An Analysis of English Material for Tourism Industry at Vocational High School 4 Sampit Based on ESP Approach
Teaching material is an important aspect in teaching and learning process, because it gives significant impacts toward reaching the teaching and learning goal. English has become an important subject to master by the Tourism Industry students of Vocational High School 4 Sampit. Because most tourism industries use English as a global language, hence, English teaching material should be related to vocational school students’ needs for their future workplace. This study aimed to analyze the compatibility of the English teaching material with the students’ needs. This study was a descriptive qualitative study employing content analysis. Questionnaire was used as the research instrument in collecting the data. The data were analyzed by using ESP approach based on Richards and Rodger’s theory (2001). The findings show that the English teaching materials used in Tourism Industry Program at Vocational High School 4 Sampit were not related to the students’ needs. The materials were too general for Vocational High School students. The result suggested that English material for Vocational High School 4 Sampit must be developed based on students’ needs of tourism industry
The Effect of Alphabet Game on Students' Vocabulary Mastery of Descriptive Text
Mastery of vocabulary is very important because it can improve of many subjects in English learning, and game is one of the media that can be used to teach vocabulary to students. This research was intended to find out the effect of using alphabet game on students' vocabulary mastery of descriptive text of the seventh grade students of MTsN 2 Kota Palangka Raya. This research used experimental method in form of one-group pre-test post-test design. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of MTsN 2 Kota Palangka Raya and 37 students were taken as the sample. The tests used as the instrument to collect the data were in the form of multiple-choice tests which consisted of 20 items. The result indicated that teaching vocabulary using alphabet game as media had significant effect on the students' vocabulary mastery. It was proved by T-test score (0.979) which was smaller than T-table (1.690). Since T-test < T-table, the null hypothesis (Hâ‚€) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be concluded that there was a significant effect of using alphabet game on students' vocabulary mastery of descriptive text of the seventh grade of MTsN 2 Kota Palangka Raya
Student Needs for Developing E-Book for Teaching Speaking Skills for Young Learners
In the Curriculum 2013, English is excluded from the Elementary School Subjects, especially for the State Elementary Schools. The English teachers found difficulty in providing a textbook that covers the student needs. Fortunately, in this pandemic covid-19, it is easier in the teaching and learning process by using electronic books or E-Book. This study aimed to find out the student needs to be able to develop an E-Book for teaching speaking skills for the fourth grade of elementary school students. This research’s respondents were four English elementary school teachers in Palangka Raya and 30 students of the fourth grade of Elementary School at SDN 11 Langkai. This research was done to do the first step of the design of Research and Development (R&D) based on ADDIE (need analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation) as proposed by Branch (2009) elaborated with local content in Palangka Raya. The instrument applied was a guided interview. The data obtained were analyzed and described qualitatively. The finding showed that there were positive responses from the result of the interview. Then, the findings become basic for the researcher to develop E-Book for teaching English speaking skills
Utilizing V-log for Teaching Speaking During Pandemic Covid 19
Speaking is considered as important skill to be mastered by students in terms of communication needs. However, it is categorized as a complicated skill to teach. Online teaching mode becomes challenging for the teacher in teaching speaking. The teacher should select effective and appropriate media for teaching speaking skills, one of which is by using a V-log. This article aims to descriptively explain the teaching steps using V-log based on online interview results, observation, and documentation. The result revealed that the teacher conducted teaching speaking by using zoom meeting with the following steps: (1) sharing the video in the share screen, (2) playing the video in full screen, (3) asking the students to observe the video, (4) instructing the students to speak up like on the video, (5) assigning the students to make a video V-log and upload the video in the social media, such as YouTube, Instagram and Facebook
Online Game-Based Approach in Teaching English: Cases of Teaching during Pandemic Covid-19 at Universitas Darwan Ali Sampit
Teaching during pandemic now changes the concept of teaching learning from the conventional way to virtual based teaching. Teachers might use online media in conducting the lesson, for instance zoom, google meet, online game, and so forth. The aim of the study was to know the students’ ability in English by using this online game called Quizizz (web-based, Quizizz.com) as a well-featured platform yet interactive for freshmen in English I class at Universitas Darwan Ali Sampit in academic year 2020/2021. The design of the study was experimental research design in quantitative method. The population of this research was the freshmen of Business Management class taking English I subject. Two classes were taken as the sample, they were: FB 1 A as the control class and FB 1 B as the experimental class. To collect the main data, pre-test and post-test were used. The data from those tests were analyzed by using SPSS for Windows version 16.0. To find out the validity and the reliability of the instrument, the data from the English I quiz result were collected and analyzed. The result of research showed that the t-test gave t-value of 2.999 which was higher than t table 2.009, with sig. (2-tiled) showing that .004 was lower than .05. It could be concluded that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted; which means teaching English using online game Quizizz could improve the students’ ability in English
The Difficulties in Writing Descriptive Text Faced by the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 7 Palangka Raya
The research was conducted using descriptive qualitative method to analyze the difficulties in writing descriptive text especially in generic structure and language features, faced by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 7 Palangka Raya. An essay test was given to 20 students of the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 7 Palangka Raya to obtain the data about their difficulties in writing descriptive text. The result concluded that there were 10 students (50%) faced the difficulties in generic structures. They sometimes did not write ‘identification’ or ‘description’, or they did not write it completely and clearly. They had difficulties to analyze them that they placed ‘description’ in the ‘identification’. Some of them even wrote sentences which were not really related. On grammar, there were 8 students (40%) who faced difficulties and on mechanics there were 8 students (40%) who faced the difficulties. The difficulties were in using present tense ‘to be’, ‘pronoun’, and ‘adjective’; and in mechanics they had difficulties in using ‘capitalization’ and ‘punctuation’, in which sometimes they forgot to capitalize the first alphabet in the beginning sentence. All of that means that they were stated as having difficulties in writing good descriptive text
An Analysis on the Students’ Ability in Writing Conclusion of Argumentative Essay of the Eleventh Grade SMAN 3 Tanjung
Writing is an act to express the idea, feeling and facts in written form, including argumentative essay. This research describes the analysis of students’ ability in writing conclusion of argumentative essay at the eleventh grade of SMAN 3 Tanjung. Descriptive-qualitative research method was used with the total subject of 13 students at XI IPA of SMAN 3 Tanjung. The data were collected through writing test and the results were categorized in percentage. The result of the research denoted that there were 64% students who were in good category in writing the content of conclusion of argumentative essay. However, it was also found that 76% of the students had low ability in grammar and 90% in diction. It can be concluded that students’ ability in writing the content of conclusion of argumentative essay is in good category but with limited ability in grammar and diction
Audio Visual Learning Application of Dayak Ngaju Language - English
This study aims to develop an audiovisual learning application for Dayak Ngaju language - English that can be accessed by elementary school-aged children through a web page and smartphone. This application was developed based on the writers’ previous study entitled: Web-based Picture Dictionary of Dayak Ngaju language – English. The applied research model was used to adopt techniques in the Agile model using Extreme Programming which consists of planning, design, coding, and testing. To obtain the data needed in this application development, the writers used data collection methods in the form of direct observation, interviews, and library research. The study was conducted at SDN Percobaan Palangka Raya, Jl. Damang Leman No.37. The result of the study was an audiovisual learning application based on mobile web for elementary school level which can be accessed through both personal computers and smartphones. The nouns display on this application are related to parts of the body, things in the classroom, things in the kitchen, food and drink, and means of transportation. The students can learn two languages by looking at the available pictures and listening to the pronunciation. Since it is equipped with real pictures (visual) and sound (audio)
Need Analysis of Pocket Dictionary of Dayak Ngaju Local Language for Elementary School Students
Some of Elementary Schools in Palangka Raya used Dayak Ngaju language as a local content subject. Unfortunately, there are many students who get problems in learning Dayak Ngaju language. This research aims to find out whether a pocket dictionary of Dayak Ngaju local language was needed for teaching vocabulary for Elementary School students. The research was conducted in descriptive-qualitative method, and the subjects were one teacher and 25 fifth grade students of Elementary School at SDN 8 Langkai in Palangka Raya. The data were in the form of qualitative data, obtained from the results of interview with the teacher and questionnaires distributed to the students in order to know the students’ need of pocket dictionary of Dayak Ngaju. From the results of interview and questionnaires, the researcher found that there were positive responses toward the needs of a pocket dictionary of Dayak Ngaju. They strongly agreed to have the pocket dictionary of Dayak Ngaju made in three languages, i.e., Dayak Ngaju, Indonesian, and English. Then, the findings become the basic for the researcher to further develop a pocket dictionary of Dayak Ngaju local language for teaching Dayak Ngaju as a local content subject and English vocabulary for Elementary School students
Teaching English during Pandemic Covid-19 for the Secondary School Students in Palangka Raya
The Covid 19 pandemic has changed the mode of how teaching is conducted. The teachers must be able to adapt to the conditions. As the government asks not to teach in the classroom, teachers are forced to be more creative in teaching. This article discusses teachers’ reflection in teaching English virtually at the secondary school level after Central Kalimantan was designated as a red zone during the pandemic that learning must be done virtually home. The data were taken by a questionnaire sent through google form to 20 secondary school English teachers in Palangka Raya. The result showed, the score 77, it means that teaching English virtually is very difficult. Meanwhile, score 71 was difficult to get the materials, score 70 agreed that getting proper media related to materials is difficult, score 71 agreed that in accessing the technology in teaching virtually is difficult, and score 86, teachers strongly agreed that in virtual learning teachers must be more creative. They also said the level of difficulty in teaching virtually was consecutively Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening. Finally, score 95 showed that teachers strongly agreed that teaching English for secondary school level was better to be done in direct classroom meeting mode
