Effects of traumatic injuries of primary dentition on the development of the successional teeth - A case report
Incidences of traumatic injuries to anterior teeth especially in children are very high. Along with its effects on the primary dentition it can also have effects on the development of the permanent dentition. This case report discusses about the severe enamel hypoplasia of the permanent maxillary incisors occurring in a 7 year old child due to injury to the primary dentition
Cleidocranial dysplasia - A case report
Cleidocranial dysplasia (Dysostosis) is an autosomal dominant disease with a wide range of expression, characterized by clavicular aplasia or hypoplasia, defective ossification, retarded cranial ossification, delayed bone and teeth development, supernumerary teeth, short stature, stomatognathic & craniofacial abnormalities and a variety of other skeletal abnormalities. Cleidocranial dysplasia is best known for its dental and clavicular abnormalities. It was first described by Marie & Sainton in 1898. It is caused by the CBFA1 gene of chromosome 6p21 a member of the runt family of transcription factors that is responsible for osteoblast differentiation. Cleidocranial dysplasia is a dental disease that needs complex rehabilitation & the assistance of several specialists. This paper presents a case of cleidocranial dysplasia with its clinical & radiographic features.KEY WORDS: Dysplasia, Impacted teeth, Supernumerary teeth. Clavicle
A Comparative Evaluation Of Shear Bond Strength Of Metallic Brackets Bonded After 15 – 30, Or 60 Second Etching And Correlation Of Adhesive Remnant Index With Etch Time – An In Vitro Study
Direct bonding of orthodontic attachments has become a clinical reality, with the application of the acid etch technique, using ortho phosphoric acid. Depth of the etch or the amount of surface enamel removed during the etching procedure depends on the concentration of the acid and the etching time. The present study was designed to evaluate the shear bond strength of metallic brackets at the various etch time of 15-30 or 60 seconds. Etching with phosphoric acid was known to produce dissolution of the outermost enamel layer and provides mechanical attachments for bonded orthodontic brackets. However, the debonding and subsequent cleanup procedure at the end of treatment may be rather time consuming. Also, care must be taken not to induce iatrogenic effects. Ideally in orthodontics a bond is said to be ideal when the bond failure occurs at the enamel composite interface because debonding and subsequent polishing of tooth would cause least damage to the enamel surface. Several recent reports have indicated that a traditional acid etching time of 60 seconds should be reduced to 15 seconds without causing damage to the enamel surface or decreasing shear bond strength (i.e. shear bond of 6-8 Mpa), the purpose of the study is to keep the factors such as the acid concentration at 37%, age of tooth 9 to 16 years and no pre treatment condition of tooth as constant and the etching time alone is varied and its influence on shear bond strength of metallic brackets and its correlation with Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) are studied. The results have shown that clinically adequate bond strength can be achieved at the lower etching time of 15 seconds with minimal iatrogenic damage to natural tooth structure. 
Hemisection With Socket Preservation Surgery As An Alternative Treatment For Vertically Fractured Mandibular Molars: A Case Report
ABSTRACTDiagnosis and management of vertical root fracture is a challenging task for the clinician. The most predictable treatment option for vertical root fractures would be extraction in case of anterior teeth, and hemisection or root amputation of the involved root in the multi-rooted teeth. Following extraction, socket preservation procedure helps to retain the available bone and soft tissue for better function and aesthetics. This case report describes the treatment of a vertically fractured mandibular molar by hemisection with socket preservation surgery followed by restoration with a fixed prosthesis
Treatment of Recurrent Gingival Enlargement associated with Zimmermann-Laband Syndrome: A Case Report
Background: Zimmermann-Laband syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by generalized gingival fibromatosis and defects of ear, nose, nail and bone. Methods: This case report describes the clinical presentation, periodontal findings and treatment of recurrent gingival enlargement in a 22 year old male associated with a previously undiagnosed case of Zimmermann-Laband syndrome. Results: Clinical and radiographic findings supported the diagnosis of Zimmermann-Laband syndrome. The most striking oral findings were gingival enlargement involving the maxillary and the mandibular arches and anterior open bite. Periodontal treatment comprised of Gingivectomy in second and third quadrants. Histopathological evaluation of the excised gingival mass supported the diagnosis of gingival fibromatosis. The patient has been closely followed for the earliest sign of recurrence of gingival enlargement. Conclusion: Dental practitioners should be alert for the various developmental abnormalities that can occur in patients with gingival fibromatosis as it may indicate the presence of a rare disorder like Zimmermann-Laband syndrome. The successful therapy for gingival fibromatosis depends on correctly identifying the etiological factors and improving the impaired function and esthetic appearance through surgical intervention. Pseudohypoparathyroidism– A Clinical Rarity
Pseudohypoparathyroidism is a metabolic disease caused by an inability of the body to respond appropriately to parathyroid hormone (PTH), the principal hormone that regulates calcium and phosphorous levels in the body. Due to the disturbance in the peripheral action of parathormone there is a high serum level of parathormone characterized by hypocalcaemia. Parathormone deficiency has an effect on the calcification of the dental tissues and to a lesser extent on bone matrix production, but the mechanism is obscure.This case report emphasizes the pertinent oral findings which may provide the diagnostic aids for the disease. Therefore, the fundamental difference between hypoparathyroidism and pseudohypoparathyroidism is that PTH is absent in hypoparathyroidism, but the body will respond to it; and PTH is plentiful in pseudohypoparathyroidism, but the body cannot respond to it
Role of Oral Exfoliative Cytology in Oral Leukoplakia and Squamous cell Carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common cancer of the oral cavity. Unlike other cancer, due to its accessibility the oral cancer can detected at the early stage. Oral exfoliative cytology is the simple, sensitive and valuable adjuvant for gold standard Biopsy. In our study we have included 17 cases of oral leukoplakia, and 20 cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma to analze the sensitivity and specificity of oral exfoliative cytology. We have also included the cytological features noticed in leukoplakia and squamous cell carcinoma. Result was suggestive of 69% of sensitivity in leukoplakia and 75% of sensitivity in squamous cell carcinoma and both has 100% specificity in oral exfoliative cytology.KEYWORDS: Oral exfoliative cytology, Squamous cell carcinoma, Oral cytology
Management of a Patient with Oral Submucous Fibrosis Having Restricted Mouth Opening: A Case Report
Objectives- Oral Submucous Fibrosis is a chronic inflammatory disease that results in progressive juxtaepethelial Inflammatory reaction followed by a fibroelastic change of lamina propia with epethial atrophy leading to stiffness of oral mucosa, causing trismus . This causes the difficulty in chewing, swallowing and speaking . Method- Sectional complete denture was an appropriate treatment to resolve the problem of Oral Submoucos Fibrosis. The acylic resins connectors in the form of sleeves and cross pins reduced the overall costs and simplified the laboratory technique. Results- The rehabilitation of patient suffering from OSMF is a challenge to Prosthodontist. This article describes the prosthodontic management of such patient by using a sectional denture . Fabrication of Custom Ocular Prosthesis Using a Graph Grid: A Case Report
Patients requiring treatment with custom ocular prosthesis are those who have lost ocular structures through orbital evisceration or orbital enucleation which was necessary as a surgical intervention for a congenital defect, pathology or an accident. The disfigurement associated with eye loss can cause significant physical and emotional disturbance. As iris placement is a technique sensitive procedure, visual assessment alone may not be accurate.The present article is an illustration of a case report of a lady chosen for a custom ocular prosthesis. The method described here uses a transparent grid template from which the iris is traced. An attempt is also made to mimick the shade and colour of the sclera in the wax pattern itself; using white paraffin wax. This gives an accurate registration of the position and alignment of iris disc assembly, giving a natural look. Key words: Custom ocular prosthesis, graph grid.
