    Exploring the role of social media literacy in adolescents' experiences with personalization: A Norwegian qualitative study

    Social media platforms rely on algorithms to filter and select content, thereby personalizing every individual's social media experience. Many use social media without awareness of this personalization and its impact, pointing to a need to both understand and improve literacy among active social media users. This qualitative study addresses adolescents' social media literacy through an investigation of their experiences with personalization on social media, aiming for a nuanced perspective of their outcomes. A thematic analysis of eight focus group interviews with 47 students aged 15–19 years uncovered two main themes: (1) diverse levels of adolescents' awareness and familiarity with personalization and (2) positive, negative, and mixed emotions toward personalization.     Genome-wide association study for methane emission traits in Danish Holstein cattle

    Selecting for lower methane emitting cows requires insight into the most biologically relevant phenotypes for methane emission, which are close to the breeding goal. Several methane phenotypes have been suggested over the last decade. However, the (dis)similarity of their underlying genetic architecture and correlation structures are poorly understood. Therefore, the objective of this study was to test association of SNP and genomic regions through GWAS on 8 CH4 emission traits in Danish Holstein cattle. The traits studied were methane concentration (MeC; ppm), methane production (MeP ; g/d), 2 definitions of residual methane (RMETc and RMETp: MeC and MeP regressed on metabolic body weight and energy-corrected milk, respectively), 2 definitions of methane intensity (MeI; MeIc = MeC/ECM and MeIp = MeP/ECM); 2 definitions of methane yield per kilogram of dry matter intake (MeY; MeYc = MeC/dry matter intake and MeYp = MeP/dry matter intake). A total of 1,962 cows with genotypes (Illumina BovineSNP50 Chip or Eurogenomic custom SNP chip) and repeated records of the above-mentioned 8 methane traits were analyzed. Strong associations were found with 3 traits (MeC, MeP, and MeYc) on chromosome 13 and with 5 traits (MeC, MeP, MeIp, MeYp, and MeYc) on chromosome 26. For MeIc, MeIp, RMETc, MeYc, and MeYp, some suggestive association signals were identified on chromosome 1. Genomic segments of 1 Mbp (n = 2,525) were tested for their association with these traits, which identified between 33 to 54 significantly associated regions. In a pairwise comparison, MeC and MeP were the traits that shared the highest number of significant segments (17). The same trend was observed when comparing SNP significantly associated with the traits MeC and MeP shared from 23 to 25 SNP (most of which were located in chromosomes 11, 13, and 26). Based on our results on GWAS and genetic correlations, we conclude that MeC is (genetically) more closely linked to MeP than any of the other methane traits analyzed.publishedVersio

    The circulating plasma metabolome of Neoparamoeba perurans-infected Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

    Metabolomics can provide insights into the dynamic small-molecule fluctuations occurring in response to infection and has become a valuable tool in studying the pathophysiology of diseases in recent years. However, its application in fish disease research is limited. Here, we report the circulating plasma metabolome of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) experimentally infected with Neoparamoeba perurans—the causative agent of amoebic gill disease (AGD). Plasma samples were collected from fish with varying degrees of infection inferred from an external gross morphological score of gill pathology (i.e., gill score [GS] 1 -- GS3), where a higher GS indicates advanced infection stage. Uninfected fish (GS0) served as the control. Typical pathologies associated with AGD infection, such as hyperplastic lesions and lamellar fusion, were evident in infected gill samples. Plasma metabolites were identified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a high-resolution quadrupole-orbitrap mass spectrometer. Identification of compounds were performed at four levels of certainty, where level 1 provided the most accurate compound identity. A total of 900 compounds were detected in the samples of which 143 were annotated at level 3, 68 on level 2b, 74 on level 2a, and 66 on level 1. Versus GS0, GS1 showed the highest number of significantly affected metabolites (104), which decreased with a higher GS. Adrenaline and adenosine were the two Level 1 compounds significantly affected by AGD regardless of GS, with the former increasing and the latter decreasing in infected fish. Hippuric acid significantly increased in GS1 and GS2, while the tryptophan metabolite indole-3-lactic acid decreased in response to the initial stage of infection but returned to basal levels at a higher GS. There were ten significantly affected metabolic pathways: Eight of which were significantly downregulated while two were downregulated in GS1 relative to GS0. The super-pathway of purine nucleotide salvage was enriched both within the upregulated metabolites in GS1vsGS0 and the down-regulated metabolites in GS3vsGS1. This is the first report on the circulating plasma metabolome of AGD infected salmon, and the results show that low infection levels resulted in a more dramatic metabolomic dysregulation than advanced infection stages. The metabolites identified are potential biological markers for the systemic physiological impact of AGD.publishedVersio
