The Silent Epidemic - Tobacco Use Among Adolescents: Prevention and cessation strategies
No full textBackground. Adolescence is perhaps the healthiest phase in an individual’s life. However Tobacco use in youngsters can result in lifelong addiction to nicotine leading to severe health consequences. Objective. The purpose of this paper was to review the literature with specific attention to health issues as a result of tobacco addiction and to provide an insight into prevention and cessation strategies. Conclusion. As educated health professionals, it becomes our bounden duty to prevent, educate and aid in establishing cessation programs to help patients quit.  
Failures of crown and fixed partial dentures - A clinical survey
No full textFailure of restorations is an important concern in dentistry. A clinical survey was conducted to assess the various failures associated with crowns and fixed partial dentures. The number of units involved and the type of materials used in fabrication of prosthesis were taken into consideration and the frequency of failures was analyzed. Out of 87 cases surveyed, 68 crowns and 19 fixed partial dentures demonstrated failure. The most common cause of failure in crown and fixed partial dentures was due to the lack of retention.Keywords: Crowns, fixed partial dentures, failure
Guidelines in the Arrangement of Lower Incisor Teeth – Review and Clinical Implications
No full textThe ideal position of the teeth in complete dentures is the same as that of the natural teeth. Facial harmony is achieved when teeth are set in their proper relation. The position of the occlusal plane of orientation forms the basis for ideal tooth arrangement, and should fulfill the necessary mechanical, esthetic and phonetic requirements. Most literature related to positioning of artificial anterior teeth emphasizes the position of maxillary teeth. Little information is available regarding the positions of mandibular anterior teeth. Some, apparently, feel that lower natural teeth are not readily visible and that they play a minor role in denture esthetics. The purpose of this article is to review the relationship of the lower incisor teeth to the chin prominence, supramentale and to suggest some guide lines for positioning of the artificial lower incisor teeth
Parotid Sialocele and Fistulae: Current Treatment Options
No full textParotid gland and duct injuries are rare complications following surgery of parotid gland and temporomandibular joint. Various other causes of parotid injury are rupture of parotid abscess, inadvertent incision of parotid abscess, complication of superficial Parotidectomy, gunshot wounds and trauma. Injury to the parotid duct may be difficult to diagnose and treat. If not recognized will lead to salivary fistula and sialocele formation which will not heal spontaneously because of continuous flow of saliva. Persistent salivary fistula may be most troubling to the patient. Successful treatment depends on early recognition and appropriate early intervention
Nickel allergy - Is it a cause of concern in everyday dental practice?
No full textNickel is a constituent of many dental alloys. This article reviews papers published in regard to biological reactions to nickel in dentistry. Nickel is a common allergen but there is no evidence that patients are at signifi­cant risk of developing sensitivity solely due to contact with nickel-containing dental appliances and restorations. Allergic reactions are more likely to occur with prior sensitization from non-dental contacts. Some nickel compounds, which are mildly cytotoxic, have been implicated as carcinogens by inhalation in industrial settings, but these compounds are not present in dental related operations. It is concluded that subjected to recommendations for practitioners and technicians, nickel containing dental alloys do not pose a risk to patients or members of the dental team. Here in this revised clinical technique, the hands free indirect vision [HFIDRV] device is used to achieve a freehand indirect vision or view of the field during the entire procedure. HFIDRV device helps in achieving better working environment to the operator there by reducing the time for the procedure, adding to the patient’s comfort.

Peripheral cementifying fibroma- A case report
No full textAims and objectives: Peripheral cementifying fibroma (PCF) is a solitary reactive gingival growth that predominately affects young females and is usually located in the anterior maxilla. It exhibits a controversial varied nomenculature owing to a diverse histopathologic spectrum.Case description: A case of Peripheral cementifying fibroma located on the mandibular posterior gingiva of a 50 year female patient is described. The lesion was solitary, sessile, firm to hard in consistency and measured about 2 cm in its greatest diameter. Histologically, a cellular fibrous connective tissue stroma with mineralized areas consisting of bony spicules and a large number of psammomomatoid bodies (cementum like calcification) were seen.Conclusion: A definitive diagnosis of Peripheral cementifying fibroma was ascertained based on histological preponderance of psammomatoid bodies
