Ontological Wellbeing of University Students: A Cluster-Analysis Approach
Şimşek, Ömer Faruk (Arel Author)This study is focused on the relationship between purpose in life, emotional wellbeing, ontological (life project) wellbeing, and compassionate love. The Purpose in Life subscale of Psychological Well-Being Scale, Emotional Wellbeing Scale, Ontological Wellbeing Scale, and Compassionate Love for Humanity Scale were administered to 287 students who were undergraduate students and graduate students (masters and doctoral). Cluster analysis results indicated profiles of three factors. First profile showed high level of hope and come into action toward low regret and nothingness. High regret and nothingness were experienced toward low level of hope and come into action on the second profile. Moderate ontological wellbeing was exposed on the last profile. MANOVA analyses were used to compare those three profiles and statistically significant difference were found between Emotional Wellbeing, Purpose in Life, and Compassionate Love Scores. Moreover, the results of the study indicated that exposing high level of ontological wellbeing on hope and come into action is related to life goals, emotional wellbeing, and compassionate love
Synthesis of chalcone-imide derivatives and investigation of their anticancer and antimicrobial activities, carbonic anhydrase and acetylcholinesterase enzymes inhibition profiles
Ertürk, Fatih (Arel Author)The new 1-(4-(3-(aryl)acryloyl)phenyl)-1H-pyrrole-2,5-diones (5a-g) were prepared from 4-aminchalcones (3a-g) and screened for biological activities. All compounds (3a-g and 5a-g), except 3d and 3e displayed good cytotoxic activities with IC50 values in the range of 7.06-67.46 mu M. IC50 value of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) was 90.36 mu M. Moreover, most of compounds 5a-g showed high antibacterial activity with 8-20 mm of inhibition zone (19-25mm of Sulbactam-Cefoperazone (SCF)). In addition, they showed good inhibitory action against acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and human carbonic anhydrase I, and II (hCA I and hCA II) isoforms. Also, these compounds demonstrated effective inhibition profiles with Ki values of 426.47-699.58 nM against hCA I, 214.92-532.21 nM against hCA II, and 70.470-229.42nM against AChE. On the other hand, acetazolamide, clinically used drug, showed a Ki value of 977.77 +/- 227.4nM against CA I, and 904.47 +/- 106.3 nM against CA II, respectively. Also, tacrine inhibited AChE showed a Ki value of 446.56 +/- 58.33 nM
Relationship Between Privacy and Facebook Usage of Female Digital Immigrants
Akikol, Rahime (Arel Author)In today's postmodern society, the social structure has really affected individualization, and electronic devices that bring about digital culture have enabled connections between people thorough social networks. Currently, it is seen as a necessity to belong to the electronic social environment. In the social network context, the culture of personal presentation and 'inner self' in public space is not only popular among adolescents and youths, but now includes female digital immigrants who tend to display as much as possible. However, the attitudes of digital immigrants are different because of differences in age as well as cultural and educational backgrounds. To reveal the relationship between Facebook usage and privacy, a semi-structured interview was conducted with eight people obtained through objective snowball sampling. A questionnaire containing 25 questions was prepared using the data from the interviews and distributed to 367 people in different regions of Turkey. The obtained data were analyzed in the SPSS package. The research findings indicate that female digital immigrants share their personal information with a large number of people because of their direct communications through Facebook and thus tend to show their private lives to the public

Forecasting air passenger demand with system dynamics under terrorism threat
Çakır, Volkan (Arel Author)2nd European International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management.IEOM 2018 -- 26 July 2018 through 27 July 2018 --In this study, a simulation model was developed in order to forecast and analyze air passenger demand and to determine when a capacity expansion in Istanbul Atatürk International Airport will be needed using System Dynamics approach. In thorough literature survey it is found that average airfare, runway capacity, average number of flights per day, level of service, births, deaths, immigration to Istanbul, immigrations from Istanbul, population of Istanbul, Gross Domestic Products and Gross Domestic Products growth rate are key factors considered when creating models for air passenger demand. In this paper, we insert terror attacks as a new factor that may affect air transportation demand in Istanbul Atatürk International Airport. Increase in the number of terrorists may increase the number of attacks and may have a very negative effect on the mobility of people who live in Turkey or who want to visit Turkey. There were always terror attacks in Turkey in past too, but after ISIL emerging terror threats became more frequent. So terror became a very important factor which effects air passenger demand in Istanbul Atatürk International Airport in 2014 after terrorist attacks of ISIL. But results in this paper show that although terror might have a negative effect on air transportation demand, other factors for example airfare, population, runway capacity etc. play dominant roles and capacity expansion in Istanbul Atatürk International Airport will be required until 2023. This paper shows that capacity of Istanbul Atatürk International Airport will not be enough for air transportation and a new, bigger airport will be needed. Turkey has already started constructing a new airport in the north of Istanbul in 2014. © IEOM Society International
Spatio-temporal phase synchronizations in very low frequency EEG oscillations: A preliminary study of synchronization, localization and stability
Demirer, Oya (Arel Author) --- 4th Electric Electronics, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineerings' Meeting, EBBT 2018 -- 18 April 2018 through 19 April 2018 --The default-mode connective network (DMN) consists of coherent very-ultra low frequency (VLF) EEG oscillations (0.02-0.2 Hz interval) associated with resting activity and consciousness of the brain. In this study, we aimed to test whether Freeman approach based methods are able to identify in EEG data spatio-temporal phase synchronization patterns resembling the VLF EEG oscillations. We revealed those repetitive phase transitions at frame rates in very low EEG oscillations with amplitude and phase modulations and then analyzed synchronization index of EEG oscillations based on entropy of information flow for bipolar patients. We then analyzed pragmatic information index of resting potentials using Freeman approach. We associated Pragmatic Information Index with thermodynamic properties of the metabolic brain. Our results revealed that the 20-channel scalp EEG analytic phase signals can yield the timing of synchronized brain activity function, so that the future studies in brain computer interfacing can be better understood. VLF-EEG oscillations showed that those phase transitions will lead to timings in higher cognitive phase transitions. © 2018 IEEE
Cross-cultural adaptation of the intuitive eating scale-2: psychometric evaluation in a sample in Turkey
Intuitive eating is the ability to eat in response to physiological hunger and satiety cues rather than to external or emotional cues. The purpose of this research was to adapt the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2; Tylka and Kroon Van Diest 2013) to Turkish in an adult sample. The factor structure of the IES-2 was evaluated in Study 1 (n = 264) with exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and in Study 2 (n = 271) with confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Additionally, the correlations of the IES-2 scores with measures of self-esteem, disordered eating, obsessive thoughts, and body anxiety in social situations were assessed in Study 1 to evaluate the scale’s convergent validity. EFA results supported the four-factor structure of the original scale with the following factors: eating for physical rather than emotional reasons (EPR), unconditional permission to eat (UPE), reliance on hunger and satiety cues (RHSC), and body-food choice congruence (BFCC). Intercorrelations between the IES-2 total scores and other study constructs were in the expected direction, and ranged from medium to large. CFA results yielded acceptable fit values and supported the 4-factor model of the original scale. A second-order CFA showed that UPE had no association with the second-order latent variable, Intuitive Eating. The results suggest that the IES-2 is a valid and reliable measure of intuitive eating for the adult population in Turkey. Furthermore, it is recommended that Turkish IES-2 total scores be computed without the UPE items. The findings and clinical implications are discussed, and suggestions for future research in other cultural contexts are provided. © 2018, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature
