    Natal teeth in a premature baby: A case report and review of literature

    The shortened dental arch concept and its relevance for oral health care in developing countries

     AbstractThe aim of this paper is to outline the possible role of shortened dental arch concept for dental care in developing countries. The concept aims to reduce complex restorative treatment in molar areas by removal of seriously involved molars, and by not replacing the absent molars. In this paper, firstly, developments of occlusal concepts are considered.  Secondly, studies in industrialized countries with respect to oral function in shortened dental arches are reviewed. Thirdly, main results of cross sectional studies on shortened dental arches in Tanzania, a developing country, are described. It is concluded that the shortened dental arch concept fits well in the current occlusal concepts and shortened dental arches comprising anterior teeth and premolars can meet oral functional requirements for populations in industrialized countries as well as in Tanzania. Although Tanzania can not be representative for developing countries in all aspects, it is suggested that the shortened dental arch concept is relevant for developing countries as it offers a functional approach at a reduced cost without compromising patient’s oral health care. For strengthening the basis of implementing the concept in developing countries, further studies on oral function in reduced dentitions for people developing countries are recommended.&nbsp

    Hybrid fixed functional appliances has gained the popularity for growth modification in noncompliant patients. But for this, clinicians have to depend on certain commercially available appliances. Additionally, these appliances have less scope in changing their length as per patient’s requirement of particular mandibular advancement. This article explains the chair-side fabrication of open coil NiTi spring loaded hybrid type fixed functional appliance. This custom made tinier and hygienic design provide stable fixation, less breakages with increased range of mandibular movement involving unrestricted mouth opening.     The Effect of Four Endodontic Irrigants on the Shear Bond Strength of a Self Etch Resin Based Sealer to Dentin - An In Vitro Study

    This in vitro study was undertaken  to evaluate the effect of four different irrigants namely Sodium hypochlorite, Chlorhexidine, Triphala and Morinda citrifolia on the shear bond strength of a self etch sealer, RealSeal SE to dentin by using EDTA as the final wash  as well as without EDTA as the final wash. The  bond strength was evaluated in shear mode by using a Universal testing machine. Methods: The study was done using 120 extracted human molars. A low speed diamond disk saw with water coolant was used to slice off the occlusal 2mm of the samples whereby a flat dentinal surface surrounded by a thin rim of enamel was obtained. This section of tooth, was embedded in a self cure acrylic resin. A smear layer was created on the sectioned teeth using a 320 grit silicon carbide paper attached to the Handimet grinder (Buehler,Ltd)  under  water irrigation for a time period of 15 seconds. The dentin disks with the smear layer were then randomly divided into 2 groups namely Group I-without EDTA and Group II-with EDTA.  Each of the Group was further divided into four Subgroups namely Sodium hypochlorite, Morinda citrifolia, Triphala and Chlorhexidine respectively. The dentin discs were then air dried using a air-water syringe. A brass tube was placed onto the dentin surface and was filled with the sealer RealSeal SE, which was mixed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The sealer was then light cured for 40 seconds and then allowed to set for 45minutes. The samples were then immediately stored in a closed container containing distilled water at 37oC and maintained at 100% humidity for 7 days. Each specimen was evaluated for its shear bond strength value at a cross head speed of 1mm/minute. The shear force required to separate the cylinder from dentin for each specimen was recorded in Newtons (N), then divided by the contact surface area to determine the shear bond strength in Megapascals. Results: The results revealed that Subgroup Sodium hypochlorite had the highest shear bond strength in Group I and Group II  followed in order by Subgroups Morinda citrifolia, Triphala and Chlorhexidine in both groups. Conclusion: Morinda citrifolia and Triphala can be used as a better  alternative to Chlorhexidine

    Mucous Metaplasia in a Radicular Cyst Lining – An Update and a Case Report

    Radicular cyst is the most common inflammatory cyst in the oral cavity. Approximately, 40% of non-keratinizing odontogenic cysts show mucous metaplasia in their linings.  A case of radicular cyst with mucous metaplasia is presented with a description of the phenomenon of metaplasia and the mechanism of cholesterol cleft formation. The cystic fluid in the radicular cyst exhibits a variety of substances which may contribute to the pathogenesis of the cyst. The composition of the cyst fluid is described briefly.   Radicular cysts also occur in primary dentition, accounting for 0.5-33% of the total number of cases. Differences between the radicular cysts arising from primary and permanent dentitions are considered. Certain immunochemical markers which play a key role in understanding the pathogenesis of the cyst are highlighted

    Atypical Extractions in Orthodontics – A Case report

    AIMS & OBJECTIVES:                    One of the most common mal-occlusions to be encountered is crowding. The area that is most commonly affected by this ailment is the mandibular anterior region. Conventional extractions of first or second premolars are sometimes not able to fulfill all the goals and objectives required in a particular case. In such scenario, atypical extractions of other teeth, for instance mandibular central incisors may be employed to meet the treatment objectives. CASE DESCRIPTION:                    Following presentation encloses a case report in which atypical extractions were carried out. The case presented with moderate mandibular crowding in the anterior region, which was treated with the extraction of a single mandibular incisor. A good sagittal relationship was established at the end of the treatment. CONCLUSION: It is emphasized that the orthodontic treatment may become relatively less time consuming, by following this approach in selected cases. Careful torque control of all mandibular teeth, particularly the canines, is required throughout the treatment period. &nbsp

    Prosthesis for a Case of Subtotal Orbital Exenteration

    Aims and objectives: To rehabilitate a patient with subtotal orbital exenteration defect. Case description: A 32 year old male with history of carcinoma of ethmoid, treated surgically with subtotal orbital exenteration presented with a defect communicating with the pharynx. He was rehabilitated with a prosthetic eye. Conclusion: A two piece cast with a removable part containing the defect made it very easy to fabricate the prosthesis. Patient was happy with the appearance and expressed satisfaction.&nbsp
