    No full text
Early detection of oral diseases makes them more amenable to treatment and allows thegreatest chance of cure. Delay in presentation and/or referral has a significant effect on theassociated morbidity and mortality. Lack of general medical practitioner’s knowledge of oraldisease has been shown to contribute to delays in referral and treatment. The present study wasundertaken to assess knowledge, attitude and practice of dental awareness among medicalpractitioners in Sangamner city, Maharashtra, India. The present study is Cross-sectional surveyconducted among the medical practitioner in Sangamner city, Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra,India. 100 medical practitioners from 4 different zones (25 from each zone) were randomly selectedfor the present study. The data pertaining to their knowledge, attitude and practice about oralhealth was gathered using a self administered questionnaire. The data was analyzed usingdescriptive statistics. Results: Majority of the medical practitioners were not aware that, Caries is infectious andtransmissible from mother to child, OSMF as a precancerous and had inadequate knowledgeabout oral health’s relation with other parts of body.KEYWORDS: Medical practitioner, attitude, knowledg

Do we care about iatrogenic damage? A wakeup call for periodontists

    No full text
The dentist may be incriminated in perpetuating periodontal disease by injudicious dental therapy, which is called iatrogenic damage and factors responsible are called iatrogenic factors. We need to address this serious matter and sensitize dental professionals to respect periodontal structures, as these cases are too many.Any dental treatment during any phase can become iatrogenic, if periodontal health is not considered, like irreversible damage caused by biologic width violation, margin placement, occlusal instability. Restorations and prostheses create potential for qualitative changes in plaque. Orthodontic therapy may affect periodontium by favoring plaque accumulation, injuring gingiva with overextended bands and unfavorable forces. Sadly, it is always a patient who suffers physically, emotionally and financially in the end. This article presents series of such case reports attended at Dept. of Periodontics, Sri Siddhartha dental college, Tumkur (Karnataka, India).Key Words: Iatrogenic, Occlusal overload, plaque retentive factor

Evaluation of Bolton’s tooth width ratios in crowded and non-crowded dentitions in Class I and Class II skeletal bases among the South Indian population: An In-Vitro Study

Discrepancies in tooth width ratios could affect the excellence in the finishing of orthodontic cases. The aim of this study was to evaluate Bolton’s tooth width ratios in crowded and non-crowded dentitions in Class I and Class II skeletal bases among the  South Indian  population and discuss the clinical implications of the possible differences.Hundred  and twenty upper and lower patient dental casts  were grouped into four according to the presence of crowding and sex . Carey’s Arch perimeter analysis was done. Tooth width ratios were calculated in the four groups using formulas proposed by Bolton.  The results suggested that not much of statistical difference was observed among class I and class II patients, and between crowded and non crowded dentitions in the males and females, although there was a moderate significance between class I and class II skeletal bases in the anterior ratio in males. In the crowded dentition, the teeth had larger mesiodistal diameters when compared to that of the non-crowded dentition. The mean anterior and overall ratio for the crowded dentition in the South Indian population was 78.5% and 90.67% respectively.  The same for the non-crowded dentition was 78.27% & 91% respectively.  &nbsp

Apexification And Apexogenesis- A Case Report

Trauma causing various degrees of suffering of tooth is one of the disturbing conditions for children and parents. Consideration of various factors that decide the final outcomes in a positive way is of prime importance. For children incompletely formed apex poses a significant problem during management. As a choice apexification and apexogenesis are the indispensable treatment modalities. Present case came with fractured maxillary central incisors with pulp exposure. The case was managed with apexogenesis as a primary mode of treatment before considering apexification. The child was treated with calcium hydroxide for both apexogenesis and apexification. Materials of choice and management are discussed.Key Words: Apexification, Apexogenesis, Calcium hydroxide

Instrument sterilization in the orthodontic clinic: A review

    Get PDF
The implementation and execution of effective infection control protocols among all health care communities including our own is vital considering the challenge that infectious agents pose against us, as well as their nature to continuously evolve in real time. Against this backdrop; various sterilization protocols are reviewed concomitantly with relevant scientific data from the orthodontic community as well as outside; evaluating numerous factors deemed critical from an orthodontic standpoint. It is hoped that these reviews would facilitate the discerning orthodontist in us to make an informed decision towards their implementation in the orthodontic office. This article offers practical guidelines and recommendations for effective sterilization in the orthodontic office keeping the instruments longevity in mind. Sterilization protocols are recommended for pliers, molar bands, elastomeric ligatures and chains, impressions and orthodontic appliances. Additionally a recommended sterilization protocol for the extremely stable group of infectious agents called prions is highlighted as well as its implication on instruments. Keywords: - Orthodontic instruments, Pliers, Corrosion, Sterilization

Assessment holds the key to the entire learning process. Assessment is one of the defining features of students’ approaches to learning. Types of evaluation or assessment tend to determine students’ approaches to learning. Assessment needs to be valid, reliable and reproducible. The traditional methods of assessment have been challenged. Dissatisfaction has been expressed over their validity and reliability. Several new methods and tools are now available, the use of which requires special training. The need of the hour is to adopt academic practices that are in consonance with those prevailing in the developed countries. This paper suggests an Objective structured clinical evaluation (OSCE) based assessment of three commonly performed pediatric dentistry procedures during under-graduation in India

Immunohistochemical evaluation of Bcl2 and Cytokeratin 14 and Cytokeratin 19 in Ameloblastoma

    No full text
Ameloblastoma is the most common odontogenic tumor of the jawbones, but the origin of this tumor has been remained to be unproven. Cytokeratins (CKs) are specific intermediate filament of epithelial cells, Bcl 2 is an anti apoptotic protein and is a marker of epithelial cell differentiation. The immunohistochemical detection of cytokeratins has made it easier to know the origin of tumor. Likewise, Bcl2 expression suggests the aggressive nature of Odontogenic tumour and these results will be beneficial in differential diagnosis of odontogenic  tumors and other kind of tumors arising at the oral cavity. Key words:  Ameloblastoma,  Cytokeratin ,  Bcl 2,  Odontogenic tumou

Multiple non-syndromic supplemental premolars- a case report

    No full text
Aims and objectives:The aims and objectives are to report a case of multiple supernumerary premolars, a rare developmental anomaly, particularly in a non-syndromic patient.Case description: This article reports a rare case of a 16-year old patient with multiple non-syndromic supernumerary premolars. The occurrence of multiple supernumerary premolars is more common in the mandible than in the maxilla and more so, in the males than in the females. The affected patient, a female, had a maximum number of supernumerary premolars in the maxilla making this case unusual. The case also elucidates the etiology of the supernumerary teeth, complications associated and the treatment modalities. Conclusion:The detection of multiple supernumerary teeth is usually a coincidental finding, often detected on radiographs. This case report lays stress upon the role of early detection, radiographic examination, and frequent evaluation to detect any complications which may be associated with supernumerary teeth.Key-words: supernumerary teeth, supplemental, premolar
