Šiuolaikinės Lietuvos vartotojo profilis
The paper analyzes the data of survey which was carried out in Novermber-December 2001. The pattern of consumer society is applied for the analysis of the data. There are two general features of consumer society: it is whealthy and it has a set of characteristic values. The data shows that society in Lithuania has several characteristic features which differ it from typical wealthy western consumer society. At the same time it has some features which are related with wealthy society. First of all, the Lithuanian society is not the typical wealthy society. And the possibilities of population to consume are low. At the same time a part of society has values which are characteristic to the middle-class society: the need of self-expression and ecological attitudes.
This article analyzes the images of sexual minorities in the Lithuanian press during the period of January, 2000 - June, 2001. Arguing that the mass media plays a critical role in the construction of representations of the sexual minorities, the author attempts to determine whether Lithuanian press makes the issues of homosexuality and homosexual people a part of public agenda. The analysis demonstrates that sexual minorities remain a difficult topic and an extremelly sensitive issue in Lithuania. Homosexuality is frequently described as a scandal, and homosexuals are still portrayed as an underworld unfamiliar to mass population.
At the end of the article, the author concludes that to correct the prejudices and misrepresentations offered by the mainstream Lithuanian press, one needs to develop alternative interpretations of homosexuality. However, to move towards non-phobic representations of lesbians and gays, it is necessary to struggle for legitimate, affirming, non-phobic inclusion of lesbians and gay men in the public sphere.
In the process of European integration and seeking for the membership inside the European Union, the problem of value change remains very significant if we are to understand processes of change not only in the economy, politics, and society in general, but in the minds, outlooks and social behaviour of the people as well. The purpose of this paper is to identify similarities and differences in attitudes, beliefs and value priorities between the three Baltic countries – Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and to suggest historical, economic, social, cultural, etc., aspects of these countries that may account for the differences.Vertybių kaitos problema nėra pakankamai ištirta, ypač Baltijos šalyse ir apskritai pokomunistinėse šalyse. Ši problema tampa dar aktualesnė eurointegracinių procesų bei jų įtakos visuomenės vertybinėms orientacijoms kontekste. Todėl šio straipsnio tikslas – išanalizuoti vertybines orientacijas bei jų kaitą trijose Baltijos šalyse (Lietuvoje, Latvijoje, Estijoje) įvertinant tai nulėmusius politinius, ekonominius, socialinius, kultūrinius aspektus. Tiriant vertybių kaitą remtasi Schwartzo ir Bilsky (1987, 1990) metodologija, Ingleharto (1990,1995, 1997, 2000), De Graaf ir Evans (1996) teorinėmis nuostatomis. Empirinė tyrimo dalis analizuoja apklausos “Baltic Barometer – 2001” duomenis.
Asmens tautinio tapatumo tapsmas. Sociopsichologinės šio proceso interpretacijos
The aim of this article is to analyse important dimension of a personal identity, i.e. the nature of the national identity, its characteristic features and the socio-psychological issues of its’ formation. National identity is a complex and dynamic phenomenon. The article contrasts a number of theoretical approaches - impact of childhood and socialization upon its’ formation, possible shifts throughout the whole life; the “latent” character of national identity which is being publicly manifest only in specific historic circumstances of a person, his (her) family, country, etc. The process whereby a person’s identity is shaped through his (her) identification vis-a-vis Significant Others is addressed in the paper as well. Other dimensions of national identity formation and meanings, e.g. commitment, attachment, needs, “national sentiments”, “affective involvement”, etc. are analysed and contrasted. For the research of national identity in Lithuania, paper argues and concludes, the concept of identity status as elaborated by J.Marcia.
The paper analyses the communicational aspects in drama and discusses the interaction between drama, theatre and society. The expansion of performance theory and theatre semiotics has changed the emphasís of dramatic theory since 1970\u27s toward new concepts of communication in drama. This article gives particular attention to the semiotics ideas of the relationship between drama and mis en scene and investigates the role of the audience in the context of contemporary drama and theatre studies. The traditional model of communication from Aristotle and Plato, was understand as a simple conveyance of information or as the objective transmission of contents from sender to receiver, creating the intersubjective relationship that are the foundation of society. Recent critical practice and investigations by theorists such as Patrice Pavis, Marco De Marinis, Anne Ubersfeld, Kleir Elam has led to the radically different ways of the communicational concepts. The starting point of research into theatrical communication was the French linguist Georges Mounin\u27s (1969) denial of its possibility. Thus the main task of the theatre semioticians was to find a Specific model of theatrical communication. M. De Marinis argued, that the complexity and multiplicity of codes guarantees that a certain degree of comprehension (and communication either) is always achieved in the theatre. Mise en scene P. Pavis defines not as the transformation of drama text into performance, but rather as their confrontation. The process of drama\u27s concretizations series from \u27textual\u27 to \u27receptive\u27 concretization) is always concemed with the social context and cultural conditions surrounding the audience. The changing social context permits infinite number of the same drama texts readings. Mis en scene can be understood as the “social practice”. Thus communication theory with the attitude toward sociology gives more open concept of drama. The task of the audience nowadays is not to look for the “true” meaning in dramatic performance, but to create his own meaning in the process of communication. It means, that the “manipulation power of drama” as the ground for traditional theatrical communication is rejected. The perceptual studies - the “pleasure” of reading and viewing, the deconstruction of meaning - gives new conceptions of communicational and social aspects of drama.Šiame straipsnyje, žvelgiant iš teatro perspektyvos, bandoma nužymėti pagrindines dramos komunikacijos teorijos tendencijas ir jos ryšį su socialiniu kontekstu.
The concept of “power” seems to be one of the basic and most attractive but also one of the most difficult to define in contemporary sociology. In this essay it will be concentrated on quite distinct from traditional perspective notion of power, presented by the theories of Bourdieu’s, Foucault’s and Baudrillard’s, what will give possibility also to follow the emergence of post-modern discourse on power. There are a number of distinctive (or even contradictory) perspectives of power, mostly rooted in the Weber’s and/or Marx’s theories. Among these new theories it is possible to indicate one more radical critique, which puts accent on the more or less invisible (indirect and symbolic) character of power, and thus unites such different theories as Bourdieu’s, Foucault’s and Baudrillard’s.
The main incitement for this approach was the need to look at power from perspective different than the juridical-political theory of sovereign power and an analysis of the state and to consider the material techniques of power that are not compatible with relations of sovereignty. Thus here the main question emerges: how does a social system in which a substantial section of the population is obviously disadvantaged and exploited survive without its rulers having to depend on physical coercion for the maintenance of order?
The social psychological point of view to the family, its formation and development was used as the theoretical background of the paper. The task of the paper was to analyse the attitudes of all the respondence, the women and the men separately towards the family, the conditions of a couple becoming a family and the families functioning under the contemporary social economic circumstances. For the above mentioned purpose serve the data of special research of the couple’s who decided to be married as well as the data of other investigators. The method of investigation: the special questionnaire for the couple’s, who arrived to register the marriage was prepared. Results: the differences towards the attitudes to the joint house-hold between the persons who lived together before the marriage and did not lived together were revealed. It was not proved the opinion about the fact that life together before the marriage helps to prepare for the domestic affairs. The psychological atmosphere of the spouses show a tendency for a social interaction combining the family and the career problems also looking for a joint decisions in a case of the controversy. Conclusions: the different view of the women and the men in assessing the family problems guid to the necessity to change the family police from the patriarchal to the egalitarian.
We can distinguish different approaches to European identity in contemporary Lithuanian and European discourses. Western scholars, such as Jacque Derrida, Jürgen Habermas, Gerard Delanty, Soledad Garcia, Cris Shore and others, stress (and question) the political and economic basis of European identity. This approach is revealed in both normative discussions and actual policies of European identity, and is supported by public opinion surveys, which attest to the mostly pragmatic motivation of citizens of the European Union to identify with “Europeans.” Traditionally, Lithuanian intellectuals tend to consider “Europeanness” more as a cultural, but not a political or economic phenomenon. This Lithuanian attitude is greatly influenced by the tradition of philosophy of culture, which thrived during the interwar period in Lithuania. The philosophers, among which the most important were Antanas Maceina, Stasys Salkauskis and Vytautas Alantas, created their definitions and visions of nation, state and culture. They shaped a whole framework of nationalist thinking and provided later generations with powerful rhetoric, strongly expressed in the Lithuanian debates in the last decade of the twentieth century. Nevertheless, this traditional approach to Lithuanian identity has been modified during the twentieth century. First, the debates about national identity continued abroad, mostly in the U.S., after the Soviet occupation where a liberal approach to national identity took shape. In the 1980s, the secession from the Soviet bloc facilitated the circulation of Western liberal ideas, developed both by Western scholars and Lithuanian emigrant intellectuals. These ideas, though contested by nationalist approaches, became more and more usual in Lithuanian “identity talk.” Additionally, European integration influenced a more pragmatic attitude towards national identification, as well as acknowledgment of its situational character and relativist nature. This shift is well reflected not only in the writings of intellectuals, but also in the public opinion surveys. The cultural grounds of political identity gained a new meaning, yet continued to matter. It would be impossible to provide a thorough analysis of the extensive discussions during the century. Therefore I will concentrate on the debates that took place from the 1980s to the end of the decade. I have chosen this period for several reasons. First, these debates in a way encompass the ideas and problems that were formulated throughout all the previous years. The period is important also, since the entire Lithuanian tradition of both nationalistic thinking and thinking about nation starts being reconsidered, supported or criticized. Yet, paradoxically, the issue of Lithuanian national identity and its relation to other regional identities, and what is most important in my case, to European identity, has not gained proper attention among Lithuanian scholars. Identity studies, though extremely popular in the West, are only at the initial stage in Lithuania. Additionally, studies of the problems related to nationalism, which would stimulate to analyze the relation between national and supra-national identities, are still rare in Lithuanian academic discourse.Speaking about European identity is very complicated, since there is any consensus neither about its content nor functions. Scholars argue about it from very different and often contradictory perspectives. Some of them understand European identity as the factor that strengthens national feelings (Louis Snyder, Jennifer Welsh), others as a real supra-state identity, potential to diminish dangers of nationalisms (Jürgen Habermas, Jacque Derrida). The others see European identity as the utopian aim, created by elites (Cris Shore, Gerard Delanty). While some thinkers call for concrete policies of the promotion of European identity, which consist mostly of ideological revision of history and cultural policies, similar to those of nation states (Simon Mundy), others criticize the policies just because of the ideological dimension and accuse European identity of being manipulative (Antje Wiener, Cris Shore). The arguments try to solve the tension between economic, political and cultural grounds of European identity. All of them see European history as ambivalent, which may both support and undermine European integration. On the one hand, the history of Europe is the history of many nationalisms, of the fight between political and cultural units for the right of self-determination. Obviously, this “history of conflict” hardly could serve as the ideological glue for European integration. On the other hand, the history of Europe is the history of Western civilization that has developed on the basis of Christian religious and antique philosophical traditions, Renaissance’s humanism, and Enlightenment’s rationality. The aspects of a shared ethical system, rational reasoning and cultural heritage are often employed to create the illusion of inherited, long lasting “cultural” or “ethical” Europe. Many of the EU’s programs stimulate this re-invention of a cultural European tradition, in Eric Hobsbawm terms, while emphasizing the presence of a common cultural heritage in all European countries. Nevertheless, many countries may still interpret that “common European heritage” not only as evidence of the mentality “we, Europeans,” but also as a reminder of past conflicts, when that cultural tradition was imported or even coercively imposed. In this way a shared “European culture” is biased by the potential for completely different interpretations and may serve to absolutely different political and social goals.Since the beginning, the debates about European identity have been significantly stimulated by actual political and economic reality. European identity has been widely discussed, opposed and promoted during the last decades as related to the issues of the political legitimacy of the European Union. The problem of European identity gradually has become an object of the EU public policies. Discussions about European identity far transcend the boundaries of the Western Europe and are particularly important in Central East Europe. Namely, in this region, which witnessed late modernization, and late creation of modern nation states, Europeanness was a crucial question. Europe has always existed as a notion that reflected different countries in different periods. The “mirror” of Europeannes was one in which features of some nation were seen, or to put it into other words, Europeanness was one of the instruments in the creation of the notion of national identity. The question of Europeanness has been very significant in the understanding of Lithuanian identity. Because modernization entered Central East Europe as an imported phenomenon, most of the countries felt like smaller brothers of the bigger Europeans. Here Europeanness played an important role in the construction of the sense of national pride. To be Lithuanian has never been to be European, to be equal. In the nationalist discourse it was either to be “less than European,” or “more than European.”It is possible to distinguish two types of “European talk” among Lithuanians. While one “we, Europeans” means “we, non-Russians” and distinguishes Lithuanians as those of higher working morality and tolerance, the second “we, chasing the train of Europe” connotes continuous backwardness and a desperate need to transcend the “own” in order to overtake “them.” In this talk we can note that Lithuanians see themselves positively as Europeans only in contrast to “non-Europeans,” usually Russians. Meanwhile, Lithuanians do not conceive themselves as full-value Europeans when comparing themselves with Western Europeans. Paradoxically, this allows Lithuanians to think of themselves as “more Europeans,” since then such national values as “spirituality” and the legendary history of the “pagan empire” is juxtaposed against rational and pragmatic, even de-spiritualized “Europeans of the EU.”This often painful question of what does it mean to be European for a Lithuanian, sometimes tends to diminish the European dimension in general, and some different regional identity, for example, “Baltic” identification, comes to the fore. I will show how biased the question of Baltic identity is. While the future of the Baltic region (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), shaped by a common sad past, is an object of a political skepticism, for the same reason it wins the hearts of people, of which about 80% identify themselves as Balts. Nonetheless, despite abundant manifestations of national victimization, considering the western Other was necessary to define Lithuanian national identity. As David Laitin (2000) puts it, “[t]o an important degree, then, it is the Eastern Europeans who have a stronger interest in a utopian vision of “Europe” as a well-defined (and easily mimicked) culture than culturally secure Europeans who are citizens of the West European states.”Vakarų Europos akademiniame ir politiniame diskursuose europinio identiteto analizė dažniausiai siejama su ES politinio teisėtumo, nusakančio dalyvavimo demokratijos stygių, problema.
From nineteen Sixties to nineties Lithuanian photography reached its highest maturity. Its acclaim in the former Soviet Union prompted the apparition of a term Lithuanian school of photography, defining the mainstream of Lithuanian photography of the time. The authors to participate in this cultural phenomenon created a considerable body of photographic works, often metaphorically depicting Lithuanian ethnic culture and rural life. During the last decades the debates on the issues of the contemporary photographic creation are rising, implying questioning, whether or not the works of the newer generation lack creative maturity, Whether they are worth of being exposed next to those made by classics. This article provides an overview of similarities and differences in the work of the Lithuanian school of photography and the generation of the independent Lithuania, using a complex method of social iconography. The usage of this method will guide the discourse from the offsprings of the socially-based national art and social photography to the overview and localization of the Lithuanian social photography in the global scene. The research aims to emphasize the basic iconological differences in the works of the two creative generations, to name the changes of the Lithuanian social and cultural habits and to detennine if the iconography of the Lithuanian photography corresponds to its period of time. Two types of social photography are distinguished - social documentation and semiotic communication. Conclusions. The iconographic formulas, practiced by the photographers (1960-1990), like old persons portraits, are common also to other Eastern European countries. The frequent festive aspect (religious holiday, manifestation, basketball team Victory etc.) works as a reason for picture-taking, and expresses a Lithuanian preference of a holiday to workday, exterior to interior, spiritual to material, anecdote to invented story. Very few signs of material culture of the Soviet period appear. Inthe works of the classics, mirror of the spiritual culture is a face of old persons. Meanwhile the young generation discovers the importance of teenagers and youth as the marginal part of the postmodern demo graphic situation. The influence of media transfers images of convicts, drunkards, disabled and other disadvantaged social groups. The crisis of the contemporary photography might lie in the lack of social descriptiveness, but not in the definition of national, social or private identities.1960-1990 m. lietuvių fotografija pasiekia aukščiausią brandą - pagrindinė jos stilistinė srovė įvardinama kaip lietuvių fotografijos mokykla. Šios fotografijos srovės autorių kūriniai vaizdavo Lietuvos kaimo kultūrą ir todėl šiandien galėtų būti įvardijami kaip svarbi kultūrinio paveldo dalis. Pastaraisiais metais ryškėja debatai dėl jaunųjų autorių darbų kūrybiškumo ir vertumo juos eksponuoti šalia LFM klasikų darbų. Šiuo straipsniu norėčiau nušviesti sovietmečio ir nepriklausomybės laikotarpio lietuvių fotografijos panašumus ir skirtumus, pasitelkdamas kompleksinį socialinės ikonografijos tyrimo metodą. Pagrįsdamas metodą apžvelgiu socialinės reprezentacijos fotografijoje ištakas - tai padeda lokalizuoti lietuvių socialinės fotografijos vietą globaliame kontekste bei išskirti pagrindinius ikonografijos skirtumus LFM ir jaunosios fotografų kartų darbuose. Tyrimo uždaviniai - pasitelkiant ikonografinius modelius įvardinti: 1) pačios kūrybinės fotografijos ikonografíjos pokyčius, 2) Lietuvos visuomenei būdingas vertybines orientacijas, 3) aptarti fotografijos ir atitinkamo laikotarpio saitus
Politinis dalyvavimas ir socialinė aplinka Lietuvoje
Modern democratic policy is essentially grounded on participation of citizens in public decision-making process. The focus of the study was the impact of social environment on political participation. The method of study was survey sample data analysis. The results of analysis reflect relationship between number of people whom respondent discuss about political and societal matters and political participation. Data anlysis confirm an assumption that social environment has impact on political behaviour, i.e. in some cases social environment could encourage low status group political participation or discourage high status group political participation.
