Carcass quality traits and the Longissimus thoracis (LT) and semitendinosus (ST) muscles, aged for 2 or 14 d, from sixty castrated (CM) and non-castrated (NCM) Brangus males, slaughtered at 16 (M16) or 20 (M20) mo of age (391 and 434 kg live weight; 3.81 and 4.25 mm backfat thickness respectively), were evaluated. The carcasses of castrated and younger animals weighed less than those of non-castrated and older ones (P<0.001). Castration produced more subcutaneous fat and lower rib eye areas (P<0.05). Temperature and pH decline was faster in younger animals, and final pH was lower in castrated (P< 0.05). While the Warner Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF) of LT was 9 % lower in castrated, and 7 % higher in younger animals (P<0.05); it decreased with a longer aging period (P<0.001). The WBSF of LT was positively associated with total collagen content (r= 0.54; P<0.01) and negatively with myofibrillary fragmentation index (r= -0.39; P<0.05). The WBSF of ST was not affected by animal castration or slaughter age (P>0.05), but decreased with a longer aging period (P<0.001), and was positively associated with total collagen content (r= 0.61; P<0.05). Both muscles from castrated slaughtered at younger ages had the higher L* values. It is concluded that castration and age at slaughter on Brangus males produced differences on WBSF values only on LT muscle where collagen is not the main determinant of shear force

The use of chemical inputs has led to the loss of microbial diversity involved in the N cycle, such as diazotrophic bacteria, which are inhibited by saturation of the receptors responsible for activating nitrogenase. Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in forage grasses can be used as an ecosystem service. The aim of this review was to analyze the contribution of forage grasses to BNF and their response to inoculation of non-symbiotic diazotrophs in order to find study opportunities. The analysis of the information was carried out using the prisma methodology of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. It should be noted that the main forage species that contribute to BNF are Brachiaria sp. and Pennisetum sp. The inoculation of Azospirillum sp. has generated a growth-promoting effect in grasses, but the response of the inoculated forage depends mainly on the synergy between plant and bacteria, showing neutral, antagonistic, and positive effects.

The present research evaluated the productive response, carcass traits, and meat quality of sheep fed with increasing levels of crushed dry fruits of Acacia farnesiana (CDFAf). Thirty-two sheep (20 ± 2.5 kg and age 70 ± 15 d) were used. Four levels of CDFAf (T0=0.0, T1=1.5, T2=3.0, and T3=4.5 %) were evaluated. The stages of growing (21 d) and finishing (49 d) were assessed. Initial and final live weight (ILW and FLW), dry matter intake (DMI), daily and total weight gain (DWG and TWG), and feed efficiency (FE) were measured. On d 70, the animals were slaughtered to determine carcass traits (CaT), carcass morphometry (CaM), primal cut weight (PrCW), viscera weights (ViW), and meat quality parameters (MeQ). The addition of CDFAf did not affect the DMI; it positively affected DWG and TWG in the growing stage (P<0.05). No differences (P>0.05) were found in the productive variables during the finishing stage. The PrCWs differed (P<0.05), with T1 and T3 registering the highest weights in the loin and neck, respectively. The MeQ shows significant differences in the shear force and water retention capacity at 24 and 72 h. Better tenderness in the meat was observed in T1, and a greater loss of water and greater shear force was observed in T3. It is concluded that CDFAf improves weight gain and yield of primal cuts.

The effect of spent coffee grounds (SCG) aqueous extract and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) on color deterioration, lipid oxidation, and antioxidant status of uncooked pork patties during refrigerated storage (4 °C/9 days, under dark) was investigated. Polyphenols content and antiradical activity of SCG extract were evaluated. Pork patties were evaluated for pH, color parameters and lipid oxidation (LOX), as well as total antioxidant activity of meat. Results showed that SCG extract is an important source of polyphenols and exerts antioxidant activity. Their inclusion in meat samples mitigated undesirable changes in pH, color, and LOX values and increased the antioxidant stability during storage (P<0.05). In conclusion, using SCG extract as a natural antioxidant can improve raw pork patties' quality and shelf life

The objective was to determine the prevalence of serum antibodies (PSA) in response to vaccination against infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) and bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) viruses in dairy cows under subtropical conditions. A commercial polyvalent vaccine with inactivated BVD virus and modified active viruses of IBR, parainfluenza 3 and bovine respiratory syndrome was used. Two groups were formed: vaccinated (VEG) and unvaccinated (UEG) experimental group, which were homogeneous in PSA against IBR and BVD before vaccination. VEG was immunized on d 0 and d 30 after the first vaccination (booster vaccine). To detect antibodies, serum samples were collected 30 d after the first and second vaccinations. Serum antibodies against IBR and BVD were determined by the ELISA test. The average PSA against IBR and BVD before vaccination was 16 (18 % in VEG vs 14 % in UEG; P>0.05) and 8 % (10 % in VEG vs 6 % in UEG; P>0.05), respectively. The first and second vaccinations against IBR induced the formation of antibodies 30 d after their application; with the first vaccination, PSA in vaccinated cows was 36 percentage units higher (P<0.05) than in unvaccinated cows (58 vs 22 %) and with the booster vaccine, PSA in vaccinated cows was 66 percentage units higher (P<0.05) than in unvaccinated cows (94 vs 28 %). The commercial vaccine did not induce the production of antibodies against BVD with either immunization.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of hesperidin, a flavonoid added to quail diets, on blood serum, enzymes in tissues, intestinal histomorphology and fecal microflora. In the study, first treatment [(control) (0g hesperidin/kg feed)], second treatment [(HES1) (1 g hesperidin/kg feed)], third treatment [(HES2) (2 g hesperidin/kg feed)] was added to with the basal diet through 35 d. The study was carried out with 3 main groups, 20 quails with 5 sub-repeats in each group and a total of 300 quails. At the end of the study, blood, liver and thigh muscle tissue and fecal samples were taken. Alanine transaminase (ALT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) decreased in the HES1 group but increased in the HES2 group compared to the control group (P<0.05). Aspartate transaminase (AST) increased in the HES1 group compared to the control group and decreased in the HES2 group (P<0.05). Amylase, on the other hand, showed a regular increase in HES1 and HES2 groups to which hesperidin was added to the control group in hesperidin added groups (P<0.05). The tissue antioxidant GSH, CAT and SOD enzyme parameters showed a significant increase in the hesperidin added groups compared to the control group, and this increase was found to be significant compared to the control group (P<0.05). In intestinal histomorphology, in hesperidin treatment groups increased the height of villus in the cecum tissue; in colon tissue, it was determined that hesperidin added groups increased villus height but decreased crypt depth (P<0.05). Consequently, diets hesperidin with treatments positively is thought to affect the lipid, thigh, liver and serum antioxidant enzyme levels, intestinal histomorphology and fecal microflora in quail

The objective was to evaluate the nematocidal effect of four hydroalcoholic extracts (HAE) of Brosimum alicastrum (HAE-Ba), Guazuma ulmifolia (HAE-Gu), Erythrina americana (HAE-Ea) and Leucaena leucocephala (HAE-Ll) against Haemonchus contortus. The tests of egg hatching inhibition (EHI) and larval (infective larvae) mortality were used. The treatments were HAEs at concentrations of 6.25-50 mg/mL for EHI and 25-100 mg/mL for larval mortality, ivermectin (5 mg/mL, positive control) and distilled water (negative control). Data were analyzed using an ANOVA and treatments with a concentration-dependent effect were subjected to a regression analysis to determine lethal concentrations (LC50 and LC90). In addition, a phytochemical analysis was performed on the extracts to identify the presence of the main secondary metabolites. The best ovicidal and larvicidal activity was observed in HAE-Gu with 96.78 % EHI at 6.25 mg/mL and 57.2 % larval mortality at 75 mg/mL. Followed by HAE-Ba showing 90 % EHI at 6.25 mg/mL and 58.0 % larval mortality at 75 mg/mL. The LC50 and LC90 of HAE-Gu on EHI were 2.7 and 4.4 mg/mL, respectively. While the LCs of this same extract on larvae were LC50= 64 and LC90= 125 mg/mL. The phytochemical analysis indicates that all extracts contain tannins, coumarins, flavonoids and terpenes. The fodder species G. ulmifolia and E. americana could be candidate plants for the control of H. contortus.

Nutritional quality in grain by-products such as corn stover can be improved with processes such as steam sterilization and fungus inoculation. The stover of two native corn cultivars and one commercial hybrid cultivar were steam sterilized or inoculated with mycelium of the white-rot fungus Ganoderma lucidum. The experimental design was completely random with a 3x4 factorial arrangement, one additional treatment and four replicates. The four treatments were untreated stover, sterilization and immediate drying, sterilization and drying after 15 d, and colonization with G. lucidum for 15 d; pure mycelia were also analyzed to establish values for the fungus. Five variables were measured: in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), lignin and crude protein (CP). The three cultivars differed (P<0.0001) in terms of digestibility, with cultivar A having the highest values. Digestibility was lowest (P<0.05) in the G. lucidem-colonized stovers (P<0.05), intermediate in the untreated stovers and highest in the sterilized stovers. Contents of NDF, ADF, lignin, and CP differed (P<0.0001) between the cultivars and treatments (P<0.0001). Cultivar A had less NDF than the other cultivars. The untreated stovers had less NDF than the sterilized and G. lucidem-colonized stovers. For both ADF and lignin, the untreated stovers had the lowest values, the sterilized stovers had intermediate values and the colonized stovers had the highest. Crude protein (CP) differed between the cultivars (P<0.0001), and the colonized stovers had the highest values (P<0.05).

Supplementation emerges as a simple strategy to improve animal productivity in systems that adopt deferred grass pasture as the basic diet. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of levels of supplementation of mesquite pod meal on intake, digestibility of nutrients, and body weight (BW) gain of goats in grazing deferred. Thirty-five (35) goat males (24.0 ± 2.9 kg BW) were distributed in a completely randomized design, with five treatments and seven replications. Treatments constituted a supplement control (0.05% BW of protein-mineral salt) and increasing levels at 0.5; 1.0; 1.5, and 2.0% BW of supplementation with mesquite pod meal. Dry matter intake and nutrients of the forage and total diet increased linearly (P<0.0001) as a function of the levels of the supplement. A quadratic effect was observed (P<0.0001) for the digestibility variables, except for ethereal extract and non-fiber carbohydrates, which presented an increasing linear effect (P<0.0001). Supplementation levels increased linearly on the performance variables (P<0.05). It is recommended the concentrate supplementation at 2.0% BW with mesquite pod meal at 30 % in its composition for promoting the reduction of the productive cycle of goats in deferred Urochloa grass pastures
