    Teaching English pronunciation through international phonetic alphabet symbol at MAN - 1 Murung Raya

    This study is intended to help the teachers in teaching learning process particularly for English pronunciation. It is the most important component to get English speaking fluently. Therefore, all the students who learn English language must master the pronunciation. In Indonesia, most of the students from Senior high school or Islamic High School get trouble in learning and practicing English pronunciation. For that reason, the writer tries to solve those problems with this study. The study of the pronunciation of words is part of the field of phonetics. Phonetics is special symbols to represent each different speech sound. It is spelling system that closely matches the sounds represented. It is also said that phonetics is the study of speech sounds and how they are produced. This study explains why English pronunciation is very difficult to be learned especially for Indonesian students and how the English sounds are produced. This study uses descriptive analysis methodology. The result of the study is by learning pronunciation through International Phonetic Alphabet or IPA symbol, the students will get not only the same pronunciation with American English speakers but also British English speakers. The students who know the IPA will know how to pronounce any words in English

    Possibilities of coping with literalness with the literal method in translation

    This article compares and contrasts the main features of literalness and literal method and possibilities of coping with literalness. The comparison is carried out along the following lines: (1) historical and empirical roots of both concepts, (2) premises underlying literalness and literal method, (3) evidence in support literalness and literal method, and (4) expectations associated the concepts. The main outcome of this comparison is a conclusion that both terms belong to one family of translation study. Because literalness has been around much practice in translation, it makes sense for the proponents of the literal method to consider both the accomplishments and frustrations that have accumulated in literalness

    Extrovert and introvert students in speaking ability of English department at IAIN Palangka Raya

    This study was aimed at investigating whether there is a significant difference between extrovert and introvert students in the speaking ability of the English Department at IAIN Palangka Raya. This study belongs to ex post facto design with quantitative approach. For the data collection, there were questionnaire and documentation as the instruments. The questionnaire was adapted from the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) which categorized the students into introvert and extrovert. The population of this study was the students in the academic year 2014-2016 who programmed Speaking For Everyday Communication of English Department at IAIN Palangka Raya, with a sample of 82 students. There were 43 extrovert and 39 introverts. The result found that; The calculation between extrovert and introvert students by using independent sample t-test showed that the value of tobserved was 8.925. It is higher than ttable 1.99at 5% and 2.64 at 1% significance level. It can be known that tobserved is greater than ttable (1.99<8.925>2.64). Based on the result of the study, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. In conclusion, there is significant difference between extrovert and introvert students in the speaking ability of the English Department at IAIN Palangka Raya.Â

    Board race to boost students’ vocabulary mastery

    Vocabulary is one of the English components that should be taught by the learners because it has the main role in all languages. To understand English words and their meanings the learners must also know how the words work together in a good sentence. It can be concluded that in teaching vocabulary not only give the meaning of the word but also teach how the word works in the sentence. The objectives of this research are to know whether there is the significant and positive influence of using board race towards students’ vocabulary mastery at Civil Engineering study program at Muhammadiyah University of Metro academic year 2017/2018. The kind of this research is quasi-experimental design. The researcher took 2 classes in the first semester and the number of the students are 31 as the experiment class and 31 are included as control class which is taken by using simple random sampling. In collecting the data, the researcher uses pre-test and post-test. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses a non-parametric formula. After analyzing the result of data by using non-parametric formula, the researcher gets the result of tcount is 3,09 and ttable 2,00 (on criterion 1) and 2,69 (on criterion 2). It means that tcount > ttable, then the criterion of tcount is Ha is accepted if tcount > ttable. So, there is significant influence of using board race game towards students’ vocabulary mastery at Civil Engineering Students in Muhammadiyah University of Metro academic year 2017/2018

    The purpose of this article was to discuss finding the topic and the main idea. Reading power is intended for students of English as a second language. In this article the four parts must be used concurrently since each part focuses on a different aspect of reading instruction; Those parts are topics, topics of conversations, topics of paragraphs, and main ideas. Reading is important when you are learning a new language because reading helps you learn to think in the new language, reading helps you build a better vocabulary, reading makes you more comfortable with written English you can write better English if you feel comfortable with the language, reading may be the only way for you to use English if you live in a non-English speaking country, and reading can help if you plan to study in an English speaking country. Reading comprehension involves specific thinking processes. These are designed to provide focused instruction in the reading skills based on these processes. Greater awareness of the relation between cognitive process and reading skills will help you apply the skills when you are reading.Â

    Conversational implicature in junior high school textbooks

    Textbooks in the EFL classroom play role as the material content provider. They often present formal and well-structured pattern of standardized English since texts, dialogues, and other aspects of content tend to be specially written to corporate teaching points. This research is conducted to examine the content of textbooks, particularly the short conversations found in English textbooks used by the seventh and eighth grades of junior high school students in Palangka Raya based on pragmatics point of view. It observes whether the conversations found in junior high school textbooks may contain more examples of conversation following Grice’s cooperative principle/maxim, or tend to have more examples conveying conversational implicatures on them. The result of the analysis shows that out of 33 data, there are 8 (24.2%) conversations which obey Grice’s cooperative principle by applying one or more maxims, whereas the other 25 ones (75.8%) have implicatures embedded in the conversations with their various contextual meanings and different types of conversational implicatures. The discussion in this research article also deals with the result of the research and its relation to the EFL teaching-learning context

    In the year 2000s, the digital revolution has spread throughout the world, whereby mobile phones have become very common, and there was an increase in the number of Internet users. With the digital revolution, technology-based activities are immersed in our daily lives. Educational digital technology is not spared too. 21st century sees a paradigm shift and advancement in educational digital technology. In order to adapt to the fast changing environment, teaching and learning have to change too. Teachers are no more authoritative knowledge providers but facilitators and mentors preparing their students for the technological real world. Taking the first step to learn and be adept at using digital technology should be their priority. Integrating digital technology effectively in the classroom will create a positive and vibrant learning environment. At the same time, students need to be empowered to use digital equipment wisely to seek for knowledge, check for its authenticity, and share with their peers. These are to prepare them to face their working lives, which require them to be able to use varieties of digital tools and equipment. Thus, teachers as well as students need to be aware of their respective roles in making digital education a success

    Students’ needs analysis in English speaking for everyday communication at State Islamic Institute of Palangka Raya

    This study is aimed to know students’ needs in English speaking for everyday communication at second-semester of English study program at IAIN Palangka Raya. The type of study was qualitative. The data is taken from the questionnaire, interview, and analysis of speaking videos. Those data were aimed at gathering information related to the lacks, target, and wants. The result found that, from the lacks: the students often have trouble in oral presentation, the student’s low vocabulary mastery, there were some mistakes in their grammar, the students were often afraid to speak because they were worried about making mistakes, from the necessities; the students have to learn how to communicate on the level of everyday communication, the students are able to pronounce the words correctly, the students are able to apply the proper grammar in communication, from the wants; the students will use English speaking for higher education, the students strongly disagree with the opinion of removing the course from university curriculum, they thought bad English proficiency determine a bad effect on the academic performance, they like pair or group project, they prefer for working in pair or groups, and the students want the teacher as the facilitator and guide

    Considering portfolio as a students’ assessment in learning

    Portfolio as an alternative authentic assessment is more revealing of the students’ capability to see possibilities for reflection, redirection, and confirmation of the students’ own learning efforts. As it covers various aspects of students’ capability, it might be more preferable for the final evaluation of their achievement in learning. Results of the portfolio might also help teachers get feedback in education process they are conducting

    Correlation among vocabulary size, English structure and reading comprehension scores of EFL students

    The purpose of this research is to find out the correlation among vocabulary size, structure and reading comprehension. This research applied quantitative and used correlation design. The population of this research was the first semester students of English Education Study Program at IAIN Palangka Raya on Academic Year 2016. Cluster sampling was used to gain the sample and 64 students were as the sample of this research. The instrument that used was a test. After the calculation, the result showed that Fobserved is higher than Ftable (4.407 > 3.15) so there was a positive correlation among vocabulary size, English structure and reading comprehension scores of EFL students of English Education Study Program at IAIN Palangka Raya. It meant that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) which stated that there was a correlation among vocabulary size, English structure, and reading comprehension scores of EFL students at IAIN Palangka Raya was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) which stated that there was no correlation among vocabulary size, English structure and reading comprehension scores of EFL students at IAIN Palangka Raya was rejected
