This small number of learners maintained the effectiveness of classroom activity. The learners worked in a group of three learners developed a paragraph using a collaborative strategy. At the end of the class, the lecturer asked the learners to answer a questionnaire and an interview to get data about the students’ perception of the implementation of collaborative writing in small groups. The learners’ answered were analyzed and described. Learners' reactions to the collaborative writing experience mostly were positive. The learners said that in collaboration, the learners discussed and shared ideas among the member of the group that helped them to gather more idea and knowledge for their writing. Besides, they mentioned that they increased the grammatical and lexical accuracy of their paragraph. On the other sides, there were five learners who have different perceptions for some reasons; felt shy to deliver their idea, lack of English competence, time-consuming, and prefer to have individual work. Critical thinking (CT) skill in reading class
Critical thinking (CT) skill is one of the important skills for the 21st century. According to Vdovina (2013), Critical thinking is associated with thinking quality and, if sufficiently developed, provides learners with a more skillful way of communicating with other people, acquiring new knowledge, and dealing with ideas, beliefs, and attitudes. According to Fahim and Aghaalikhani (2014), by utilizing critical thinking skills, students can use the intellectual tools that critical thinking offers – concepts and principles that enable them to analyze, assess, and improve thinking. They will be able to work diligently to develop the intellectual virtues of intellectual integrity, intellectual humility, intellectual civility, intellectual empathy, intellectual sense of justice and confidence in reason. Fahim and Aghaalikhani (2014) further state that in order to maximize the teaching of critical thinking, critical thinking should be integrated into the process of English Language Teaching (ELT), specifically, in reading skill. Since the teachers are those who are responsible for making the students successful in the classroom, they need to know critical thinking skill. Therefore, this paper aims at sharing ideas about the designs of questions in enhancing critical thinking using Bloom’s taxonomy and Socratic questions (Paul’s taxonomy of Socratic questions)
Preventing negative effects of using technology in English teaching material by integrating local wisdom
Beginning the 21st century, it means getting into the globalization era. The information will be easy to access from home by using technology. What is happening on the other side of the world, can be quickly known in other parts. Gates between nations are widely open with no barrier. The diversity of the nation’s cultures is gradually melted. This is called by John Nesbit as Global Life Styles. English as an international language is an inseparable dimension of globalization using technology. The field of the ELT material has been deeply pervaded by the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) use. The easy access to technology has made information possible for enhancement of teaching and learning program and about 80% of it is in English (MC – Crum. R. et al., 1986). Some of the technology used in ELT classroom as suggested are Computer-Mediated English, Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Web-Based Learning, E-mail, Blogs, Skype, Mobile Phones, I pods, Social Media, the media live streaming such as Google Chrome, etc. However, the use of technology itself has negative sides from the point of view of the native country from its local wisdom. Information that is not filtered properly, potentially causes negative behavior change. The existence of local values which are threatened by the massive wave of global culture is the existence of local wisdom. Therefore, the use of technology in the ELT material as an open door of the massive wave needs the demand of the filter existence of integrating local wisdom.Â

Through One Way ANOVA formula analysis by using test, questionnaire & observation checklist as the instruments of collecting the data needed, the result found that the guided questions technique is having a significant effect in improving students’ writing fluency
Correlation between students’ L1 frequency use and their L2 speaking ability scores
The purpose of this study was to find out the correlation between students’ L1 frequency use and their L2 speaking ability scores in speaking class. The researcher took a class of 3th-semester students of English department at IAIN Palangka Raya of 2016/2017 year. The researcher used correlation design with quantitative approach. For the instrument, the researcher used the questionnaire and students’ speaking test. The researcher used inter-rater reliability to measure the reliability of the test instrument with the speaking lecturer as the second rater. In measuring the correlation, the researcher took a theory of Pearson Product Moment which calculated by SPSS program. The finding of this research showed the result of r calculation for students’ L1 frequency use and their speaking test is -.220. Based on the table of interpretation of r value, the result of r calculated (-.220). This value shows that there is a negative correlation. From the significance (2 tailed), the researcher gets the score .301. It means r>0.05 which showed Ho cannot be rejected. The result explained that there is no correlation between two variables, students’ L1 frequency use and their L2 speaking ability scores of 3th semester students of English Department at IAIN Palangka Raya
