C qdots was found to fit best with an acentric primitive orthorhombic lattice. The laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) images show enhancement of the light emission when reducing the size and characteristic excitation wavelength-dependent light emission of C qdots. The photoluminescence and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy techniques show surface dominant emission and absorption upon the nitrile bonding

The separation of the UK from the EU in the context of regional and international security

    No full text
#nofulltext#British People expressed their will to leave the EU in the referendum held on June 23, 2016. Britain has set a new foreign policy vision on the claim that, remaining in the Union would weaken the British government in economic and social security terms. From the European point of view, the separation of the third most active country after Germany and France is considered as the beginning of the end. It can also be claimed that the incompatibilities between the economic and foreign policies of member states could not be sustained any longer. From the regional security perspective, Britain will keep contributing to the security of Europe through NATO. However, the idea of a "New American Order" put forward by the new US President Trump that includes cooperation with Russia, will affect UK US relations, since Britain is a refraining country about renewing the organizational structure within NATO. The will of Germany, France and Spain to cooperate with Russia shows that Britain will not find much support in its opposition to Russia. In the new European Order, countries will not share their sovereignty by giving priority to their own national securities in the fight against terrorism. In this article, the separation of the UK from the EU will be analysed in terms of its own national security and the European security. © Peter Lang GmbH Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften Berlin 2018.
