Acupuncture in the Management of Orofacial Pain and Related Disorders: A Review
Oro-facial pain and temperomandibular dysfunction are deemed upon as multifaceted problems and can pose major therapeutic problem in dealing with them. Evidence from clinical studies suggests that acupuncture may be useful in the treatment of orofacial pain, temperomandibular dysfunction and related disorders otherwise resistant to conventional treatment modalities. Acupuncture is an ancient healing technique that has regained its lost popularity in the last two decades. The present paper attempts to review this forbidden procedure and its role in improving the quality of dental care provided to the patients especially in the management of orofacial pain, temperomandibular dysfunction, dental anxiety, gag reflex, xerostomia and trigeminal neuralgia.  
Mixed Dentition Analysis among a Nigerian Population
Mixed dentition space analysis forms an important aspect of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. A commonly used method involves the use of regression equations to predict the sizes of the unerupted canines and premolars. The objective of this study was therefore to evaluate the accuracy of the Tanaka and Johnston tooth size prediction equations in a Nigerian population. Methodology Mesiodistal tooth widths of teeth from 150 pairs of dental casts, obtained from junior secondary school children (88 females, 62 males) aged between 12 and 16 years old were measured with a digital caliper. The mean sum of the four mandibular incisors was then used to predict the sum of the canines and premolars in one quadrant, using the Tanaka and Johnston equations. These predicted values were then compared statistically with their respective actual measurements from the casts. Results. Results indicated that statistically significant differences (p˂0.05) exist between the actual measurements (Σ 345) and their predicted sizes using the Tanaka Johnston tooth size prediction equations. New prediction equations were therefore formulated for use on Nigerians. Conclusion. The Tanaka and Johnston tooth size prediction equation cannot be used for Nigerians
An exploration of approaches and difficulties in prevention of dental diseases in Saudi Arabia.
Aim: Dental caries and periodontitis are the most common oral diseases in Saudi Arabia. Oral health awareness is very low and prevention of oral diseases is not a high priority in this region. A national survey was conducted to assess the dentists’ attitudes and challenges in implementation of preventive dental programmes in Saudi Arabia.Materials and methods: A questionnaire based national cross- sectional survey among 500 dentists was conducted under the auspices of Directorate of Dentistry, Ministry of Health. The data was analyzed using Microsoft excel 2010 program and descriptive statistics were obtained.Results: The response rate was 87.8% (n=439). 72.4% believed that preventive dental services are beneficial, social factors (62.5%) are the most challenging factors in implementing preventive dental programs, followed by inadequate work force (41.6%), 64% felt dental auxiliaries are important, 68.35% felt mobile dental units play active role in providing on-site preventive treatments and 95.4% felt the need for receiving regular updates on preventive dentistry.Conclusion: Dentists’ attitudes and challenges in implementation of preventive dental programs were identified. The survey highlighted the need for implementation of extensive and continuous community oral health education programmes in KSA
Influence of drugs on orthodontic tooth movement: A review
The purpose of this review is to summarize the effects of some commonly used drugs on tissue remodeling and orthodontic tooth movement. A thorough knowledge about the drugs is therefore mandatory for the orthodontist dealing with patients under orthodontic treatment
Dento-Alveolar Distraction Osteogenesis for Rapid Orthodontic Treatment- A Case Report
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the rate of canine distalization by segmental alveolar distraction method in first premolar extraction case, to evaluate the displacement of the canine and first molar teeth, to assess the effects of the procedure on the pulpal vitality of the canines, and to determine the amount of root resorption in retracted canines. Pre- and post-treatment dental casts, panoramic radiographs, and standard periapical radiographs were taken. An electrical vitality test was applied before and after the distraction procedure and during the follow-up period. The distraction procedure was completed in 12 to 16 days. There was no anchorage loss. No clinical and radiographic evidence of complications such as root resorption, ankylosis, periodontal problems, and soft tissue dehiscence, was observed. Patients had minimal to moderate discomfort after the surgery and vitality of canine maintained.  
Perspective of Diabetes Mellitus in dentistry
Diabetes mellitus is a common medical disorder that is usually encountered by every clinical dental practitioner. Knowledge by the dentist of the general and oral signs and symptoms of undiagnosed or poorly controlled diabetes mellitus are essential, and patients displaying these signs or symptoms should receive medical referral. Patients suspected, or known to suffer from undiagnosed or uncontrolled diabetes mellitus should receive only emergency care until their health status has been properly evaluated. The research on the links between periodontal disease and diabetes appears to have limited impact on the organization of diabetes care, and the divisions that exist between the medical and dental professions have the potential to negatively impact on patient care
Rehabilitation Of A Patient Having Few Natural Teeth With Maxillary Overdenture –A Clinical Report
The over denture, a complete or partial denture prosthesis constructed over existing teeth or root structure is not a new concept in a technical approach to a prosthodontic problem. Today with the stress on preventive measures in prosthodontics, the use of over dentures has increased to the point where it is feasible alternative to most treatment plan outlines in the construction of a prosthesis for patients with remaining teeth. Here a 54 years male patient is rehabilitated with fabrication of maxillary over denture with copings and mandibular removable complete denture. Micro-implants for Orthodontic Anchorage – A Review
Orthodontic treatment has become increasingly popular in all ages and the demand is expected to grow in the future. Anchorage is a critical factor that determines the success of orthodontic treatment. In the past decades, micro implants have been used in orthodontics for anchorage and has been documented to have promising results. Micro implants provide absolute anchorage which results in the desired tooth movement and minimize undesirable effects. The purpose of this article is to review and update current concepts of using dental implants for orthodontic anchorage. 
Probiotics in dentistry: Review of the current status
Probiotics have been found to be beneficial to host health. In medicine, probiotics are used mainly in support therapy for gastro-intestinal diseases. In recent years, probiotics have been used as a treatment to promote oral health. There has also been a change in understanding of the oral disease process because of better understanding of the ecology and microbiology of the oral cavity. Very encouraging studies exploring probiotics in the fields of caries, periodontal diseases and few other areas have come up in the recent past and the results tend to suggest beneficial effects of probiotics on oral health and on the whole body in general. Extensive research to create a probiotic product intended to maintain dental and periodontal health is needed. This article reviews the role of probiotics in dental caries and periodontal disease
A Comparative Study of Primary Versus Secondary Closure After Removal of Lower Third Molar
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to clinically compare the post-operative sequelae of wound healing and patient response after primary and secondary closure. The effectiveness of the technique was evaluated relative to the degree of patient comfort and the post-operative condition of the surgical site. Method: This prospective study was conducted on 50 patients. The patients were selected randomly from the outpatient department needing surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars. The patients were then randomly allocated to any of the two groups- the primary closure and the secondary closure group. In the primary closure group, after removal of third molar flap was hermetically sutured and in secondary closure group, a wedge of mucosa of 5-6 mm was removed distal to second molar for secondary healing. Maximum mouth opening and facial swelling were measured at preoperatively, 6 hours and at days 2, 4and 7 postoperatively. Pain was objectively measured using a visual analogue scale at above time points. The data collected was subjected to students unpaired‘t’- test. Results: The secondary closure of the wound proved more successful in preventing post-surgical sequelae of impacted third molar removal. Post-operative analysis showed increased amount of swelling, pain and trismus in primary closure group as compare to secondary closure group and the difference was statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the secondary healing after impacted lower third molar removal may have considerable contributions to reduce the post-operative swelling, pain and trismus
