Teorija i praksa rada s mladima: prilog razumijevanju rada s mladima u hrvatskom kontekstu

    No full text

    Demokratski potencijali mladih u Hrvatskoj

    No full text

    No full text

Researching private supplementary tutoring: methodological lessons from diverse cultures

    No full text
Private supplementary tutoring, widely known as shadow education because of the way that it mimics mainstream schooling, has greatly expanded worldwide. It consumes considerable family resources, provides employment for tutors, occupies the time of students, and has a backwash on regular schools. Although such tutoring has become a major industry and a daily activity for students, tutors and families, the research literature has been slow to catch up with the phenomenon. The topic is in some respects difficult to research, precisely because it is shadowy. Contours are indistinct, and the actors may hesitate to share their experiences and perspectives. Presenting methodological lessons from diverse cultures, the book contains chapters from both high-income and low-income settings in Asia, Caribbean, Europe and the Middle East. Sepa-rately and together, the chapters present valuable insights into the design and conduct of re-search. The book will assist both consumers and producers of research. Consumers will become better judges of the strengths, weaknesses and orientations of literature on the theme; and pro-ducers will gain insights for design of instruments, collection of data, and interpretation of findings

    Religion

    No full text
Religion in the modern (post)-industrial societies is still a significant social fact that in many ways connects everyday social, political and economic activities. Area of South-east Europe (SEE), or more precisely countries like Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Serbia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Romania, from the perspective of sciences that are exploring religion/religiosity are heuristically abundant. Source of misconceptions and misunderstandings of the “religious factor” in SEE largely stems from a lack of understanding of the fact that by no means is South-east Europe a homogeneous space. Exploration of these countries constantly refers to a fact that no convergence concerning religion can be observed for all of the mentioned countries, particularly if taken into account the fact that among those countries are those with high level of secularisation, for instance Slovenia, or those with high level of religiosity, for instance Croatia or Romania. Two research goals are set in this paper. The first one refers to the overall religious landscape in SEE countries. In this section the distribution of various elements of personal religiosity, on aggregate level, is presented for the purpose of understanding religious profile of SEE countries. Since religiosity is a multidimensional construct, several measurements of religiosity are chosen: indicator of religious self-assessment , indicator of belonging to a religious community, frequency of attendance at religious services as an indicator of religious practice, indicators of religious beliefs (traditional and alternative), indicator of importance of God in one´s own life, and indicator of religion as a source of comfort and strength. Beside insight into religiosity, religion` s role is explored from the perspective of social expectations. Since religion can be enrolled in various fields in public sphere, for the purpose of the analysis of religion` role in SEE, three main dimensions of public sphere have been operationalized: general social role of religion, socio-cultural role of religion and socio-political role

Sažetci i zaključci empirijskog istraživanja hrvatskih studenata

    Socijalni status hrvatskih studenata

Lokalni identitet i socijalna kohezija u pograničnom području Hrvatskog zagorja

    Get PDF
Ovaj rad analizira mogućnosti i modalitete istraživanja društvenih identiteta i istražuje socijalnu koheziju u pograničnom dijelu Hrvatskog zagorja, s hrvatske strane hrvatsko-slovenske granice. Kombinacijom kvalitativnih i kvantitativnih istraživačkih metoda, u radu će biti argumentirano kako istraživano geografsko područje posjeduje socijalnu koheziju i razinu identiteta koja ga čini pograničnom zajednicom. (IN ENGLISH: The evolution of modern concepts of the state based on territory and borders into postmodern theories centring on the erosion of sovereignty, de- territorialisation and globalization has produced the concept of “borderlands”. The concept refers to border regions between states and their cooperation. In academic literature, the emphasis is often on the spatial concept of borders. Local identities and how they are ranked by the members of those communities in comparison with national identities frequently lead to the production of social structures that differ from those dominant in the society. They can even lead to different economic tendencies and political orientations within that community. This is precisely why borderland communities are specific. In the course of history they have built particular social relations with the states on whose borders they are situated and have created traditions that often no longer coincide with the state’s national perception of itself today. The aim of this article is to set a frame for the investigation of the most prominent elements of local identity, connect them with the question of social cohesion and with the socio-political relations of a specific community in the region of Croatian Zagorje. Taking into account the postmodern shift in the concept of the geopolitical idea of borders into a triangle of relations: space – power – population, the sole way to study this phenomenon in its entire scope is through an interdisciplinary approach. The study analyses the prospects and methods of exploring social identities and investigates social cohesion in the borderland area of Croatian Zagorje from the Croatian side of the Croatian-Slovenian border. By drawing on a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, the article intends to show how social cohesion and various levels of identity characterize the studied geographical area as a borderland community.

Gender stereotypes of personality: universal and accurate?

    No full text
Numerous studies have documented subtle but consistent sex differences in self-reports and observer-ratings of five-factor personality traits, and such effects were found to show well-defined developmental trajectories and remarkable similarity across nations. In contrast, very little is known about perceived gender differences in five-factor traits in spite of their potential implications for gender biases at the interpersonal and societal level. In particular, it is not clear how perceived gender differences in five-factor personality vary across age groups and national contexts and to what extent they accurately reflect assessed sex differences in personality. To address these questions, we analyzed responses from 3,323 individuals across 26 nations (mean age = 22.3 years, 31% male) who were asked to rate the five-factor personality traits of typical men or women in three age groups (adolescent, adult, and older adult) in their respective nations. Raters perceived women as slightly higher in openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness as well as some aspects of extraversion and neuroticism. Perceived gender differences were fairly consistent across nations and target age groups and mapped closely onto assessed sex differences in self- and observer-rated personality. Associations between the average size of perceived gender differences and national variations in sociodemographic characteristics, value systems, or gender equality did not reach statistical significance. Findings contribute to our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of gender stereotypes of personality and suggest that perceptions of actual sex differences may play a more important role than culturally based gender roles and socialization processes

Sustainability on the semi-periphery: an impossible topic in a non-existent place

    Get PDF
The article surveys the material and social developmental constraints in the 21st century, with special emphasis on the development attainment and environmental impact of the countries of European semi-periphery. We survey the common global constraints on development practices, and position a selection of European countries by their development and environmental impact indices. The article provides a common framing for further theoretical and empirical contributions in the edited volume
