Coleus forskohlii is an important ancient root drug of Indian origin, commonly known as gander in indian ayurvedic system of medicine. A lot of research work has been done on Coleus forskohlii regarding various cardiovascular disorders but no work has been done to find out its cardioprotective activity. Wistar albino rats were divided into five main groups having 5 animal each: Group 1 termed as Normal control (NC) received 0.5ml of normal saline throughout experimental period and served as control. Group 2 termed as Isoprenaline group (ISO) received 0.5ml of normal saline for 28 day and received Isoprenaline (85mg/kg, s.c.) on 29th and 30th day at an interval of 24 hours. Group 3 termed as Standard group (STD) received Metoprolol (pure) (10 mg/kg/day, p.o.) for 28 day and received Isoprenaline (85mg/kg, s.c.) on 29th and 30th day at an interval of 24 hours. Group 4 termed as Test group 1 (TG 1) and Group 5 termed as Test group 2 (TG 2) received Coleus forskohlii (50 mg/kg/day, p.o.) (100 mg/kg/day, p.o.) for 28 day and received Isoprenaline (85mg/kg, s.c.) on 29th and 30th day at an interval of 24 hours respectively. The experiment was terminated on 31st day and animal were sacrificed by cervical decapitation after an overnight fast. Blood was collected for estimation of biochemical parameter and heart was dissected out for grading, heart/weight ratio and histopathological examination.the the level of marker enzyme in serum as AST, ALT, LDH, CK, Troponin-I were significantly decreased (P 0.001) in rats pretreated with Coleus forskohlii when compared to that of group which received isoprenaline alone. Further, histopathological examination showed the reduction of necrosis, edema and inflammation following Coleus forskohlii pretreatment. Based on present findings, it is concluded that Coleus forskohliil may be a potential preventive and therapeutic agent against the myocardial necrosis associated ischemic heart disease

With an increased incidence of drug toxicity and resistance to allopathic drugs, plant drug formulations could be an interesting alternative. Some plant drugs and phytochemicals are known to be anti-inflammatory properties, and can be of great significance in treatment of inflammatory disorders. These considerations require the scientific evaluation of the most important and commonly used traditional herbal formulations. A study has been done to find anti-inflammatory activity of Qurs-e-Mafasil Jadeed containing Colchicun luteum, Curcuma longa and gum of Acacia Arabica. In this proposed work 2 % aqueous suspension of qurs/tablet powder in gum acacia was used to determine its anti-inflammatory activity by carrageenin induced oedema test and cotton pellet induced granuloma test. Efficacy of this Unani formulation was compared with standard referent drug, Diclofenac sodium. The obtained results using carrageenin oedema test showed decrease in left hind paw volume significantly after 3 hours of carrageenin injection. In cotton pellet induced granuloma test, animals in all the test and standard drug tested groups, shows reduction in granuloma formation significantly. Thus, our results clearly indicate that this test formulation possesses significant anti-inflammatory activity in both acute and sub-acute phase

A review on recent innovation in osmotically controlled drug delivery system

    Get PDF
In recent years, oral controlled release (CR) system is most acceptable dosage form by the patients. Drugs having short biological half-life and poor water solubility are the suitable candidate for development of CR system. They include dosage forms for oral and transdermal administration as well as injectable and implantable systems. For most of drugs, oral route remains as the most acceptable route of administration. Certain molecules may have low oral bioavailability because of solubility or permeability limitations. Development of an extended release dosage form also requires reasonable absorption throughout the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT). Among the available techniques to improve the bioavailability of these drugs fabrication of osmotic drug delivery system is the most appropriate one. The release of drug(s) from osmotic systems follows zero order. It is mainly governed by various formulation factors such as solubility and osmotic pressure of the core component(s), size of the delivery orifice, and nature of the rate-controlling membrane. The present review highlights an overview of OCDDS. And new technologies, fabrication and recent clinical research in osmotic drug delivery. Further, the challenges of these technologies and its future perspective are also discussed at length

Other issues can also affect the ability of the health systems to deliver including health administration, healthcare financing, the lack of balance of the human resources, inaccessible and poor quality services and the impact of modifications and reform prevalent in other economic areas

Vegetation dynamics between an open patch and a forest edge

    Get PDF
The study was conducted in two adjacent open area (patches and forest edges) resulted from a major blowdown as a laboratory exercises in SFI 223 (Advanced Silviculture). The two areas were utilized to understand the growth dynamics of the resulting vegetation in the plots. Findings of the study reveals that the forest edge and open patch still covered with various big indigenous and exotic tree species, and lianas. Open patch has more regenerants than forest edge. The comparatively higher difference of number of regenerants in open patch particularly might be due to the fact that Forest Edge have been fully covered with vines and other woody climbers that suppressed the growth of regenerants. For basal area, still open patch has higher B.A of 23.26cm2.Minimal growth was observed in the forest edge site for the 3 weeks measuring interval. This might caused to the relatively short interval of data collection aside from the dry season occurring on the month of data collection and other site factors such as sunlight competition from cover vegetations, nutrient competition from shrubs, lianas, and grasses. In the open patch, the highest growth increment of 21.473 cc is due to the significant growth increment and absolutely higher abundance of regenerants present and low mortality rate Another possible reason is that, the site is located at SE aspects were sun can constantly penetrate to the forest floor mat drives energy for the growth of the regenerates present

    Oral Strip Technology: A review

    Get PDF
Over the recent past, many of the research groups are focusing their research on this technology. Amongst Oral drug delivery system Oral Strip Technology (OST) is gaining much attention. The advantages of OST are the administration to pediatric and geriatric patient population where the difficulty of swallowing larger oral dosage forms is eliminated. This technology has been used for local action, rapid release products and for buccoadhesive systems that are retained in the oral cavity to release drug in controlled fashion. OST offers an alternate platform for molecules that undergo first pass metabolism and for delivery of peptides. An ideal OST should have the following properties: high stability, transportability, ease of handling and administration, no special packaging material and/or processing requirements, no water necessary for application, and a pleasant taste. All these requirement are fulfilled by the oral films. The OST is a good tool for product life cycle management for increasing the patent life of existing molecules or products. Compared to some of the complicated and expensive process (like lyophilization) used to manufacture ODTs(Orally Disintegrating Tablets), the OST is relatively easy to fabricate, thus reducing the overall cost of the therapy. One of the reasons is that the buccal mucosa is less permeable and is thus not able to elicit a rapid onset of absorption and hence better suited for formulations that are intended for sustained release action. Further, the buccal mucosa being relatively immobile mucosa and readily accessible, it makes it more advantageous for retentive systems used for oral trans mucosal drug delivery. The primary disadvantage associated with buccal delivery route is the low flux that in turn results in low drug bioavailability. To overcome this hurdle, various buccal penetration enhancers have been studied which improve the absorption pattern of the molecules. The article shows OST encompassing materials used in OST, method of preparation, evaluation, applications, commercial technologies and future Business prospects of this technology
