    Effect Of Protective Coating On Marginal Integrity Of Class II Restorations: A Microleakage Study

    Abstract Objective – The objective of the study was to evaluate the amount of microleakage occurring at the interface of different restorative materials and tooth surface in a class II restoration. Materials & methodology-- 30 freshly extracted non carious premolars extracted for orthodontic reasons were taken. Class II slot cavities were prepared & restored with Resin composite, Polyacid modified resin composites, Resin modified Glass ionomer cement both mesially & distally. Protective coating (G-Coat plus) is applied on one side of tooth above the restoration according to manufacturer’s instructions. All the samples underwent thermocycling for 500 cycles following which they are placed in methylene blue dye for 24 hours. Teeth were sectioned by a diamond saw through the centre of restorations and viewed under stereomicroscope to evaluate the amount of dye penetration. Results --  Reduction in Microleakage was seen with protective coating when compared to samples without coating. With in the types of restorations Resin modified Glass ionomer cement showed least microleakage followed by Polyacid modified resin composites and Resin composite

    Prevalence Of Gingivitis And Periodontitis In Mugappair Population – Chennai, Tamilnadu

    Aims of this study were to assess the oral hygiene status and to determine the prevalence of gingival and periodontal diseases in patients visiting Thai Moogambigai dental college, Mugappair, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. A total of 7378 patients visited the dental college in the period of June 2010 to June 2011. They were evaluated by questionnaires related to oral hygiene practices and clinical examination by using oral hygiene index simplified (OHI-S),Gingival index and Russell’s periodontal index. Out of 7378 examined, 4011 were male patients and 3367 were female patients. Patients were divided in to two age groups (15-30 years and 31-60 years). Prevalence of gingival and periodontal diseases was 36% and 64% in male patients and 47% and 53% in female patients respectively. Male patients were more affected than female patients. Prevalence of Gingivitis and Periodontitis was highly significant in patients belonging to 31-60 years group. Good oral hygiene status was seen in 20% of total population examined. 30% had poor oral hygiene status and the rest 50% showed fair hygiene status

This article reports the presence of incisiform supplemental tooth along with a mesiodens, which interfered with both occlusion and appearance of an 11 year old patient.     A Novel Prosthetic Rehabilitation Of A Pre Adolescent After Removal Of A Large Dentigerous Cyst: Report Of A Case

    Dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst, which apparently develops by accumulation of fluid between the reduced enamel epithelium and the tooth crown of an unerupted tooth. There is usually no pain or discomfort associated with the cyst unless there is acute inflammatory exacerbation. Various treatment options have been proposed for the management of dentigerous cyst. Two most common treatment modalities used are: a. Total enucleation of the cyst and b. Marsupilization for decompression of large volume cysts, or a combination of both.     Comparison of Flouride Release in three banding adhesives-an invitro study

    Purpose: The aim of this in vitro study was to estimate the amount of fluoride release from three different band adhesives(FUJI ORTHOBAND,TP GLASSSIONOMER BAND CEMENT, 3M MULTICURE BAND CEMENT),using the ion selective electrode method over a span of five weeks.Methods: A total number of thirty samples measuring 10 mm diameter and 1 mm height in each group were fabricated using a stainless steel mold and were stored in fifty ml deionized water. The fluoride analysis were carried out using the ion specific electrode for first seven days and there after every week end for four subsequent weeks. 0.5 ml of the test solution was mixed with equal amount of TISAB solution and the ion selective electrode is placed in the solution and the read out is made from the digital meter. Statistical analysis were carried out with one way ANOVA.Results: Results showed that all the three band cements released significant amount of fluoride ions. TP GLASS IONOMER CEMENT released the highest amount of fluoride over the entire five-week period followed by 3M MULTICURE BAND CEMENT and FUJI ORTHOBAND. Hence, all the three band adhesives may prove to be effective long term fluoride releasing materials

    Ozone is a colorless gas form of oxygen and is present in atmosphere. It is a powerful oxidizer. It effectively kills bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites at a dramatically lower concentration. It is a great supplement to conventional therapeutic dental modalities. Treatment may be achieved by increasing the resistance of the tooth against the microbial activity and reducing the extent of microbial activity.     Tobacco – A Double Edged Sword

    The tobacco plant is the cause for millions of cancer cases worldwide. This plant now offers physicians a way to rapidly make vaccines that are able to fight cancer like Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma by upregulating the patient’s own immune mechanism to fight cancer. The Tobacco plant is a member of Solanaceae family and usually gets infected by a virus known as Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV).Viral replication occurs very rapidly in this plant and hence when the gene extracted from the patient’s malignant cell is infused into the tobacco leaves which are infected by this virus, it generates the production of cell- surface antigen within a very short span. This antigen after purification is then injected into the same patient evoking the production of tailor-made antibodies and thus upregulating the patient’s immune system. The aim of this therapy is to build up one’s own immune system to fight against his/her own cancer. This short article highlights the method by which the tobacco plant could thus act as a double edged sword
