Perceived Stress among Undergraduate Medical Students and its Determinants: A Cross-Sectional Study in a Teaching Hospital in West Bengal
Stress among medical students is a growing concern worldwide. The objectives were to assess the perceived stress, its sources and its pattern among undergraduate medical students and to find out determinants of stress among them. This cross sectional descriptive study was conducted among 225 undergraduate medical students of three academic years of Bankura Sammilani medical college during March-June 2015.Data were collected using a pretested, semistructured, anonymous, self-administered questionnaire which consisted of Perceived Stress Scale -10 for assessment of stress . Data were analysed using SPSS version 20.0. Binary Logistic Regression (BLR) model was adopted to find determinants of stress. Proportion of stressed students was 38.2% and mean stress score was 18.41(SD±6.22). Female students were more stressed than male students. About 80% of students perceived ‘vast syllabus’ and ‘lack of attention and time from teacher’ as stressors. Around 50% of students reported ‘Worry about future’, ‘Own expectation of becoming doctor’, ‘Inadequate quantity and quality of food in hostel’ and ‘Lack of recreation’ as stressors. ‘Disturbed in-campus political environment’ was perceived as a source of stress by 42.2% students. In BLR model, only five stressors, ‘Relationship problem with partner/love affair’, ‘Quarrel/maladjustment with friends’, ‘Living away from home’, ‘Competitive environment’, ‘Lack of attention and time from teachers’ were found statistically significant. Most of the stressors were related to academic and psychological domains. Regular review and restructuring of medical curriculum, implementing in-campus health promotional measures for students to cope with stress are needed to address the issue

Synthesis, Spectral Studies and Antimicrobial Activity of imidazo[2,1-b][1,3,4]thiadiazole derivatives
Thiadiazole is a heterocyclic compound containg both two nitrogen atom and one sulfur atom as a part of the aromatic five-membered ring. The imidazo [2,1-b]-1,3,4-thiadiazole ring system is the core skeleton of well known immunomodulator levamisole. The synthesis and antimicrobial activity of nine 6-Phenyl-2- substituted imidazo [2,1-b]-1,3,4-thiadiazole derivatives were reported against Gram +ve bacteria Bacillius subtilis (MTCC 121), Staphyloccus aureus (MTCC 87), Gram –ve bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC 424), Escherichia coli (MTCC 40), and fungal strains Candida albicans (MTCC 183), Fusarium solani (MTCC 2935), Fusarium oxyporium (MTCC 2840). Ciprofloxacin and Fluconazole were used as standard drug for antibacterial and antifungal activity respectively. The synthesized compound (6) and (5b) had moderate antibacterial activity especially with Gram negative Escherichia coli (MTCC 40) where (5a) and (5f) had good antibacterial activity. The structures of the synthesized compounds were established by IR, NMR and Mass spectral studies

Development of Anti-diabetic Niosomes Formulation Containing Metformin and Gliclazide
Metformin/Gliclazide niosomes were formulated with span 60 by ether injection method. Three batches MG1-MG3 were prepared in order to study influence of drug polymer ratio on the niosomes formation and in vitro drug release. The formulated niosomes were characterized by drug entrapment, vesicle size determination, and in vitro drug release. Optimized concentration of span 60 and cholesterol was found to be 1:1. In the in-vitro study, niosomes formulation of MG1 showed high percentage of drug release, 40.18 to 45.75% for about 8 hrs. This indicated that this batch of niosomes formulation exhibit sustained drug release pattern as the niosomes act as reservoir system for continuous delivery of drug. The quantity of Metformin/Gliclazide present in the niosomes and the release medium were estimated by a validated HPLC method. The formulated niosomes had acceptable physicochemical characters and released the drug over 6-8 h. The data obtained from in vitro release studies were fitted with various kinetic models and was found to follow Higuchi kinetics
Syzygium aromaticum L. (Clove): A vital herbal drug used in periodontal disease
Cloves are widely used in dental care, and are effective against a large number of bacteria. The main component of clove oil is eugenol, with β-caryophyllene and eugenyl acetate. The review of published results reveals a great opportunity to treat periodontal disease. The purpose of this study is to compare the bud, leaf and stem essential oil compositions from S. aromaticum and then to evaluate the correlation of the results with anatomic and geographical origins of the essential oil. Many commercial essential oils isolated from bud, leaf and stem were used in this work. The oils were analyzed by GC and then constituents were identified from the whole. The major constituent in oils was eugenol, with increasing percentages from bud (72.08 - 82.36%) to leaf (75.04 - 83.58%) and stem (87.52 - 96.65%). In the clove bud essential oil eugenyl acetate is the second major component (8.6 - 21.3%) while detected in considerably lower amount in the leaf (0 - 1.45%) and stem (0.07 - 2.53%). In leaf essential oil, the second main compounds were β-caryophyllene (11.65 - 19.53%) and α-humulene (1.38 - 2.17%), less represented in bud essential oils (2.76 - 8.64% and 0.34 - 1.04% respectively) and in stem essential oils (1.66 - 9.7% and 0.22 - 1.31% respectively). For each plant material, variation in the percentage of the main constituents was observed according to the sample geographic origin
