Correlation between metacognitive strategies and listening comprehension of the 4th semester students of English department at IAIN Palangka Raya
The purposes of this research are (1) to find out how metacognitive awareness strategies applied by 4th semester students of IAIN Palangka Raya in the learning process; (2) to find out the listening ability of 4th semester students of IAIN Palangka Raya; and (3) to find out whether or not there is correlation between metacognitive strategy and listening comprehension. The research belongs to the quantitative approach, and the design is correlation study. There are 63 students as the samples of this research that taken by using total sampling and purposive sampling technique. The data are collected by using three instruments, they are MALQ (Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire), Listening TOEFL score and interview. The data are analyzed by using pearson product moment correlation coefficient. The result showed that r-obtained (-0.127) is lower than r-table (0.248), then the level of probability (p) significance (sig.2-tailed) is .321. Subsequently, p value (.321) is higher than 0.05. Then, it means that there is no correlation between metacognitive strategies and listening comprehension. On the other words, students’ metacognitive strategies are not a dominant factor that affect their listening comprehension
Students’ perceptions towards the use of Podcast in listening class
The purpose of this study is to describe the students’ perceptions towards the use of podcast in listening and their problems toward this media. The research type was case study in qualitative research method. The data from this research are collected from the questionnaire and interview. The subjects of this research were learners from 3rd and5th semester English Education Study Program, which focused on Interpretive Listening and Extensive Listening classes. Questionnaires were distributed to 115 students in listening classes and interview data were obtained from 10 students’ representatives who were samples of this study. The result of this research found that: (1) the students have an enjoyment in using podcast in listening class, because podcast is easy to use. Students agreed that podcast could help them in learning listening and they have willingness in using podcast as an alternative way to learn listening, and podcast also motivated them because it engaged their interest. The content of the podcast and clear native pronunciation derived from podcast could hone their skills especially listening and speaking skill. Besides, most of the students also agreed that podcast was easy to get since there are many podcasting websites available on the internet. (2) the problem that the students encountered in using podcast was the length of podcast too long for them. Because of that, students might feel bored and lose their focus when listening to the podcast
Examining students’ perceptions of using portfolio as an assessment tool in an EFL writing classroom
This research article aimed to investigate the perceptions stated by students regarding the use of portfolio as an assessment tool in an EFL writing class. The participants in this study were 28 Indonesian tertiary-level EFL learners. The purposes of this qualitative study were to explore students’ opinions regarding the use of portfolio as an assessment tool, and to analyze the extents to which portfolio assessment benefited students. The research methods used were students’ reflective essays and semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed two main points. First, most of the students argued that portfolio was an effective tool to assess their writing tasks. Second, portfolio seemed to benefit students through reflecting on their previous writing tasks. The pedagogical implications of this study were to provide insight to EFL teachers into how portfolio could be used as an assessment tool particularly in writing courses, and to inform EFL teachers with some suggestions to carry out portfolio assessment to help students improve their writing tasks
Lady Gaga’s speech on Elle women award: Theme and stylistic levels
This study aims at conducting a stylistic analysis in terms of theme or intention of one speech uttered by Lady Gaga at Elle Women Award and explicating four stylistic levels including graphology level, morphology level, lexical level, and syntax level deployed in its making. In an attempt to uncover the theme or picture of the speech, the writer employed content analysis for this study. The theme of the speech was revealed by analyzing the core content of the message of Gaga’s speech to determine the linguistic substance and semantic indication that directed to main message of the speech. The results of the analysis show that the stylistic levels play its important part in the effective use of words in speech delivery. Further, these elements also contribute well in delivering the speaker’s intention to the audience. This study recommends that the speaker must select the choice of words and structure they use in their speech before they deliver the speech to the audience
Critical thinking concept: Students’ perception and learning experience in writing class
Critical thinking has been defined in many different ways. It’s the term which reflect people’s nature on critically perceiving a subject matter. In university level, having critical thinking skill is prominent for students. However, the basic concept of critical thinking may not well grasp among students. This study investigates the student’s perception over the concept of critical thinking and knowing their learning activities whether it applies the concept of critical thinking specifically in writing class. The references on critical thinking concept reviewed as the framework in this study. This study involved first year students of English education study program of a private university. They were required to fill the online questionnaire. The findings of this study revealed that the students partially grasping the concept of critical thinking. There were indicated that students have some problem in comprehending the concept. Thus happen for the inexistence of learning environment promoting the students critical learning habit and skill in writing class. While they experience writing class with lecturers as instructors

Children’s English vocabulary acquisition in EFL primary school context of Golden Christian school Palangka Raya
This study was aimed to investigate how children’s English vocabulary acquisition process in Golden Christian School. Case study qualitative design with ethnographic were used to find out the answer of problem of the study. The population of this study was the children who studying in Golden Christian School third grade. The students were in one class consisted of 15 students. The observation and documentation result show whole class activity and interview result used to find parents contributions in their children’s English vocabulary acquisition at home. The finding of this study showed some points as follows: First, school and teacher had important role in children’s English vocabulary acquisition at school. Teacher was being a model and source for children in learning English, making the material easy to understand and also using simple language for children. Second, parent contributions in children English vocabulary acquisition at home are by be their friend in speaking use English, suggest children to practice speaking at home, give children private course and let them to learn English or found new vocabulary by using social media and TV channel
Investigating Gen Z students’ perceptions on the use of Instagram to improve vocabulary
This study was aimed at knowing Gen Z students’ perceptions in using Instagram as their learning environment platform to improve their vocabulary. Gen Z students as the foreign land generation need more attention and understanding. They have others convenience environment of learning English language. The research design was looked at by the case study research method. The total of the sample were 9 students in MAN KOTA Palangka Raya at X Mipa 2, XI Bahasa, and XII Mipa 6. The instruments of collecting data were used questionnaires, Interview, and Observation. The data were analyzed by combining the three instrument finding. The results finding covered: 1) Instagram was included as the part of their learning style, which was called by Edutainment. Instagram was claimed by Gen Z students as the part of their learning styles. It has made them feeling comfortable in learning English through Instagram. The students thought if the process of following some accounts has produced some input from every English creator contents’ posting. (2) Gen Z students were preferred using English video content to others media in Instagram. It was also found that Instagram was considered an interesting English vocabulary input
The effect of motion picture toward students’ ability in writing descriptive text
Writing as one of the English skills is important to be learned by the students. However, it required complex instruction, special techniques and method. Thus, it is unavoidable that the students have problem to master the skill. The objective of the study was to measure the effect of motion picture toward writing ability. This was quasi experiment design, especially time series design by using one group pre-test and post-test design. The population was the first grade students of SMAN 3 Palangka Raya and the sample was X IPS 1 class with 35 students, since the class was the most stable one after fourth times of tries out. The data was collected by using writing descriptive text, in which the students were given the pre-test before the treatment and the post-test after the treatment. The data obtained were analyzed by using T-test computation with paired sample T-test. The mean score of the pre-test was 53.94, and the mean score of the post-test was 71.08. Based on the result of the paired sample T-test, the mean of paired sample difference between pre-test and post-test of writing achievement was 4.790 for T-value, and T-table was 2.032. Since T-value was higher than T-table, it could be concluded that there was a significant effect of motion picture to the students’ ability in writing descriptive text
An analysis of lesson plan in the 2013 curriculum made by English teachers
oai:ojs2.e-proceedings.iain-palangkaraya.ac.id:article/1The purpose of this study is to analyze the Basic Competencies (KD) in Lesson Plan (LP) Curriculum 2013 made by English teachers who participated in the 2013 curriculum implementation training at LPMP Kal-teng.This research used qualitative method. The research subject was taken from the KD 2 lesson plan prepared by four teachers in one group. The data were obtained through documentation. Â The researcher used a manual coding sheet in analyzing the collected data. The results showed that the teacher implemented KD into the LP well based on the components of 2013Â curriculum, it is evidenced by the preparation of a continuous LP based on the format of the Ministry of Education and Culture no 22 of 2016. All written stages were complete even though there were some lacking in writing some indicators of the lesson plan such as in writing time allocation, giving motivation in pre-activity, formulating learning objectives, using operational verbs and selecting learning material for students
