Improving Students' English Skills Using Bilingual Word Wall Media at SMPN Satap 3 Hanau, Paring Raya Village
This research aimed at improving students' English skills using bilingual word walls media at SMPN Satap 3 Hanau, Paring Raya village. This present research is an alternative to improve the English language skills of students who have minimum internet access and inadequate facilities and infrastructure. To meet the research objective, classroom action research was used as the research method. The research data were obtained through observation, field notes, and data from the students' vocabulary mastery test results. This research was carried out through several stages, namely: (1) planning the actions to be taken, namely preparing the model and approach to be taken; (2) using Word wall media in learning; (3) Observing the results of the action; (4) examining, seeing and considering the results or impacts of actions from various criteria. The results showed that in the first cycle there was an improvement of students' vocabulary mastery by 23.3% and in the second cycle had an improvement of vocabulary mastery by 33.6%. In conclusion, Word wall media helped students remember vocabulary while the Vocabularies Handbook pocketbook makes it easy to search for vocabulary according to the material in a shorter time than searching in a dictionary
Students' Perceptions towards the Use of Quizziz as A Tool in Improving Reading Skills
The use of various teaching and learning applications is now significant during online distance learning in the course of diversifying teaching approaches to help retain students’ focus and attract students’ interest in English language learning. With increasingly rapid technological advancement, Quizizz, an interactive quiz application is one of the current teaching and learning tools that can be used in classrooms to improve students’ reading skills. Educators can easily integrate the use of this application in the process of teaching to help build students’ language skills. Specifically focusing on skimming and scanning skills, Quizizz allows students to read and simultaneously practice both skills in an interactive way. The use of both linear and non-linear text can also be embedded in the application thus providing a variety in the activity designed. This study aimed to investigate UiTM diploma students’ perceptions toward using Quizizz as a tool in improving students’ reading skills. Consequently, an innovative speed-reading contest was designed in testing the effectiveness of Quizizz in helping students to apply the reading skills namely skimming and scanning that have been taught in class. The outcomes of this study are expected to provide educators with insights on the usage of Quizizz as an alternate learning media that is good for both educators and students in aiding teaching and learning proces
The Correlation among Students’ Reading Motivation, Anxiety, and Comprehension during the Covid 19 Pandemic
Nowadays, we are facing the Covid-19 Pandemic which certainly has a significant impact on human life, one of them is education. E-Learning is the solution for education during covid-19 pandemic. When teaching and learning activities have to be shifted from home, reading comprehension is necessary for the students. Improving reading comprehension is crucial for success in every academic domain, particularly in courses focused on reading and literature. They must improve their reading comprehension, because reading develops the mind and discover us to new things. Reading motivation and reading anxiety are the factors that influenced students to increase their reading comprehension. This research was aimed to (1) find out the correlation between the students’ reading motivation and students’ reading comprehension. (2) find out the correlation between students’ reading anxiety and students’ reading comprehension. (3) find out the correlation of students’ reading motivation, students’ reading anxiety and students’ reading comprehension. This research was used quantitative method with a correlational design. The subject of this research is 21 students of IAIN Palangka Raya. The instrument that was used are two questionnaires and one test. The finding was showed that there was no significant relationship between students’ reading motivation and students’ reading anxiety (.112>.05), there was significant correlation between students’ reading anxiety and students’ reading comprehension (.019<.05), among students’ reading motivation, students’ reading anxiety (F= 5.790, p= .011) gave significant effect on the students’ reading comprehension
The Correlations among Writing Motivation, Anxiety and Proficiency
Writing cannot be separated from everyday life, both in education and other fields such as communication. Writing motivation and writing anxiety has always been a research topic because it was rare for researchers to combine three variables. The researcher is interested in examining these three variables. There were three purposes of this study. There were (1) to measure the correlation between the students' writing motivation and writing proficiency, (2) to measure the correlation between the students' writing anxiety and writing proficiency, (3) to measure the correlation between students' writing motivation, writing anxiety and writing proficiency. The design of the study was quantitative research with a correlation design. The research instruments were questionnaires and writing test. Two types of questionnaires were used. First, about students' writing motivation, the researcher used a questionnaire of the Self-Beliefs, Writing-Beliefs, and Attitude Survey (SWAS) developed by Wright et al. (2019). The second questionnaire to writing anxiety used a second language writing anxiety questionnaire (SLWAI) developed by Cheng (2004). The writing test was an argumentative text. The total sample of the research was 21 students fifth-semester students of the English Department at a state university in Palangka Raya Indonesia. The numerical data were analyzed by Kendall’s Correlation Coefficient that showed that: (1) the correlation between writing motivation and writing proficiency was the significant (2-tailed) 0.396 > 0.05, (2) the correlation between writing anxiety and writing proficiency was the significant (2-tailed) 0.024 < 0.05, the correlation writing motivation, writing anxiety and writing proficiency was the significant (2- tailed) .090 > 0.05. Thus, it sums that there was no correlation between writing motivation and writing proficiency. There was a correlation between writing anxiety and writing proficiency, and there was no correlation between writing motivation, writing anxiety, and writing proficiency
Developing Exemplary Descriptive Texts in Local Content
Developing teaching material in local content becomes essential in teaching English for senior high school students. The students will learn not only about the language but also about how they use it in real life. They need to experience how to talk or describe their local context where they belong to in English. English teachers especially in Palangka Raya municipality have a problem in finding texts in local content in teaching writing. In English Textbook released by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia, revised edition 2017 for senior high school for first year, there are 18 texts in total, only one text talks about Central Kalimantan. Even in the internet, English teachers are also hard to find example of good texts in local contents as well as the standardized one. In order to develop standardized English texts for teaching descriptive text in local content topic for tenth grade students of Senior High School, this research used Research and Development using ADDIE model. The result of this research showed that both validators agreed the developed texts were fulfilled the criteria of the good text for teaching descriptive text. This result was also supported by the result of trial task which achieved good score in average and the positive responds and comments from the questionnaire
The Relationship between Public Speaking Anxiety and Achievement
For those who use English as a foreign language, speaking English is one of the most difficult issues. This is because English is rarely utilized as a foreign language in everyday life. Consequently, students have some emphasis and are susceptible to anxiety when they are asked to express their ideas in an English-speaking class. Furthermore, when they were asked to make a public speaking. Public speaking is an important skill in analyzing and practicing college students as they go towards universities and their careers. However, public speaking is greatly influenced by principles associated with psychology aspect such as anxiety. It can be predicted that public speaking anxiety may be influenced public speaking performance. So, public speaking anxiety can influence students’ achievement. This study aimed to examine the correlation between public speaking anxiety and achievement. The research is classified as a quantitative method with a correlation design. The analysis of the data was carried out by using SPSS program version 24. Twenty-one college students in the fifth semester of the English department at IAIN Palangka Raya were the subjects of this study. Researchers found no significant connection between public speaking anxiety and speech performance (p>.05). The finding contributed to our bodies of labour inside the fields of public speaking anxiety
The Challenges of Implementing Higher Order Thinking Skills in Online Distance Learning
While there has been a lot of emphasis on nurturing students to become critical thinkers, it has been found that overall, Malaysian students are still lacking in this skill. The current pandemic situation has posed a problem in promoting HOTS especially when teachers and students have to adapt to online learning. This paper thus, explores the challenges faced in implementing higher order thinking skills for online distance learning. This conceptual paper focused on studies related to challenges of online learning during the pandemic, the development of HOTS and the implementation of HOTS in Malaysia. Based on the various studies related to the issue, conclusions were drawn that there is a need for suitable materials to develop thinking skills and there is also a need for change in the exam-oriented culture affecting teaching and learning. Future studies are recommended on the perceptions of teachers and students towards the implementation of HOTS for ODL
A Survey on Vocabulary Learning Strategies Used by The Students at SMP Muhammadiyah Palangka Raya
The research was carried out in order to identify students’ vocabulary learning strategies to learn English at SMP Muhammadiyah Palangka Raya. The sample were taken based on purposive sampling. This research used quantitative approach. The research design of this study was survey research. The data were analyzed using Ms. Excel and SPSS 24 Program. These reserach subjects were 55 (fifty) students of class VIIIB and class VIIID at SMP Muhammadiyah Palangka Raya. The data were analyzed using Ms. Excel and SPSS 24 Program. The data in this research collected by using questionnaire as main instrument. The result of the study showed that the higher interval of learning strategies that choose student is learning strategies in memories strategies got ≥74% interpretation of interval. Students’ Responses to the Application of the Scaffolding Method in Improving English Reading Digital Text Skills for Multimedia Study Program
The emergence of the COVID-19 virus has wreaked havoc on education systems like never before. Many schools and institutions are closing over the world. The Indonesian government has decided to implement a remote learning system based on online learning. Many schools and higher-level education institutions have introduced digital source systems including the digital text to read. This study used a descriptive qualitative method to learn about the students' responses to the use of the scaffolding method in enhancing English reading digital text abilities for the Multimedia Study Program. The research was conducted at the State Polytechnic of Creative Media from four classes in the Multimedia Engineering Technology study program. Research data is taken from the questionnaire to collect the information on the application of the scaffolding method that can contribute to increasing students’ reading skills. This study addresses the challenges in improving digital text reading skills, which are closely related to students in the Multimedia program. The results revealed that the students' perceptions of applying scaffolding to improve reading skills were favorable. The students’ positive responses to the questionnaire statements on the scaffolding method's use demonstrate this. As a result, scaffolding could be employed as a way for teaching English to students who want to improve their reading skills, particularly in the form of digital text
Using Word Wall Medium to Improve Students’ Junior Secondary School Vocabulary Mastery
This research aimed at finding out whether or not the use of wordwall media improves EFL junior secondary school students’ vocabulary mastery. The study applied pre-experimental research design. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Campalagian Polewali Mandar West Sulawesi. Twenty three (23) students were taken as samples of the study by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument of this research was a writing test which administered as a pre-test and post-test. Descriptive statistic was used to analyze the data. The result of data analysis showed that the t-test value for vocabulary was 114.1 and t-table was 2.074. It means that t-test was greater than t-table or 114.1>2.074. The alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of word wall media could improve students’ vocabulary mastery of the EFL junior secondary school students in Polewali Mandar West Sulawesi
