المساعي السياسية والإصلاحية للإمام أبي الوليد الباجي: The political and reformist endeavours of Imam Abū al-Walīd al-Bājī

    No full text
After the fall of the Umayyad Caliphate, the Andalusian Islamic state witnessed a political rupture as a result of chaos, rivalries and sectarian conflicts throughout the fifth century AH corresponding to the eleventh century AD. These dangerous security breakdowns led to the disintegration and division of the Islamic Caliphate in Andalusia into a group of independent kingdoms and small emirates which ultimately found themselves on one hand in permanent wars between them, and on the other in skirmishes with the neighbouring Christian forces. This fact contributed to lack of stability and peace of these lands and the establishment of weak governing systems for a long time. This political situation stressed the worsening of their social conditions and their scientific life. Nevertheless, this situation generated a motivating nostalgia and rage in some scholars and jurists such as Imam Abū al-Walīd al-Bājī who is considered one of the key-figures and scholars of Andalusia. He had a prominent role in pushing forward and reviving scientific life by setting various new foundations in order to reform some fields. His writings were directed for educational purposes. Besides, he included the reform of Islamic jurisprudence, which was aimed primarily for jurists and rulers. Furthermore, some of his writings were sermons and ethical moral instructions for commoners. His endeavours led him to enter the political life as he assumed the judicial profession of a judge, that enabled him to be in more touch with the various kings of sects giving him the chance to advise and guide them. His efforts in that end resulted in seeking to reunite the kings of the sects and their princes under the banner of Islam and unite their forces for the defence of Muslim presence in Andalusia against the Christian threat. After the fall of the Umayyad Caliphate, the Andalusian Islamic state witnessed a political rupture as a result of chaos, rivalries and sectarian conflicts throughout the fifth century AH corresponding to the eleventh century AD. Full text link
The Drug Information Book 2017 records 18,440 newly-detected addicts and 7,482 repeat cases of addiction. These figures necessitate the call for a study and contribution to the fortification of preventive measures in the nation. Prevention is the best and most effective method for cost reduction in drug abuse. Poor preventive programmes would elevate the rate of addiction, cause various social issues to rise, and augment the cost of recovery treatments. The study reveals that weak personal spirituality is the root of addiction and has the most devastating consequences. Hence, this study was conducted to collect hadiths that are related to individual spiritual development as a means of preventing drug abuse. The study employs a thematic analysis approach by identifying related hadiths. The study finds that spiritual elements related to life aims, gratitude, independence, and a firm hold on the faith are consequential in the prevention of drug involvement

This article discusses the scenario of ICT use in the teaching of Quranic tahfiz. Tahfiz education in Malaysia has been well established for the past 10 years. The teaching of tahfiz has to evolve alongside the 21st century's educational nature, which advances the use of ICT. This study analyses the readiness of both teachers and students at MITS Selangor to use ICT in the teaching of Quranic memorization. This descriptive study uses a quantitative approach for its primary data. The data were obtained from a set of questionnaire instruments distributed to 279 students and 59 teachers at MITS. The data were then analysed using the SPSS 22.0 software. The findings reveal the readiness of teachers to use ICT in the teaching of tahfiz, with an overall mean of 3.81 and a s.p. of 0.775, which is interpreted to be at a moderately high level. The overall mean for students is 3.33, with a moderately high s.p. of 0.736. While the teachers have a positive perception of the importance of using ICT in the teaching of tahfiz, the use of it is still moderate. Teaching tahfiz based on ICT has to be enhanced as an effective teaching aid through the formation of an environment that encourages needs, interests, and situations. Besides that, it also supports the interests of learners according to trends over time. This is as advocated by the Malaysian Ministry of Education to produce Huffaz who are proficient and possess the potential for wholesome physical and spiritual growth

In addressing the problem of the management of traditional residential areas in general and Oasis residences in particular, it became clear that the success of the assessment of the current reality of these dwellings depends on the identification of defects and their resolution. The rehabilitation plan does not only aim at providing solutions, but rather offers potentialities to stabilize what could be after the implementation of these solutions. What the ancestors left behind is considered a cultural, aesthetic, philosophical, and creative heritage. The scientific and technical effort cannot rightly cancel out the experiences and experiments left behind by the ancestors, because the environment that arrived and was formed through the experiences accumulated by many generations was not formed in vain, but there were laws and customs that govern the urban system in all its details. A vision of this heritage goes beyond nostalgia for the past, to reflect on it with realistic visions. At this stage, the research will aim to determine the functional and social requirements and needs of contemporary residential construction by extrapolating the performance of traditional Oasis housing construction models. In order to achieve sustainability in tourism

The skill of using effective language in negotiations is essential to ensure that the objectives of the negotiation can be achieved, especially in the development of good relations between the two sides. This study focuses on how Prophet Yusuf a.s. galvanized the language in changing social practices, namely the conflict between him and his brothers through the discourse of negotiations. In particular, this study was conducted to describe the dialogue between Prophet Yusuf a.s. and his brothers during the negotiation process through analysis of i) the use of language as the main medium of negotiation; and ii) the relationship of the negotiator's power with the language in the negotiation. This paper uses qualitative approach through analysis of Quranic discourse, Al-Jurjaniy methodology as well as critical discourse analysis, Fairclough (1992;2003). The discourse of the negotiation chosen for the purpose of this analysis is the text of the dialogue between Prophet Yusuf a.s. and his brothers from Surah Yusuf in the three phases of the negotiations, which are the negotiation on the preparation of food supplies, the Bunyamin detention negotiations and the peace negotiation. Based on Fairclough's critical discourse analysis approach, the textual dimensions of this study include modalities, particles and text structure. While the dimensions of discourse practice are limited to the power of speech only. The analysis of the dimensions of social practice is shown through the relationship between the two dimensions. Religious diversity is unique to a society. Every country wants peace and harmony in its society, especially a country that has a society of various religions and races. Harmony is one of the main factors in the progress of a country. However, interfaith societal relations require a solid foundation to guide all levels of society in building harmonious social relations. This study refers to previous studies related to the concept of society, the foundations of interfaith societal relations according to Islam and Christianity, and the factors that contribute to neglecting the foundations of interfaith societal relations. The analysis of this study aims to identify the foundations established in Islam and Christianity for interfaith societal relations by examining the texts from the Quran and the Bible. The basic theme of interfaith societal relations is derived from the findings and explanations in both the Qur'an and the Bible, including getting to know and helping each other, being respectful, and being kind. Further, the foundations of these religious teachings show that each religion plays an essential role in upholding interfaith societal relations. This study is qualitative, and data were obtained through previous studies and texts from the Quran and the Bible. The information and data are analysed to ascertain the validity of the sources. The foundations of interfaith societal relations based on religious texts need to be highlighted for society to understand that Islam and Christianity do not reject interfaith societal relations but draw certain limits and guidelines that need to be followed

Human development encompasses the complete process of forming a knowledgeable, moral, skilled, competitive, and resilient human workforce. Human development has become the main focus and agenda of the country’s leadership, to be realised primarily through the education system undergone by citizens’ children. In this regard, the Ministry of Education Malaysia has reviewed the curriculum for Compulsory Subjects (MPW) in all Higher Education Institutions in the country. Thus, the General Education Subject (MPU) has been introduced based on the branch of philosophy of knowledge, which involves the humanities, pure sciences, and social sciences. However, with many students in a single lecture, the MPU course has its constraints. Some students consider this course a subject that can be studied on their own. As a result, it is impossible to produce future-proof graduates. Therefore, this article aims to explain the current situation of implementing MPU courses in Higher Education Institutions in Malaysia. The paper is based on findings from a thorough literature review on the General Education Subject (MPU) courses. This research has applied the document analysis method by analysing related documents for MPU courses. The data obtained are thematically analysed via ATLAS.ti 8 software. The research findings have discovered four themes of the General Education Subject (MPU) implementation in Malaysia: its implementation, relevancy, impact, and teaching approach. Finally, the literature conclusion could be used as an initial guide for Higher Education Institutions to improve MPU courses’ implementation in producing future-proof graduates

Keistimewaan pendidikan agama Islam dan pandangan pentadbir British terhadap sistem pendidikan di Tanah Melayu: The Privileges of Islamic religious education and British administrator’s views on the education system in Malaya

The majority of British administrators adhered to the philosophy of logical positivism (later known as logical empiricism), an understanding that emphasises the use of the intellect as the main approach to obtaining accurate scientific facts based on meticulous and systematic research methods. This philosophy rejects the proof of a fact from the source of revelation as it is considered not relevant in proving history and has created bigoted and queried views towards the Malay community in Malaya. This article focuses on the analysis of the British administrators’ views on the system of education in Malaya, which includes religious and secular education, and on determining the privileges of Islamic religious education for the Malay community. The methods used were historiography, comparative method, and content analysis. The study found that the British administrators underestimated the contribution of the Islamic education system in Malaya and considered that the failure of Malaya in achieving its high civilization was due to its adherence to Islam, which was considered irrelevant and outdated. Hence, to overcome these weaknesses, internalising secularism into the thinking of the Malays in Malaya through the Western education system was seen as an appropriate step

This study's data consists of Modern Standard Arabic online news published by the Aswaq (aswaqpress.com) news portal between January and July 2021. Aswaq provides Arabic news and information on Malaysia to the Arab world. Hence, the information provided by the portal is vital in portraying Malaysia to Arab audiences, particularly in framing the way Malaysia deals with the Covid-19. The study employs corpus linguistics analytical tools using the corpus software AntConc 3.5.8 (2019). Then, the quantitative result will be analysed using a qualitative approach based on the textual-oriented Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of Fairclough (1992). It is shown that Aswaq has strategically utilised various verbal processes to report on the words said and articulated around the pandemic. The diversity of verbal processes used indicates different connotations that hint at different strategic approaches to reporting the news. Hence, it may lead to uncovering the outlet stance of the event. Finally, the study will present suggestions for other related studies in the future
