Comparison Of Serum Lipid Levels In Periodontal Health And Disease In Systemically Healthy Subjects – A Clinical And Biochemical Study
Aim: To compare the serum lipid levels in systemically healthy subjects with and without periodontal disease and to correlate the results between hyperlipidemia and periodontitis. Material and Methods: A total of 80 subjects of both sexes (42 males and 38 females), in the age group of 35-55 yrs were divided into two groups of 40 each as study and controls. All the patients were evaluated for serum cholesterol, serum triglycerides, LDL and HDL cholesterol. Variables related to high cholesterol levels, including age, sex and body mass index were also evaluated. The dental parameters recorded consisted of probing pocket depth (PPD), community periodontal index (CPI) and periodontal disease index (PDI). Results: Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides were marginally increased in study group but were not found to be statistically significant (p=0.106, p=0.100 & p=0.199 respectively). Triglycerides showed a positive correlation with CPI and PDI after adjusting for age and disease. However, the correlation of triglycerides with PDI was minimal compared to the correlation of triglyceride with CPI. Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that there was no significant relationship between periodontal disease, regardless of its intensity, and blood lipid levels in the study population
Chemo-mechanical Caries Removal System- A Brief Review
Chemomechanical caries removal involves the chemicalsoftening of carious dentine followed by its removal by gentleexcavation. Since, its inception in 1980’s, CMCR has been originally marketed as 3 different systems, viz., Caridex, Carisolv® & Papacarie®. Caridex required large volumes of solution and a special applicator tip, which weaned its popularity around 1990’s and thus, was discontinued to be marketed. Carisolv® & Papacarie® were later introduced around 2000, which had overcome the limitations of Caridex and are being used amongst the Clinicians aware of this technique. 
Rhabdomyosarcoma-Report of Two Cases and Review
Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in children. It is seen rarely in adults. There are three variants of RMS which include embryonal, alveolar which are commonly seen in children and pleomorphic type seen in adult. In recent years, spindle cell and sclerosing variants of RMS have also been recognized in adults. Because of the scarcity of data further extensive research has to be carried regarding the tumor. The prognosis of the tumor is worse in adults when compared to children, with an overall 5-year survival of less than 30%. This review will discuss the clinicopathological characteristics of RMS, the different histological variants, and two case reports of our Institution.  
Minimally displacive impression technique: A clinical report
Management of edentulous ridges with localized hyperplastic tissue is challenging. This clinical report describes the treatment of a completely edentulous patient with localized hyperplastic alveolar ridges. A modified impression technique was used to optimize the treatment of edentulous patient with ‘flabby’ alveolar ridges in which surgical preparation of the mouth was contraindicated to meet the functional and psychological needs of the patient. Thereby the treatment described has simplified the management of a historically complex problem
An in-vitro analysis of the antimicrobial efficacy of herbal toothpastes on selected primary plaque colonizers
Plaque associated oral disease affects a considerable portion of the population and is considered one of the major causes of tooth loss. In most cases toothbrushing only removes a limited amount of dental plaque and other chemical agents are required to reduce the bacterial load. Aims & objectives: The purpose of study was to determine whether there was any significant difference in the antimicrobial activity of 4 herbal toothpastes against cultures of 3 primary plaque colonizers. Methods: A total of 5 toothpastes were tested for their antimicrobial efficacy against Streptococcus mutans (NCTC 10920), Streptococcus sanguinis (NCTC 10904) and a non-specific α-heamolytic streptococcus by agar diffusion method. The data was collected and analysed using one way ANOVA and Tukey’s multiple comparison test significant at p<0.05. Results: Dentazyme® Herbal toothpaste showed the greatest ability to inhibit bacterial growth for all the test organisms (p<0.05). Nature Fresh had the lowest potential for antimicrobial activity. Conclusions: Dentazyme® Herbal toothpaste was the only herbal toothpaste to inhibit the growth of all the bacteria tested and had similar antimicrobial efficacy to a triclosan containing toothpaste (Colgate® Total®)
Local Drug Delivery Using Doxycycline Hyclate (Microplast) In The Treatment Of Periodontal Disease- A Clinical And Microbiological Evaluation
Abstract :. The rationale for the use of antibiotics in periodontal therapy is based on the concept that bacteria are the primary cause of periodontal disease and thus treatment should be directed towards controlling the bacterial flora. Local antimicrobial therapy in Periodontics involves direct placement of an antimicrobial agent into subgingival sites, minimizing the impact of the agent on normal body sites. In this study, Chitosan impregnated with doxycycline hyclate is being used on the basis that local action of doxycycline will help reduce a wide range of bacteria-both aerobic & anaerobic. A total of 30 patients were selected and divided into two groups, control group and test group The control sites were treated by scaling & root planning alone without local drug delivery. The test sites were treated by scaling & root planing followed by the drug 0.1% Doxycycline Hyclate loaded membrane (Chitosan impregnated with doxycycline hyclate). At selected sites, the clinical parameters were assessed on day ‘0’, 7th day and 21st day. The results indicated that there was a significant reduction in the plaque index , sulcus bleeding index and probing depths in the test group compared to the control group at the end of the study. From the above observations it can be suggested that subgingival delivery of 0.1% Doxycycline Hyclate in the form of a biomembrane can be effective, when used as an adjunct with mechanical debridement in the treatment of chronic periodontitis
Lasers in Orthodontics - A Review
Understanding the various uses of lasers ,is simply to accept, the cutting edge of present day orthodontics .From the daily orthodontic procedure of surface preparation, bonding, debonding till the adjunctive procedures of frenectomy, canine exposure, gingivectomy can be done with lasers. Record maintenance, cast analysis in 3D, holography, spectroscopy, welding, scanning and many more are done with lasers. Future of painless & faster dentistry, in an orthodontics practice, can all be achieved, to the one that understands the use of lasers in the field of orthodontics. Lasers are our tools of tomorrow, only if we are ready with the knowledge of it today
Inverted Eruption of Mandibular Premolar-Report of an Unusual Case
Aims and objectives:The aims and objectives are to report an unusual case of inverted eruption of mandibular premolar. Case description: A 32 year old female presented with extraoral discharging sinus at right submandibular area. On intra-oral examination right mandibular second premolar was found to be absent. Radiographic examination revealed an inverted tooth piercing the lower border of the mandible on the right side .Surgical intervention through the sinus tract confirmed the inverted tooth to be mandibular second premolar. Conclusion:regardless of the cause of such condition this is a rare case which presents an infrequent extraoral eruption of a mandibular tooth associated with soft tissue complication
Kikuchi Fugimoto Disease- A Case Report
Abstract: Aims & Objectives: Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease is a benign, self-limiting disease affecting mainly young females. It presents mainly as cervical lymphadenopathy, fever and rash. Lymphocytosis & Neutropenia is seen commonly with raised ESR.Its initial clinical presentation is similar to that of an infective pathology and neoplasm (lymphoma), and hence it can be easily misdiagnosed and get inappropriately treated.Case description: A 7 year old girl presented with gradually progressive diffuse swelling in the right parotid region, associated with moderate degree of pain, fever & fatigue. Her medical & family history was non-contributory. Examination showed a diffuse, tender, firm, inflammatory swelling in the left parotid region. Few non-tender discrete lymph nodes were palpable on right side of neck. Per-abdominal examination showed hepatosplenomegaly. Oral examination revealed few decayed teeths.Laboratory studies showed lymphocytosis & neutropenia and a mild rise in ESR .Open biopsy and histopathology findings were consistent with Kikuchi disease. Conclusion: The treating physician must keep in mind Kikuchi Fugimoto disease as a differential diagnosis when dealing with a patient having lymphadenopathy, fever and rash. This self-limiting benign condition must be differentiated from infectious diseases and lymphoma, which although present similarly but differ completely in management
Evaluation of the Efficacy of Two Amide Group Local Intrapocket Anesthetic Gels in Non Invasive Periodontal Therapy - A Clinical Study
Background: The efficacy of two intrapocket local anesthetics of amide group, Lignocaine 5% and Bupivacaine 5% were analyzed and compared to each other in the procedure of Scaling and root planing.Methods: Forty patients were divided in two equal groups of Lignocaine 5% and Bupivacaine 5% .Gels of each drug were obtained and used for the procedure of scaling and root planing (SRP). The gels were applied in the pocket with a 2mm diameter plastic canula attached to a syringe. Every 1 minute probing was done for anesthesia assessment and on ‘no pain’ of probing SRP done. Every 5 minutes probing was continued to find out the time for which the anesthetic drug effect lasted, SRP was done by an independent blind observer and pain assessment and gel application by another to eliminate the bias. Pain assessment was done on 100mm Visual analog scale (VAS), and Verbal Response Scale (VRS) on a four point scale having points labeled from none pain to severe pain, which was used at the end of the procedure.Results: The data analyzed showed that Bupivacaine 5% gel takes a longer time to start its action and similarly the peak effect is reached late when compared with Lignocaine 5% gel (p< 0.01).But the duration for which the anesthesia lasts is significantly higher for Bupivacaine (average 30.25 mins). And the overall pain experienced by patients is also significantly less than that by patients in Lignocaine group.Conclusion: Bupivacaine 5% is more effective topical intrapocket anesthetic for Scaling and Root Planing procedure and other time taking Periodontal procedures as compared to Lignocaine 5% ,and it may be a better alternative to Infiltration local anesthesia
