The effectiveness of teaching English writing recount text by using guide question
This research is aimed to study using guide question in English teaching writing recount text of English students. The research was carried out by experimental method. The research population was the third grade semester of English students (two classes of treatment and group control which every class has 35 students). It is taken by using purposive sampling as the research sample. To know the effectiveness of teaching English writing recount by using guide question, the data collection technique used pre-test, treatment, and post-test. Next step, the pre and post-tests data were analyzed by t-test. The data analysis showed there is significantly correlation using Guide Question toward teaching writing recount text. It meant that English teaching writing recount text by using guide question is effective
The effect of Think Pair Share towards writing ability and learning motivation of the Islamic high school students
The study was aimed at measuring the effect of Think Pair Share (TPS) technique towards the students’ ability and their learning motivation in writing descriptive text at the Islamic high school (Madrasah Aliyah) Darul Ulum Palangka Raya. Quasi-experimental research design with pre-test and post-test was applied in this study. The population of the study was 72 students of the class X-IPS, X-IPA, and X-Religion, and the sample of this research was 47 students of the class X-IPS and X-IPA. The data were collected by using the writing test and questionnaire. It was used One –Way ANOVA to analyze the data and applied dependent Sample Post-test calculation to test the hypotheses. The findings shows that there is significant difference among groups after doing the treatment with F value is higher than F table (8.65>3.55). It was found that the teaching of writing using TPS technique was more effective than those without TPS technique with the significant value lower than alpha (0.01 lower < 0.05); the teaching of writing using TPS was more effective on student’s learning motivation than those without TPS technique; and there was significant different effect of using TPS technique towards writing ability and learning motivation (0.00<0.05). It means that the TPS technique gives a significant effect on the students’ ability and their learning motivation in writing descriptive text
Usability of Moodle question types by EFL teachers
The obvious fact that not all features of a software computer are used has driven the researcher to examine the usability of question types in the quiz activity module of Moodle. To examine which question types were perceived useful, easy to use and learn along with satisfying and the dimensions that made them probably adopted in the day-to-day teaching-learning process, 30 teachers of English as a foreign language having no previous Moodle experiences assessed 23 question types question using the Usefulness, Satisfaction, and Ease of Use Questionnaire. The participants showed agreements on the dimensions of usefulness, ease of use and learning, along with the satisfaction of 10 types in which Random Short-Answer Matching, Multiple Choice, OU Multiple Response, and True/False were most highly rated. Findings also suggest that the agreement levels of usefulness and ease of use were comparatively higher than that of the other dimensions. The adoption of Moodle question types in the classrooms could be motivated by their usefulness and ease of use. This study may help explore the fundamental needs of the teachers when administering online tests in the Moodle-based e-assessment. Â
Learning English vocabulary by Cangkulan game
This research is deliberately purposed to know the improvement of English vocabulary of VII-E Class students in SMPN 1 Muara Teweh by the reason that the students have difficulty in classifying English vocabularies. Sample is all students of VII-E Class which consists of 30 students. The data is collected from test and questionnaire. To analyze data, the researcher uses quantitative method from the tests score and questionnaire then takes conclusion. The tests show that learning by Cangkulan Game effectively improves the students’ vocabulary. It is showed by the result of pretest where 40% students are passed with the highest score is 78 and score rate is 55, 3. Posttest shows that 70% students are passed with the highest score is 90 and score rate is 67, 8 while the improvement increases significantly in 30%. The students are also able to classify the vocabularies. Based on the questionnaire, the researcher concludes that the students are more interested in learning. Besides, this activity supports their character building includes confidence, curiosity and loving their country
Developing English speaking materials integrated Youtube video for management students department of Darwan Ali university Sampit
This research is aimed at developing English speaking materials integrated youtube video for management students at Darwan Ali University Sampit. The design of this research is Research and Development. The subjects were 34 students of the third semester of business management program at Darwan Ali Uversity Sampit. The researcher adopted ADDIE Model. ADDIE is acronym of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. This research used worksheet and questionnaire as the instruments of the research. The data were used to develop and evaluate the forth units of English speaking materials. It was found that the English speaking materials in this research are appropriate and effective for the third semester management students at Darwan Ali University Sampit. The findings and the process of the study can be used in teaching learning activity
Providing written corrective feedback on students' writing assignments at IAIN Palangka Raya
Written Correction Feedback (WCF) is an essential aspect of any English language writing course. The study attempts to provide EFL writing teachers with some key considerations in providing written corrective feedback on English language learners' written assignments at English Department of IAIN Palangka Raya. To begin with, the researcher reviews reasons supporting the practice of giving feedback on student’ written errors. Next, the researcher presents categories of written errors and discussed different ways of offering corrective feedback. Finally, the researcher summarizes key considerations in giving feedback on student written errors. The number of the participants are 16 students who joined Essay Writing class. Based on the research findings, it was found that there are some errors made by the learners such as Verb tense (34 errors or 10.37%), Word order (42 errors or 12.80%), word choice (27 errors or 8.23%), spelling (53 errors or 16.16%), Article (37 errors or 11.28%), Preposition (59 errors or 17.99%), Pronoun agreement (19 errors or 5.79%), and Comma splices (57 errors or 17.38%). The study found some feedback types such as focused (43%), reformulation (26%), metalinguistic (13%), indirect (11%), and direct (7%)
Character education values in a commercial English textbook for vocational school
This qualitative research was conducted to identify the implementation of character education values in a commercial  English textbook entitled “Forward an English†For the Tenth Grade of Vocational High School. The 18 (eighteen) character education values observed in this reseach consist of religious behavior, honesty, tolerance, discipline, hard-working, creativity, independence, democracy, curiosity, patriotism, appreciation towards achievement, courteous/communicative ability, love peace, love reading, conservation, social care, logical thinking, and responsibility. This research identified sentences and texts as a source of data by using content analysis. The analysis indicated that 15 (fifteen) character education values are explicitly and implicitly reflected in the textbook
Using web (e-learning) as a secondary study in English learning process at Darwan Ali university Sampit
The aims of research are to find out the role, function, and the benefit for students by using Web (E-learning) in IT at Darwan Ali University Sampit. This type of research is descriptive by using a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques are in-depth interviews, literature studies, documentation, and observation. The result showed that 1) Web (E-learning) at Darwan Ali University Sampit has a role to facility for syllabus of English learning process. 2) Web (E-learning) is an interesting and an attractive learning facility and there have functions for students: First, the students get of information and learning materials easily, quickly, and clearly. 3) they can get information and learning materials forms of media such as text, picture, and video. 4) The student’s skill in English could develop their reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar’s skills. 5) The students are more active and enthusiastic in the learning process because they have participatedted directly
Domestication and foreignization in translating English metaphors in Westlife’s song lyrics into Indonesian
Metaphor has been widely discussed within the discipline of Translation Studies. Metaphors are challenging situation for the translator since transferring them from one language to another one may be hampered by linguistic and cultural differences. Metaphors are not always obvious, and if we are not totally familiar with linguistic and cultural features of the source language, shifts sometimes occur in the process of translation. In the process of metaphorical translation, the translator will inevitably encounter the problem of cultural differences, and has to resort to two translation strategies in cultural translation, namely, domestication and foreignization. This study aimed to find out the strategies used by the translator in translating English metaphors into Indonesian. The data of this study were English metaphors taken from Westlife’s song lyrics. The writer analysed the strategies used by the translator in translating English metaphors occur in their song lyrics. The question- whether the foreignization and domestication strategies are applicable in translating English metaphors, and if so, which one is the most appropriate in this context motivated the study
Structured bilingual based instruction model in teaching English for specific purposes
This paper aims at finding out the model of bilingual based Instruction (BBI) implemented by the lecturers in teaching English, the context used by the lecturer and the frequency of native and target language used by the lecturer. The data was taken from three department, Physics Education Department, Biology Education Department, and math Education Department. This study applied descriptive study. The finding showed that Bilingual based Instruction (BBI) implemented by the lecturer in teaching English for academic purposes was categorized structured bilingual based Instruction. The lecturers used native and target language structurally. The context used by the lecturers are greetings, giving explanation, giving instruction, giving motivation, giving reinforcement, and giving thanks. The lecturers used target language more than native language. The native language was used to clarify and reinforce meaning. The target language is used to give exposure to the students
