Silhouettes gone wrong: A tale of variations in tooth morphology
Tooth is the quintessential part of the oral cavity and can be subjected to pathologic processes during the development resulting in an anomaly pertaining to morphological variations. Embryological events during stages of tooth development are affected by genetic and environmental factors that lead to deviation.Dilaceration, talon cusp, fusion, taurodontism, concrescence and dens-evaginatus are few commonly occurring morphological variations. Each of these is described along with their clinical implications and their bearing in clinical practice.Conclusion:The knowledge of the developmental anomalies and their clinical significance attributes to the diagnostic work up and specific treatment plan
Probiotics and oral health
Probiotics have been found to be beneficial to the host health by improving the endogenous flora. Traditionally, probiotics have been associated with gastrointestinal tract, however recently several investigators have suggested use of probiotics for oral health. The aim of the present study was to review published studies regarding probiotics and their effects on oral cavity. Studies citing the use of probiotics in caries, periodontal diseases, halitosis and oral candidiasis were identified. Most authors have concluded that the use of probiotics is associated with improvement in oral health
Management of Class II div I malocclusion-A case report
Aim & Objectives of the present case report was to evaluate the management of Class II div I malocclusion in adolescent patient with extraction of premolars. Clinical & cephalometric evaluation revealed Class II div I dental pattern on Class I Skeletal relation with sever maxillary incisor proclination, convex profile, average mandibular plane angle, Protruded lower lips, incompetent lips, increased overjet & overbite, over retained upper right deciduous 2nd molar. The case was successfully managed initially by expansion of upper arch simultaneously while facilitating eruption of unerrupted right maxillary 2nd premolar by extraction of over retained upper right deciduos 2nd molar. Dental fear in children and its relation to dental caries and gingival condition – a cross sectional study in Bangalore City, India.
Aims and objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the levels of dental fear, and its association with dental caries and gingivitis among 12 – 15 year old government high school children in Bangalore City, India. Methods: Eight government high schools were selected by simple random method from the 2 zones of Bangalore City. All the children who participated in this study were asked the single item Dental Anxiety Question to assess the dental fear and underwent oral examination for dental caries and gingivitis using decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) index and Community Periodontal Index (CPI), respectively. Results: The prevalence of high dental fear among the study population was 23.4%. The mean MT was significantly associated with high fear. Highly significant correlation was found between presence of bleeding on gentle probing and high dental fear. Conclusion: High dental fear plays an important role in the oral health status of 12 to 15 year old children. 
Validity of Secondary Abutment Support for a Cantilevered Maxillary Canine Pontic -A Finite Element Analysis (In-Vitro Study).
This in-vitro study was conducted to investigate the stress distribution of three unit Cantilever fixed partial denture replacing Maxillary Canine with support of first and second premolars as primary and secondary abutments respectively, using a three dimensional finite element analysis. A three-dimensional finite element model was developed, which simulated the natural teeth, metal ceramic prosthesis, periodontal ligament, cortical and cancellous bone layers of the Maxilla. Three different simulated models were created in which the Model I had natural teeth comprising of Maxillary Canine and premolars used as a control model for the study. Model II simulated two unit porcelain fused metal cantilever fixed prosthesis supported by first premolar as abutment. Model III simulated three-unit porcelain fused metal to cantilever fixed prosthesis supported by first and second premolars as abutments. A force of 10 N was applied horizontally and vertically on all the three Models. In model II and model III loads were applied separately in Group Function Occlusion and in Canine Guided Occlusion separately. Analysis of maximum compressive and tensile stresses created in all the three models were studied using Ansys software version 8.0. Maximum stresses were observed in two-unit cantilever fixed partial denture. Three unit cantilever fixed partial denture resulted in a more homogeneous distribution of stress, thus when replacing the Maxillary Canine a three unit cantilever fixed partial denture with the support of premolars as abutments is a better treatment of choice. Talons cusp: a review and case report of mesiolabially rotated maxillary lateral incisors
A case of bilateral talon cusp in maxillary lateral incisors, a relatively rare condition, is presented. The aetiology and clinical problems are discussed. The aim of this case report is to present an esthetically managed maxillary left lateral incisor associated with a talon cusp. This case report describes restorative considerations for a successful, functional, and esthetic rehabilitation of the tooth. Talon cusp is an anomaly occurring in permanent incisors of either arch. Its occurrence raises problems in esthetics, caries control, and occlusal accommodation for the patient and problems in diagnosis and clinical management for the dentist.Key Words: Talon's cusp, esthetic management, occlusal accommodation
Dentists’ Knowledge and Expertise of Preventive Dental Procedures in Saudi Arabia: A nation-wide Cross-sectional survey
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the dentists’ knowledge and expertise of preventive dental procedures in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Method: A cross sectional study was conducted using the simple random sampling method to evaluate the results of a self reporting questionnaire distributed to 500 dentists working in all the provinces of the country. Results: Completed questionnaires were returned by 439 dentists.72.4% (n=318) of dentists believed that preventive services are effective in reducing the prevalence of dental caries, 76.08% (n=334) consider pit and fissure sealants to be effective, 70.8% (n= 311) are trained in the application of topical fluoride and pit and fissure sealants and only 57.17% (n=251) are aware of Atraumatic Restorative Treatment. Conclusion: The present findings call for a greater emphasis on preventive approach in caries management in dental curriculum and in continuing education This study can be used to formulate comprehensive guidelines for preventive practice at the national level
Prosthetic rehabilitation of an edentulous maxillectomy patient- A case report
Diseases like carcinomas can cause significant effects on human beings like psychological, functional and surgical and can influence the overall quality of life. It is the responsibility of the Prosthodontist to restore the lost esthetics, function and speech. While we strive to achieve the above, it has to be borne in mind that the proposed prosthesis should be simple to handle, easy to maintain, biocompatible, light in weight and convenient for future adjustments. Natal teeth with cleft palate: A case report
Teeth that are present in newborn infants are called "natal teeth". In some cases, the teeth erupt within the first 4 weeks following delivery. These teeth are termed as "neonatal teeth". The incidence of the appearance of natal and neonatal teeth has been reported to be between once every 1000 and once every 6000 births. Natal teeth pose problems in feeding and substantially high risk of aspiration or swallowing by the infant if they are loose. They may also cause irritation and trauma to the infant's soft tissues. Under these circumstances, natal teeth need to be extracted. In this article, a case report is presented where natal teeth were present in the mandibular incisor region along with cleft palate leading to difficulty in feeding. Because the tooth caused problems in the nursing process and ran a risk of aspiration, it was removed. Key words: natal tooth, neonatal tooth, cleft palate
