    Need Analysis of English E-Dictionary for Civil Engineering at Palangka Raya University

    Dictionary is a reference source in print or electronic form containing words which are usually arranged alphabetically and used to know the meaning. The purpose of this study was to analyze the students’ need as the base for developing an English E-dictionary as learning media for students majoring in Civil Engineering at the University of Palangka Raya. This research was a descriptive-qualitative research with the instruments of online questionnaire sent to the students and online interview with the lectures obtain the data. The results showed than an electronic English-Indonesia dictionary was preferable because it was easy to use anywhere. The result also stated that the electronic English-Indonesian dictionary must contain Civil Engineering terms and be arranged along with information about the function, forms, pronunciations, and meaning of the terms. The English-Indonesian electronic dictionary was stated to be an effective learning tool to enhance vocabulary learning for the students majoring in Civil Engineering

    Need Analysis of the Use of Local Content for English Reading Texts for Grade X Students of SMA Pesona Riam Mangkikit

    Students read texts to improve their English reading comprehension. In this case, students really need English reading texts to help them comprehend the local content according to their environment. This study applied a descriptive-qualitative method and to collect the data questionnaire was distributed to the students of Grade X of SMA Pesona Riam Mangkikit as the respondents. The obtained data were analyzed using percentage. The results of this study indicated that students really needed English reading text materials containing their interest and needs of the local content to improve their reading comprehension

    Correlation between Students’ Anxiety and Speaking Ability at English Department of IAIN Palangka Raya

    This study was focused to find out if there is or not any correlation between students’ anxiety and speaking ability at the 3rd semester students of English Department IAIN Palangka Raya. The method of this research was quantitative and correlation was the design of the research. The sample of the research was the 3rd semester students of English Department at IAIN Palangka Raya consisting of 30 students taken by cluster random sampling technique. The instruments were questionnaire and speaking test. The first instrument was FLCAS questionnaire sheet developed by Horwitz et.al (1986), and the second instrument was speaking test. The result of this research showed that the result of r calculation for students’ anxiety and their speaking test is -.269. Based on the table of interpretation of r value, the result of r calculated (-.269) is between 0.200 and 0.400, This value shows that there is a negative correlation in low correlation criteria. From the significance (2 tailed), the writers get the score .151. It means r>0.05 which showed Ho cannot be rejected. The result explained that there is a correlation between two variables, students’ anxiety and speaking ability of 3rd semester students of English Department IAIN Palangka Raya

    The Use of Youtube Video Series by Non English Major Students Of the Faculty of Economics for Speaking Skill

    This study was conducted to investigate the use of social media especially YouTube by students of Non English Major of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Palangka Raya. It was also to see the impact of using social media especially YouTube to improve their speaking ability. The study design of this study was descriptive qualitative. Fifteen students of the Faculty of Economics were selected as participants to speak in front of hand phone camera with the topics already prepared. Five online meetings were done to know their progress. Semi structured interview was also done to collect the supporting data of deeper information needed. The result showed that use of social media especially YouTube gave high impact for the speaking ability of Non English Major students as seen from their video and deep  information from the interview. However, there were various resistance dealing with the efforts to increase their speaking ability, they are psychological factors (less motivated, not confident), environment factor (the relationship with their environment), linguistic factors (finding references, vocabulary selection, speaking style and gesture). The use of social media especially YouTube might make the students feel easier in overcoming the various resistance to improve speaking ability.Â

    The Use of Android-Based Mobile Learning Application to Comprehend Local-Based Descriptive Text

    The rapid development of technology today has greatly helped facilitate human affairs in all aspects of life, including the activities of reading. Reading is important to penetrate the world window. Through reading, knowledge and information needed can be obtained. In this era of technological advances, a shift in students' reading interest can be made through the world of the internet. This research aims to obtain a detailed description of the use of Android-based mobile learning applications in teaching reading local-based descriptive texts for SMP students. This research used descriptive-qualitative method with online interviews, observation and documentation as the research instruments. Data analysis was done based on the theory of Miles and Hubberman (1992). The result shows that in this crucial situation of pandemic Covid 19 the Android-based mobile learning applications support the online teaching and learning process of reading. The local-based descriptive text teaching materials are provided in the form of an android application of Descriptive Text. In addition, the teacher also explains the learning objectives and the steps for learning local-based descriptive texts using the Android-based mobile learning application

    An Analysis of Students’ Perception on Synchronous and Asynchronous Learning in Speaking Skill During Pandemic Covid-19

    During the pandemic Covid-19, teaching and learning system has been changed to online learning mode, especially in teaching of English as a foreign language. This paper analyzes the students’ perception toward synchronous and asynchronous learning in speaking skill during pandemic Covid-19. There were 20 students of Intensive English Class at Language Development Unit at UIN Antasari Banjarmasin which were interviewed to know their perception on the synchronous and asynchronous learning in English speaking class. The data were analyzed descriptive-qualitatively. The result found that the students felt more anxious to speak English in synchronous learning mode by using teleconference application such as zoom and Google meet than to speak in asynchronous learning mode by using video recorder

    Students’ English learning motivaton at the Tenth Grade of SMK Karsa Mulya Palangka Raya

    This study aimed to find out about the, to that related to students’ learn English motivation in the tenth grade of SMK Karsa Mulya Palangka Raya. The type of research used was a survey in research form of the quantitative method, Quantitative research, is defined as the systematic investigation of phenomena by gathering quantifiable data and performing statistical, mathematical or computational techniques. Quantitative research gathers information from existing and potential customers using sampling methods and sending out online surveys, online polls, questionnairesetc., the results of which can be depicted in the form of numerical. After careful understanding of these numbers to predict the future of a product or service and make changes accordingly. The instrument used was a questionnaire, adopted from Tomoharu Takahashi there were 34 items, which contained about motivation. The data analysis used SPSS 20.00 software. The research subjects were 135 tenth grade students of Karsa Mulya Palangka Raya Vocational High School. Based on the result of the study, it was found that: 1). Intrinsic motivation in learning English (80.2%) students like to learn English and English it is important to get a job. 2). Extrinsic motivation (74.2%) students learn English, they follow friends and follow school rules or are told by teachers to learn English

    Investigating students’ belief toward the importance of English learning for dakwah activity at IAIN Palangka Raya

    This study aims to find out students' belief in learning English as an additional tool for preaching in the national and international regions. This research uses quantitative methods with survey design. The sample of this study was the KPI study program students from the 2014 to 2018 academic year at IAIN Palangka Raya which consisted of 110 students. The data were collected by using questionnaire. In analyzing data, several procedures are used such as collecting, reducing, displaying, and summarizing data. The final result of all these categories is 77.2% and is categorized Agree that students' belief in the importance of positive English learning is high (rxy = 0.444> rtable = 0.05 at 5%). Therefore, the final result found by researchers is that they agree on the importance of learning English is to a dakwah tool in Islamic broadcasting and communication

    The effect of Lyricstraining on students’ speaking ability

    This research was aim at finding the significant effect of using Lyricstraining on students’ speaking ability in Speaking 3 course of English Education Study Program of the University of Palangka Raya. The research was conducted by using a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test post-test design. The sample of the research was 20 Speaking 3 students of English Education Study Program of the University of Palangka Raya. The data was collected from speaking tests on three components of speaking, vocabulary, fluency, and pronunciation. Based on Standard Normal Distribution, the critical values for Z at 5% (0.05) level of significance was 1.645. Since |-3,9199303| > 1.645, and ∑R+ < ∑R- the researchers rejected the null hypothesis (Ho) and accepted an alternative hypothesis (Ha). The result was statistically at 5% significant level. Thus, there was a significant effect of using Lyricstraining on students speaking ability

    Investigating different types of EFL teacher questions as a formative assessment tool

    This research article aimed to explore the types of questions deployed by EFL teachers as a formative assessment strategy. The participants in this case study were three Indonesian EFL teachers and twenty-four students. It investigated how these teachers posed questions to benefit learning, and analyzed how students responded to represent their real thinking. The research methods used were classroom observations and interviews. The findings revealed two main points; (1) the vast majority (over 70%) of convergent questions were posed by the teachers, followed by less than 20% of divergent questions and procedural questions, (2) individual answer and the choral answer made up the largest proportion (more than 40%), followed by a small minority (less than 10%) of no answer and teacher answer. The extent to which teacher questions benefited learning and in what way students' answers represented their real thinking was also discussed. The implications of this study were to provide practical insight to EFL teachers into how to develop questions as a formative assessment strategy and to inform EFL teachers with some suggestions to carry out effective questions to stimulate learners' real thinking
