    No full text
Dentigerous cysts are rare in the maxillary anterior area with less than 10 cases reported. Trauma to the deciduous teeth can result in the formation of dentigerous cyst around the permanent successor. Here we are reporting two cases of dentigerous cyst around permanent incisors with overlying non vital deciduous teeth. Enucleation of the cyst was done in both the cases

Management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea secondary to TMJ Ankylosis by Distraction Osteogenesis

    No full text
Mandibular retrognathism secondary to temporomandibular joint ankylosis has been a significant contributing factor for obstructive sleep apnea. Although several surgical methods including conventional osteotomies have been tried in the past, the intensive nature of the operation and its results which includes change in facial esthetics, occlusion and its long term effects on the TMJ preclude many individuals from undergoing osteotomy. Distraction osteogenesis, a less invasive surgical technique has been employed in our study on a routine basis in the management of sleep apnea, secondary to TMJ ankylosis, and the results have been gratifying

Palatal Possibilties: Variations of palatal root canal configuration in maxillary molars - A Report of Two Cases

    No full text
Variations in root number and canal morphology are challenges for successful endodontic therapy. This clinical article describes 2 different case reports of maxillary first molars with unusual anatomy of 4 root canals and their endodontic management. Treating these additional canals in maxillary first molars might be challenging. Inability to locate and properly treat these extra canals might lead to failures. A thorough knowledge of root canal morphology and the proper use of microscopes increase chances for successful clinical results. Keywords: palatal root, root canal configuration, maxillary molar, two canal systems, two palatal roots

A Comparative Evaluation Of Arch Width Changes In Extraction And Non-Extraction Cases

    No full text
Objectives:   1) To analyze if there were any changes in the arch width (both maxilla and         mandible) in extraction and non-extraction treatment groups by comparing pretreatment and post treatment study models in the Canine, Premolar and Molar regions. 2) To compare arch width changes between extraction and non-extraction groups of patients. Method:  Pre and post treatment study models of 25 patients who had 4 first-premolar extractions and 25 patients treated without extractions were randomly selected and measured. All patients underwent comprehensive orthodontic therapy with Pre-adjusted edgewise appliances at the Department of orthodontics in Rajah Muthiah Dental College and Hospital, Annamalainagar under the direction of a variety of instructors. The obtained values were subjected to statistical analysis using students paired t-tests and two-sample t test. Results:  The extraction of the premolars to correct tooth size arch length discrepancy does not result in narrowing of the dental arches as no significant changes were found when extraction and non-extraction groups were compared.  Extraction doesn’t result in narrowed arches. &nbsp

Total 588 individuals were examined by house to house survey. The prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis was recorded using Dean’s index (1942) along with WHO health assessment form 1997 and Community fluorosis index.Results527 (89.6%) of the total studied population were affected with various grades of dental fluorosis. Community fluorosis index was found 1.76 which denotes “medium” category of public health significance. Conclusion High prevalence of dental fluorosis and high community fluorosis index suggest that fluorosis is a major public health problem in the study area.Key wordsDental fluorosis, prevalence, severit

Newer Trends In Local Drug Delivery For Periodontal Problems – A Preview

    No full text
Elimination or adequate suppression of putative periodontopathic microorganisms in the subgingival microbiota is essential for periodontal healing. Antimicrobial treatments in periodontics range from mechanical debridement of tooth surfaces and home plaque removal to local and systemic delivery of chemical antimicrobial agents. Recent development of science and technology has revolutionized the basic outlook and approach to the problems of periodontal disease. The local delivery of antimicrobial therapy to periodontal pockets has the benefit of administering more drugs at the target site while minimizing the exposure of total body to the drug and the sustained release of antimicrobial in the periodontal pockets. Different drugs used for local delivery are tetracyclines including doxycycline and minocycline, metronidazole and chlorhexidine. The present review throws light on new trends that are been used in the field of local drug delivery system utilising the herbal products and other novel products

Mandibular swelling as the first manifestation of Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma : A case report

    No full text
Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma is also called as lymphosarcoma and involves neoplastic proliferation of lymphoid cells affecting the B- lymphocytes.  Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL)is the most common form ofNon Hodgkin’s lymphomaand accounts for about 30% of NHL . It is an aggressive form of NHL that often (about 40% of the time) involves organs other than lymph nodes. Jaw involvement by NHL is very rare, but among jaw lesions, maxilla is more commonly involved than mandible. This case report describes a case of Non Hodgkin’s  lymphoma ofDiffuse large B-cell type with primary in the mandible , which presented as a mandibular swelling as the first sign of the  disease. The timely biopsy and immunohistiochemistry were instrumental in the diagnosis.  The lymphoma had not disseminated and management by chemo-radiation allowed for disease eradication and new, post-treatment, bone formation

An In Vitro Inhibition Of Bacteria From Mixed Culture By Five Root Canal Materials

    No full text
Abstract Aim: This study was performed to determine the in-vitro antibacterial effectiveness of five root canal filling materials.  Methods: Thirty children aged between 3 -9 yrs were selected for the study. The bacterial content of the root tips were collected by filing the apical 3-4 mm of the root canals with sterile endodontic K-files. Aliquots of the suspension containing the bacteria were spread on Petri dishes and after it was dry small wells were made in the agar using a sterile amalgam carrier. Freshly mixed root canal filling materials were placed into the wells using syringe or amalgam carrier. All plates were incubated at 37ºc for 7 days by using an anaerobic gas pack jar and gas generating envelopes. Diameters of the zones of inhibition were measured with a slide caliper. Results and conclusion: It was concluded statistically that the greatest zones of   Inhibition was observed in ZOE + FC group. Further studies might be necessary to   determine the optimal primary root canal filling material in terms of bacterial   Inhibition.   Key words:   antibacterial activity, root canal, ZnOE, camphorated   Parachlorophenol Camphorated parachlorophenol, Zones of inhibition &nbsp

Abstract Aim & Objectives: Our objective was to compare the efficacy of pre-procedural rinsing with chlorhexidine and essential oil containing mouth rinse in reducing the viable bacteria in dental aerosol following oral prophylaxis and to understand the quality of microorganisms present in the dental aerosol. Materials & Methods: The twenty  subjects selected , were randomly chosen into two groups –Group-I preprocedural rinsing with chlorhexidine  mouth rinse and Group II-pre-procedural rinsing with essential oil containing mouth rinse. Blood agar plates were used to collect the aerosol during oral prophylaxis procedure. Two standardized location of the operatory were chosen for each patient to be evaluated using blood agar plates placed at-left side of the dental chair where the patient is seated, and at the  tray of the dental chair 6inches away from the subject’s mouth .The blood agar plates were exposed to 30 minutes to collect airborne bacteria during oral prophylaxis. Results; Results showed that a regimen of 1minute pre-procedural rinsing with 0.2 % chlorhexidine gluconate before dental procedures consistently reduced colony-forming units than prerinsing with essential oil containing mouthrinse. Conclusion: The conclusion is that chlorhexidine is an effective primary measure in reducing aerosol cross-contamination when using dental devices in a dental set up
