The knowledge and modeling of lactation curves make it possible to identify factors that help explain environmental and genetic variations that allow the implementation of a selection program. This work aimed to evaluate different models for milk production, fat, and protein curves in Holstein cattle in Mexico and some factors that affect them. The information used was from 125,982 lactations belonging to 68,804 animals born from 2000 to 2020. The effect of calving number, season of the year, and herd was evaluated. R’s Lactcurves package was employed to fit the 38 models included in the package, of which the best four (Wood, Wilmink, Ali & Schaeffer, and modified Pollot) were chosen and then used to model the individual curves through a nonlinear regression model. The parameters calculated for each model were statistically different among the number of lactations (P<0.05), as well as the number of calving, calving season, and herd (P<0.01). The modeled curves have similar shapes to those reported in other studies, except those obtained for protein in the third and fourth or more calvings with the modified Pollot model. The equation proposed by Wilmink was the one that presented the best fit for the study population according to the different evaluation criteria. Using the model that best suits the data will give a closer predictions to reality, and it can be applied to different areas, such as genetic improvement.
Concentrate supplementation can affect multiple parameters in grazing dairy systems. In mixed pastures (Medicago sativa L. and Dactylis glomerata L.) grazed by New Zealand Holstein cows, a study was done of the effects of concentrate supplementation timing on individual production, stocking rate and milk production per hectare. Two experiments were done, one in winter and another in spring-summer. Experimental design was 3x3 crossover with treatments defined by concentrate (5.0 kg DM cow-1 d-1) supplement administration times: after morning milking (AM), after afternoon milking (PM), and equally divided between both milkings (AM-PM). The experimental units were batches of six (winter) or five cows (spring-summer), which received the treatments, and their respective grazing areas. The rotational grazing management criterion was 8 cm residual forage height in all treatments, which allowed estimation of the effects of the treatments on stocking rate. Stocking rate did not differ (P>0.05) between treatments. Milk production per cow in the AM treatments was an average of 10.2 % higher than the other two treatments, both in winter (8.6 %, P=0.0002) and spring-summer (11.7 %, P<0.0001). The increase in milk production per hectare (9 %) was due to individual response and not to differences in stocking rate. Use of a uniform residual forage height was a simple way of estimating the response in stocking rate and thus milk production per hectare.
The management of irrigated elephant grass intercropped with legumes in the semi-arid region
The present study aimed to evaluate the production and chemical composition of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum syn. Cenchrus purpureus cv. Mott) intercropped with Cajanus cajan (Mandarim and Fava Larga) and Stylosanthes guianensis (Bela) compared to its cultivation in monoculture under irrigated management in the semi-arid region. The experiment was conducted at the Campus of Agricultural Sciences of the Federal University of the São Francisco Valley, Petrolina, Brazil. The experiment consisted of the following treatments: elephant grass intercropped with each legume and two monoculture types, one with nitrogen fertilization (200 kg ha-1) and the other without. The legumes helped to improve the quality of the forage canopy, with high levels of crude protein. Nitrogen fertilization increased the mass of forage produced by elephant grass. The cumulative analysis of all the cuts showed that the intercropping between elephant grass and the Bela cultivar achieved the highest yield, with 13.49 Mg ha-1, mainly due to the increase in the population of the Bela, which proved to be superior to the other legumes over the cuts. Based on the results, the intercropping of elephant grass with the Bela cultivar is recommended as the most effective strategy for maximizing forage production in the semi-arid region
This work aimed to estimate the variance components and genetic correlations for milk yield (MiY), mean flow rate (MnF), maximum flow rate (MxF), and electrical conductivity (EC) of milk, in a robotic milking system. IT was analyzed a total of 137 lactations from 110 primiparous and multiparous Holstein cows, with 42,009 observations, from 2018 to 2020 in a dairy herd in the state of Querétaro. Genetic evaluation was performed using a mixed regression animal model. To estimate heritability (h2), the restricted maximum likelihood algorithm was used to calculate the variance components, the BLUE estimator and the BLIP predictor, for each of the variables subject to the research. The estimated h2 for MiY (0.62) was the highest of those calculated, and h2 was also estimated for MnF (0.44), MxF (0.33), and EC (0.28); it is considered that one of the aspects that influenced the values was the variability of each daily observation. Genetic correlations for MiY were negative for MnF (-0.6117) and MxF (-0.7666); in contrast, for the trait of EC (-0.1669), the correlation was low. The estimated genetic correlations for MxF were positive for MnF (0.7422) and EC (0.5351); finally, a positive genetic correlation was estimated for MnF and EC (0.3546). The results presented allow to understand the relationships between flow rate, conductivity, and yield, and they indicate the importance of these characteristics for a genetic selection program.
The objective was to evaluate the effect of various castration protocols through a meta-analysis of indicators of daily feed intake, feed conversion, daily weight gain, slaughter weight, hot carcass weight, and carcass yield. 179 publications from three electronic sources (Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science) were reviewed over a 24-year period, out of which the 26 studies that met the inclusion criteria were selected. The effect was analyzed with six comparisons: C1=surgical castration vs whole; C2=standard immunocastration vs whole; C3= standard immunocastration vs surgical castration; C4= alternative immunocastration vs whole; C5= alternative immunocastration vs surgical castration, and C6= alternative immunocastration vs standard immunocastration. Averages were estimated for feed intake (kg) (0.23, 0.23, -0.05, 0.32, 0.11, -0.09), feed conversion (kg:kg) (0.27, 0.05, -0.16, 0.11, 0.11, 0.11, -0.19), daily weight gain (g) (-9. 54, 39.08, 40.70, 107.63, -53.0, 69.14), carcass weight (kg) (-9.54, 39.08, 40.70, 107.63, -53.0, 69.14), and hot carcass weight (kg) (1.23, 0.85, 0.46, 1.03, 1.02, -0.42) respectively. The indicators of feed consumption, feed conversion, daily weight gain, slaughter weight, and hot carcass weight proved different (P<0.05); only the carcass yield variable exhibited no difference (P>0.05). The conclusion is that immunocastration improves performance in production and carcass indicators; surgical castration improves carcass yield; whole pigs have better feed conversion, and standard and alternative immunocastration differ in their response in terms of production and carcass measurement indicators.
Several factors can modify productivity in sheep flocks; one of them is gastrointestinal (GI) parasitosis by nematodes, which can cause weight loss, growth retardation, and, in extreme situations, death. Parasite infections involve the immune system for resistance or susceptibility; therefore, strategies are currently being sought that will currently be efficient in the long term to reduce this affectation. One of these strategies is precision livestock breeding, which consists in the identification and selection of genetically resistant animals, using molecular markers. The objective of this review is to gather novel information on quantitative traits (IQT) and genome-wide association studies (GWAS), which confirm the relevance of certain regions or genes in resistance to ovine gastrointestinal parasitosis. Likewise, the potential relevance of new regions was analyzed to perform finer mappings and find sets of polymorphisms that may allow a more efficient selection, while also considering the particular conditions of the sheep herds.
The objective was to identify, through in silico analysis, the genes to which miR-146a, miR-146b, and miR-155 bind and to analyze the metabolic pathways in which they participate during tuberculosis infection. For the analysis, it was used: miRBase, UniProtKB, TargetScan Human, miRDB, and miRTarBase. miR-146a interacts with or binds to genes important in cell adhesion and the process of phagocytosis (CLDN16 and ATP6V1C2, respectively) (P< 0.05); this interaction could have important implications in the pathogenesis of tuberculosis or related diseases. The results of this work suggest that the activation of specific molecular mechanisms in response to tuberculosis is regulated by miR-146a, miR-146b, and miR-155. The genes with which miR-146a and miR-155 interact or bind are involved in the immune response and cellular processes essential during tuberculosis infection.
This work aimed to adapt a methodological tool capable of improving the way to obtain the Innovation Adoption Index in the Puebla beekeeping system. A questionnaire was designed and applied to a sample of 62 beekeepers, from which information was obtained on the use of management, genetics, food, and health innovations, from which 32 original variables and seven innovation categories were defined. The Innovation Adoption Index (InAI) was redesigned and adapted using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), which made it easier to identify social aspects of beekeepers and innovations that contribute to improving honey productivity. The results show that the innovations that contribute the most to production are those contained in the categories of apiary location and health. On the other hand, the InAIalt evaluation proved to be a pertinent alternative for the explanation of the behavior of the yield per hive in addition to showing the specific contribution percentages on the innovations assessed, which can be used to calculate estimates that are more precise and consistent with the expected yields of the region.
The objective was to know the population structure of Holstein animals in the family dairy system, to identify possible origins of the genetic material, to know the degree of inbreeding and to identify possible traces of selection in the genome, which allow glimpses of the traits that have been improved over the years. The study included 270 animals genotyped with the GGP-50K® chip. After genotype quality control, 43,548 autosomal SNPs were included. To know the population structure, analyses of mixtures and principal components (PCs) were performed. To know genomic inbreeding and detect traces of selection, information on runs of homozygosity (ROH) was used. Mixture analysis was performed with the Admixture software, and PC, ROH and inbreeding analyses were performed with SVS-v7.6.8. Mixture analysis showed evidence of six components, all linked to Holstein bulls families with different country of origin. The PCs did not show stratification of the population by herd. The mean inbreeding coefficient was 0.59 ± 0.53 %. In the regions of the genome with ROHs most frequent in the population (≥20 animals), numerous associations, QTLs and genes related to milk production and composition, fertility parameters, susceptibility to diseases, body conformation, feed efficiency and some characteristics of carcass composition have been reported. The results reflect the existence of a wide genetic diversity in this population and the possibility of carrying out genetic improvement work through selection without affecting inbreeding levels.
Faced with the challenges posed by the need for fertilizers to maintain agricultural production, a biological process of atmospheric nitrogen fixation occurs naturally, which is carried out by a group of symbiotic bacteria that form a very close association with plants of the legume group, among which is the sweet clover (Melilotus spp.). From an ecological point of view, this plant has an essential function due to its good ability to associate with native nitrogen-fixing bacteria of the genus Sinorhizobium. A fundamental aspect is that this plant species can grow normally in alkaline soils, which doubles its importance since, on the one hand, it fixes nitrogen, and on the other hand, it can be incorporated as green manure. With this, the physicochemical properties of the soil are improved, and the levels of organic matter, which is in extremely poor condition in arid zone areas, are increased. Additionally, this species can withstand low temperatures and grow satisfactorily in winter. This paper presents a synthesis of the genus Melilotus and its symbiont Sinorhizobium meliloti and its importance as a potential natural soil improver.
