Periodontal therapy in orthodontics- A case series
Interdisciplinary approach helps the specialists of contributing disciplines immensely in diagnosis, treatment planning, execution of planned treatment and problem solving for any untoward complication. Orthodontic treatment may be adjunctive to periodontal therapy or vice versa. Periodontal problems might lead to occlusal abnormalities which may require orthodontic correction. Also orthodontic treatment of adult patients is most frequently just one component of a more complex treatment involving several dental disciplines. Various orthodontic treatments also may precipitate some periodontal problems which frequently require periodontal management. This report discusses, through representative cases, potential periodontal problems and their management encountered before, during and after orthodontic treatment
Functional and Aesthetic Rehabilitation for a Patient with Multiple Impacted Teeth, Not Associated With Any Syndromes
Aesthetic rehabilitation is always a challenge, and implants play a major role in this. In this article aesthetic and functional rehabilitation was done for a 21 year-old female presented with poor aesthetic smile due to retained deciduous teeth, gummy smile, malformed permanent teeth, and multiple impacted teeth with no correlation with any syndrome. Crown lengthening, gingival reposition and implant supported fixed partial denture restored functional and aesthetics and improved patient’s self-confidence
Posturedontics–Focus on Health Among Dental Professionals
Many dentists, hygienists and assistants report they did notreceive adequate ergonomics education in school. This can lead to costly investment in non-ergonomic dental equipment, poor positioning techniques, and generic exercise that can actually worsen their health. Posturedontics is a way to work smarter not harder by designing tools, equipment, work stations, and tasks to fit the job to the worker – NOT the worker to the job. It is a discipline that studies workers and their relationship to occupational environment. The purpose of this article includes many different concepts such as how dentists position themselves and their patients, how they utilize equipment, how work areas are designed and finally how all of these impact the health of dentists. Good working ergonomics is essential so that work capability, efficiency and high clinical level of treatment can be maintained throughout the working life of dental professionals. The scope of posturedontics is large
Irrigation In Revision
Successful root canal therapy depends on the combinations of proper instrumentation, irrigation and obturation of root canal. Of these essential steps of root canal therapy, irrigation is one of the most important factor in the healing of the periapical tissues. Microorganisms are essential in the development of periradicular diseases and are the major causative factors associated with endodontic treatment failures. Several studies using advanced techniques have demonstrated that proportionally large areas of the root-canal wall remain untouched by the instruments, emphasizing the importance of chemical means of cleaning and disinfecting all areas of the root canal. There is no single irrigating solution that alone sufficiently covers all of the functions required from an irrigant. Optimal irrigation is based on the combined use of 2 or several irrigating solutions, in a specific sequence, to predictably obtain the goals of safe and effective irrigation. In this review of literature various irrigants and how effective they are in eliminating the microorganisms specially in the failed root canal cases has been discussed
Named Cells and Bodies in Oral Pathology - Part I: A Ready Reckoner
Oral pathology is a visual speciality which navigates a pathologist in the arena of micro details amidst complex tissues. At times we get stuck or entrapped in a state of flux when we come across certain pathological cells or bodies as our eyes are more conditioned viewing at normal morphology of cell & structures. Although they may be deceptive in their appearance, at the same time aids the pathologist in diagnosis as they are pathognomonic of certain diseases & conditions. For the ease of description, this article has been split into two parts. Part I provides an overview of various pathological cells and bodies pertaining to diseases, metabolic disorders and neoplasm’s reflecting its significance in Oral Pathology. Besides being an instant reckoner to the student population, it aids in diagnosing different pathological conditions
Agenesis of Bilateral Primary Maxillary Lateral Incisors and Their Successors : A Rare Case report
Hypodontia is the term used to describe the developmental absence of one or more primary or permanent teeth, excluding the third molars. Hypodontia is relatively uncommon in primary dentition. It has a prevalence of 0.1%-0.9% in the primary dentition. Hypodontia can occur as an isolated or non-syndromic form and it can occur in association with various syndromes/systemic disorders. The exact etiology of hypodontia is not known. The absence of teeth in young patients can cause esthetic, functional and psychological problems particularly if the teeth of the anterior region are involved. The present article reports a rare case of non-syndromic hypodontia in a four year old female patient with agenesis of bilateral primary maxillary lateral incisors and their successors along with agenesis of unilateral permanent mandibular lateral incisor
Effect of oral health education on the knowledge, attitude and behavior regarding oral health among school children in Bengaluru, India.
Introduction Poor oral health in children can affect growth and school attendance; can lead to medical complications of untreated disease, and result in poor social outcomes. Materials and methods A closed ended questionnaire consisting of 10 questions was used to assess the effect of oral health education on the knowledge, attitude and behavior of school children. Oral health education was delivered through tailor made power point presentation after assessing the knowledge, attitude and behavior of students towards oral health at the baseline. After 6 months the knowledge, attitude and behavior of students was assessed with the help of the same questionnaire. Results A total of 503 school children aged 12-16 years participated in the present study. It was found that at the baseline, 79 (15.7%) participants were brushing once daily, 408 (81.1%) of them twice daily, 10 (2%) of them thrice daily and 6 (1.2%) of them occasionally whereas after oral health education, 14 (2.8%) of them were brushing once daily, 488 (97%) of them twice daily and none of them brushing thrice daily and occasionally (p=0.004**). At the baseline 378 (75.1%) participants were rinsing their mouth after every meal and 125 (24.9%) of them were not practicing the same whereas after oral health education 492 (97.8%) were rinsing their mouth after every meal. Conclusions The oral health education program resulted in significantly increased oral health knowledge, attitude and behavior among school children.
Malignant Tumours of Salivary gland –A Review
About 50% of all minor salivary gland tumours are malignant. The principle site for malignant tumours was the minor salivary gland (50.8%) followed by parotid gland (30.8%), sub-mandibular gland(15.4%) and the sub-lingual gland(3%). It is highly probable that proportion of malignant salivary tumour will increase further ,due to intense solar radiation over long period of time. Treatment of malignant salivary gland tumours with the addition of post-operative radiation therapy for patients with high risk factors has shown to reduce the incidence of local failure of treatment, and thereby preventing recurrence. The incidence of local recurrence was 14% for patients who received post-operative radiation therapy and 54% for who did not
Homeopathy As Holistic Alternative Therapy In Periodontal Patients
AIMS & OBJECTIVE To analyze whether homeopathy can prove as a holistic and alternative form of therapy in periodontal patients. METHOD Sixty patients with periodontal complaints of either gingival swelling, gingival bleeding, halitosis, mobile teeth, receding gingiva, abscess or lichen planus were considered. These patients were divided into a control group and a study group. The control group patients received only supragingival scaling as treatment modality. The study group patients were treated with supragingival scaling and were administered homeopathic medicines as a holistic and alternative form of therapy. Their response towards homeopathic treatment was observed after 6 weeks. RESULT It was observed that seventy six percent of the patients who were administered homeopathic medicine were benefitted by it whereas only forty one percent of the patients were benefitted when they were treated with supragingival scaling alone. Gingivitis patients who had come with complaints of gingival swelling, bleeding and halitosis, patients with periodontal abscess were and lichen planus patients were the ones who benefitted the most from homeopathic treatment. CONCLUSION Homeopathic medicines do not replace good dental or periodontal care but complement it. Homeopathy also offers specific medicines that can be invaluable in reducing dental pain and alleviating periodontal/dental disease. Key Words: Gingivitis, Holistic, Constitutional Prescribing, Pathological Prescribin
Evaluation of Crestal Bone Loss in Single Tooth Posterior Implant Restorations – A Cohort Study
Abstract: Aims & Objectives: To evaluate the success rate and crestal bone loss around single tooth dental implant restorations in the posterior region. Materials and Method: 55 implants placed in 55 patients were observed for this study. All implants were restored by metal ceramic crowns. Patients were followed up for 2 years. Radiographic and clinical evaluations were done at the 1 and 2 year recall appointment after implant placement. Results: Implants showed 100% survival rate. There was statistically significant bone loss during the first year and no significant crestal bone loss between first and second year. It was also observed that the mandibular restorations showed lesser bone loss than the maxillary restorations. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that majority of the crestal bone loss around posterior implants occur within the first year and the bone loss becomes stabilized then after.
