This paper reviews secularisation within Muslim-majority societies, emphasising the main determinants that shape the process and comparing it to the Occident, better known as the West. There are four sections. The first section comparatively analyses secularisation in the Muslim world and the Occident, emphasising the unique characteristics of the Muslim-majority countries where religion is still important despite socio-economic development. The second section elaborates on the determinants of secularisation, which include the role of urbanisation, economic development, education, democracy, science, technology and rentierism. Rentiersim is argued to allow Muslim societies to maintain their devotion to religion, unlike in the Occident.  The final section discusses the persistence of religion in Muslim societies despite the interaction between these determinants and secularism. The conclusion for this paper is that although secularisation is inevitably present in Muslim societies, it does not follow the same trajectory as in the Occident, with religion continuing to play an important role in both the social and individual spheres. Contribution: This paper contributes to a nuanced understanding of secularisation in Muslim-majority societies, emphasising its unique divergence from the Western narrative. Secularisation will continue to diverge, albeit uniquely Muslim, as opposed to the predominantly Christian West. The study aligns with the journal’s focus on contemporary Islamic issues and their global implications.

Islamic education in Indonesia continues to evolve in response to modernization and globalization, particularly with the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum, which emphasizes deep learning and student-centered approaches. One classical work that remains relevant in the context of Islamic education is  Ta‘līm al-Muta‘allim by al-Zarnūjī, which outlines the fundamental principles of seeking knowledge. This study aims to analyze the relevance of al-Zarnūjī's educational concepts in  Ta‘līm al-Muta‘allim in the context of Islamic education in Indonesia and to develop strategies for implementing these values in the Merdeka Curriculum. The research employs qualitative analysis of al-Zarnūjī’s concepts and a literature review of current Islamic education and the Merdeka Curriculum. The results indicate that al-Zarnūjī’s values—including sincere intentions, diligence, effective learning methods, and the teacher-student relationship—remain highly relevant and can strengthen the modern curriculum. Implementing these values in the Merdeka Curriculum requires strategies, such as integration into project-based learning, teacher training, development of teaching materials, and character building through extracurricular activities. Contribution: The research therefore, emphasize the importance of aligning classical Islamic education with modern curricula to develop well-rounded students grounded in moral values. Unlike previous studies, this research offers a practical framework for implementing al-Zarnūjī’s concepts through project-based learning, teacher training, and character development initiatives. The findings underscore the significance of aligning classical Islamic education with contemporary pedagogical approaches to cultivate well-rounded students with strong moral foundations

Sayyid Quṭb’s Exegesis of Hospitality in Prophetic Narratives: Pentafsiran Sayyid Quṭb tentang Hospitaliti dalam Naratif Kenabian

This study examined Sayyid Quṭb’s interpretive approach to the Quranic narratives of hospitality in his seminal tafsīr, Fī Ẓilāl al-Qurʾān (In the Shade of the Quran). Focusing on the stories of Prophet Abraham and his honored guests, and Prophet Lot and his people, the study analyzed how Quṭb situates these episodes within his broader project of tafsīr ijtimāʿī wa ḥarakī (social and movement-oriented exegesis). This study highlighted Quṭb’s hermeneutical methods, including his emphasis on thematic unity within the sūrah, his literary sensitivity to Quranic imagery, and his insistence on linking Quranic guidance to the lived realities of Muslim societies. Through his reading of these narratives, Quṭb derives a set of ethical principles governing hospitality: the obligation to welcome guests warmly, the duty to provide food promptly and generously, the importance of ensuring guests’ comfort and safety, and the moral imperative to uphold their dignity. In Quṭb’s view, these Quranic stories do not only recount historical events but also serve as paradigms for cultivating justice, mercy, and communal solidarity in contemporary Muslim life. By foregrounding hospitality as a Quranic ethical principle, this study argued that Quṭb’s tafsīr underscores the role of Islam in addressing social challenges and fostering human dignity

Adab, in the perspective of Islam, holds a noble position in the eyes of Allah and His Messenger and in the view of all creatures. However, most Muslims take an indifferent attitude towards this matter, treating them as if they are peripheral and distant from the religion. Observing this scenario, the restoration of identity needs to be strengthened by understanding the of the Prophet's (PBUH) teachings through his sayings on manners contained in the works of prominent scholars. This paper analyses the renowned hadith scholar, al-Bukhārī, who wrote a special chapter in Kitāb al-Adab within his work al-Jāmi‘ al-Ṣaḥīḥ. More specifically, al-Bukhārī authored another separate book presenting hadiths on manners titled al-Adab al-Mufrad (AM). Hence, this study applies a qualitative method with a content analysis design to elaborate in detail selected hadiths related to the command to do good to parents. The findings show that most of the hadiths in AM are authentic, thābit, and maḥfūẓ. Although there are weak, their number is small and not in the category of very weak. Therefore, it does not tarnish the credibility of the author and the esteemed status of AM in society. Contribution: The paper highlights numerous authentic hadiths emphasise the importance of treating parents with respect and kindness. This is a core value in Islam that has been validated through the al-Bukhārī's works. The paper's exploration of hadiths on parental respect, along with its practical applications, aligns well with the focus on promoting Islamic values and addressing contemporary social challenges

Pendekatan reformasi Jamāl al-Dīn al-Qāsimī (1283-1332 H.) terhadap sosioagama umat Islam di Syria: Jamāl al-Dīn al-Qāsimī’s reform approach to the socioreligious affairs of Muslims in Syria

The division of Islam stemming from the weakness of the ‘Uthmāniyya dynasty had a major impact on the socioreligious situation of Muslims in Syria. This study was carried out to study the approach used by Jamāl al-Dīn al-Qāsimī to address this issue. This is a qualitative study with data obtained from authoritative documents such as books, theses, newspapers, and magazines. Jamāl al-Dīn al-Qāsimī placed a strong emphasis on the use of the Quran and Sunnah as the main sources of law. He called for ijtihad and rejected the practice of taqlīd, urging Muslims to use their intellect to static thinking. In addition, he expanded traditional education with modern knowledge. This research reveals that Jamāl al-Dīn al-Qāsimī’s approach to Syria’s socio-religious context was not merely theoretical, but deeply practical, offering a model for broader Islamic reform. Future researchers should be able to conduct further studies related to these approaches. This study reveals various techniques to address the problem of the backwardness of the Islamic community, especially in challenging times. Contribution: This study elicits a critical understanding of the thinking and role of Islamic reformists in saving Muslims. The proposed approaches will also help to build a harmonious, critical-thinking, and competitive Islamic society

Sumbangan Penulis Tafsir Mini Surah al-Fātiḥah dalam Pendidikan Islam Awal Kanak-Kanak: The Contribution of Tafsir Mini Surah al-Fatihah Authors to Early Islamic Education for Children

This study examined the interpretive and formative approach of Tafsir Mini Surah al-Fatihah, published by Telaga Biru, as a model of children’s tafsīr in early Islamic education. Employing a qualitative interpretive design through document analysis and triangulated interviews, five core features were identified: (i) use of the Quran and hadith as primary references, (ii) enrichment of understanding through Qaṣaṣ al-Anbiyāʾ (prophetic narratives), (iii) use of the qiṣṣah (storytelling) genre, (iv) focus on moral and spiritual values, and (v) exclusion of superstition and myth. These features collectively demonstrate the integration of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah theology with a child-centred formative approach in conveying Quranic meanings. The findings also highlighted challenges in simplification and parental dependency, emphasising the need for reflective parental guides to support accurate theological comprehension. Contribution: This study highlights the significant contribution of Tafsir Mini Surah al-Fatihah in advancing children-oriented Quranic interpretation within the Malaysian context. While a similar initiative was undertaken in Indonesia by Afif Muhammad (2002), this work represents a crucial methodological development that contextualises children’s tafsīr within Malaysia’s socio-cultural and educational landscape. This study contributes to the growing field of Quranic studies that integrates classical tafsīr with contemporary approaches to faith formation and early Islamic education, enriching discourse on Quranic transmission in Southeast Asia
