Preliminary Data on Mesenchymal Characteristics of Stem Cells Obtained from Human Dental Pulp and Dental Follicle of Wisdom Teeth

    No full text
Aims and Objectives: Stem cells isolated from human dental follicle and dental pulp tissues were evaluated to determine their mesenchymal nature before differentiation. Material and Methods: Dental pulp and dental follicle tissues were gently collected from human third molars obtained from healthy patients and cultivated under specific conditions. Single cell-derived cell lines were evaluated in terms of surface marker expression and cell morphology. Results: Dental pulp and Dental follicle stem cell populations mainly composed of typical fibroblast-like cells. Assessment of surface marker expression by flow cytometric analysis revealed that dental pulp and dental follicle stem cells were positive for CD 105, CD 73, CD 90, but negative for hematopoietic markers such as CD 45 and CD 34, suggesting that these cells are mesenchymal-like stem cells. Conclusions: Dental pulp and dental follicle stem cells express typical surface antigens of mesenchymal stem cells and may be considered as valuable sources for apply in tissue engineering and transplant

Role of Dentists in Disaster Response - A brief review

    No full text
Natural disasters and bioterrorism attacks are the real dangers staring mankind in the face. This calls for everpreparedness on the part of the health care workers. Dentists are not perceived as much of help in case of any disaster event. Dentists are exposed to information in many general medical areas during their pre-doctoral education that can be useful in disaster response situations. Dentists have the clinical skills and medical knowledge that are invaluable assets in a mass casualty event, dentists can be given the opportunity with additional targeted training to become more effective responders to natural disasters and other catastrophic events.  Inculcating disaster training in the undergraduate course will better prepare the dentist for any surge event. This article reviews the role dentists can play in disaster response

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of maxillary and mandibular incisor crowding among 13-16 year old Saudi school boys. The study sample consisted of 799 boys selected randomly from private and government schools of Abha city in Aseer region of Saudi Arabia. The scoring method for incisor crowding comprised of clinical examination for linear displacement (labio -lingual) of anatomic contact points of each maxillary and mandibular incisor in relation to the adjacent tooth. Five displacements from the mesial aspect of the right canine to the mesial aspect of left canine were examined. (Little, 1975) The examination was conducted by a single examiner and boys with previous history of extracted permanent teeth were excluded from the study. Of the 799 boys examined some degree of incisor crowding was detected in 696 (87.1 %) boys whereas 103 (12.9%) showed well aligned maxillary and mandibular incisors. A total of 490 (61.3%) boys showed bi-maxillary crowding, 141 (17.6%) showed mandibular and 65 (8.1%) showed maxillary crowding only. There was no marked difference in the percentage of children showing incisor crowding based on age groups. High prevalence of incisor crowding among young Saudi population is evident from this study. The study also highlights the soaring demand for orthodontic treatment in the country. We recommend further broad-based studies which may include the irregularity index, extent of incisor crowding and a more detailed study regarding the tooth and jaws size discrepancy and its relation to incisor crowding. &nbsp

Three Rooted Maxillary First Premolar: A Case Report

    No full text
Premolars are the tooth group with the largest variation in root number and form among  primates. Usually they present with two canals. The incidence of three canals in them is quite rare. However, it must be confirmed radiographically and clinically during endodontic treatment. This report presents relatively uncommon clinical cases of maxillary first premolars with three roots.&nbsp

Peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma: A case report and literature review

    No full text
Among the fibromas of oral cavity, cemento-ossifying fibroma has been reported as an occasional growth. This growth has been seen predominantly in children and adolescents, involving maxillary incisors and canine region. This kind of growth is seldom observed in the fourth decade of life in mandibular anterior quadrant with predilection for female gender.POF represents a reactive benign lesion of connective tissue and is not the soft tissue counterpart of ossifying fibroma (COF) and is also not related anyhow to peripheral odontogenic fibroma (POdF). POF in the age of 45 years, arising in the mandibular anterior region, is an occasional entity. Here, a case report of peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma (PCOF) in an adult lady in her fourth decade of life is presented. This case report comprises the growth that occurred in the mandibular anterior region with displacement of anterior teeth, its satisfactory management and literature review. Careful clinical examination and histopathology findings should be correlated to conclude the final diagnosi

Dental injuries reported in a dental school: A two year preliminary study

    No full text
This epidemiologic survey aimed at assessing the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries in children seen at the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive children dentistry, Institute of dental sciences, Bareilly, India. The records of a total of 458 children (aged 0 to 18 years) seen from 2008 to 2010 were analyzed in the dental trauma clinic were surveyed, comprising a total of 49 traumatized primary and permanent teeth. Data pertaining to the child and to the trauma such as age, gender, etiology, teeth involved, type of traumatic injury, time elapsed between the trauma and seeking care, and the presence and kind of clinical and radiographic sequelae in the first visit were collected from the dental records. All variables studied were assessed by means of frequency analysis and the Chi-square test (p < 0.05). A higher prevalence of trauma was observed in boys (81.7%) and in the age group from 0-3 years (18.3%). The most affected teeth were the central incisors (88.7%) and the most common trauma etiology was a fall from the child's own height (66.8%). The supporting tissues were the most affected. Within the limits of this study, it can be concluded that traumatic dental injuries occur more frequently in young male individuals, due to falls and bicycle accidents

Bio-Aesthetic Management of Complicated Crown Fracture -A Case Report

    No full text
Coronal fractures of permanent maxillary anterior teeth are the most frequent type of dental injury. Dentists are often confronted with managing dental trauma and restoring fractured teeth. One of the options for managing coronal tooth fractures when the tooth fragment is available and there is no or minimal violation of the biological width is the reattachment of the dental fragment. The development and use of fiber-reinforced posts have made the reattachment of the crown aesthetically possible. This article presents with a case report of restoration of fractured maxillary lateral incisor using direct fiber-reinforced post system

An Endodontic Overfilling Occupied The Foramen Mentale- A Case Report

Iatrogenic complications of endodontic therapy, might be an etiological factor and mediator of important pathological changes such as infections and sensory disturbances. This case presents a 52 year-old female patient, who referred with complaints of one year persisting pain and numbness of right lower lip and chin. The radiographic examinations revealed a large amount of diffuse radiopaque material suspected to be an extruded endodontic filling, extending from the lower right canine to the first molar tooth. Under local anesthesia following a routine surgical protocol, a bone corticotomy with curettage of extruded material were performed. During one month of healing period, the patient felt an anesthesia. However, two months later the recovery of  sensation was reported

Herbal Usage In Endodontics- A Review

AbstractThe major objective in root canal treatment is to disinfect the entire root canal system. Although cleaning and shaping  and use of antimicrobial medicaments are effective in reducing the bacterial load some bacteria do remain behind and multiply, causing reinfection of the canal. Considering the ineffectiveness  , potential side effects and safety concerns of synthetic drugs, the herbal alternatives for endodontic usage might prove to be advantageous.&nbsp
