Probiotic way of dental caries prevention
‘An apple a day keeps doctor away’ the famous quote now in recent years will definitely modify into ‘Probiotics per day keeps doctor away’. Bacteria known as probiotics have been added to various foods because of their beneficial effects for human health. The potential application of probiotics for oral health has recently attracted the attention of several teams of researchers. Because of the increasing global problem with antimicrobial drug resistance, the concept of probiotic therapy is interesting and pertinent. Present paper focuses on possible oral benefits of probiotics and concerns regarding its use.Key words: caries, probiotics, lactobacilli, bifidobacteri
Full Mouth Rehabilitation of Amelogenesis Imperfecta - A Case Report
This case presentation deals with the multidisciplinary approach of an 18 year old with Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI) of the hypoplastic type. The patient came with a chief complaint of small sized teeth and unsatisfactory esthetics. No abnormalities were detected in her past medical history. Her family history revealed similar condition in her father and her sibling (sister). On clinical examination, the crowns of all teeth were small, discoloured worn out and hypoplastic. The roots appeared normal on radiographic examination. The aim of the treatment was to preserve the tooth structure, restore the vertical dimension, improve esthetics and masticatory function. The treatment procedures involved endodontic, restorative and periodontic interventions. After recording the vertical height by a facebow transfer, endodontic treatment and crown lengthening were performed w.r.t the upper anteriors. As the patient showed a high smile line, periodontal surgery was carried out for the upper anterior teeth to obtain the average smile line. The lost vertical height was regained in a phased manner by placing full coverage crowns for all the teeth. Thus by systematic and sequential interdisciplinary treatment approach the patient’s esthetic and functional requirements was fulfilled. The Relationship between Dental Age, Bone Age and Chronological Age in Children with Short Stature
Background and objective: The knowledge of bone age and dental age is of great importance for pediatrician and pediatric dentist. Therefore objective of this study is to determine and compare dental age, bone age and chronological age in children with short stature. Method: 60 short statured children between the age group of 18-14 years were selected. Chronological age was assessed by recording date of birth. Dental age assessment was done using orthopantamogram following the method described by Demirjian. Bone age assessment was carried out using hand wrist radiograph following Bjork, Grave and Brown’s method. Results: Dental age and Bone age was delayed compared to chronological age in both sexes. The correlations between chronological age, dental age and bone age were all positive. Statistically very highly significant correlation was found in females. Interpretation and conclusion: The data supports the concept that dental age and bone age delay is a significant feature in short statured children. It is important to consider dental age and bone age as variables for diagnosing short stature children. To support our findings further a well designed, controlled as well as longitudinal studies with a larger sample size is required. Complexity at its simplest by interceptive orthodontics
Supernumerary teeth are relatively common in the oral cavity and are characterized by an excessive number of teeth. The term "mesiodens" refers to a supernumerary tooth located in the midline of the maxilla between the central incisors. Mesiodens may cause a variety of pathological complications such as impaction of the maxillary central incisors, tooth retention or delayed eruption of the permanent incisors, crowding, eruption within the nasal cavity, formation of diastema, intraoral infection, root anomaly, root resorption of adjacent teeth and cyst formation accompanied by bone destruction. Therefore it is recommended to follow-up with regular radiographic examination. Early diagnosis minimizes treatment needs and prevents associated complications. The present cases focus on early intervention of extracting supernumerary teeth and closure of space followed by minimizing the complexity of crowding
Reliability and Validity of a Questionnaire to assess Oral Health Literacy among College Students in Bangalore City
Objective: The objectives of the present study are to develop a new questionnaire and assess its test-retest reliability, internal reliability, convergent validity and predictive validity. Methods: various patient education material were collected, the items of the questionnaire were framed based on the information provided through these materials. The questionnaire was pilot tested among 75 college students and later was administered to 500 college students. The test retest reliability was assessed by administering the questionnaire twice to 20 participants, internal consistency reliability by Cronbach’s alpha, convergent validity by Pearson’s correlation with REALD-30, predictive validity by Pearson’s correlation with OHIP-14. Results: 28% were females, mean age of sample was 19.06 (S.D.= 1.27). Mean score for the oral health literacy questionnaire was 6.7 (S.D.= 1.27), test-retest reliability was 0.69, internal consistency reliability was 0.408, correlation with REALD-30 was 0.32, with OHIP-14 was -0.186. Conclusion: The reliability and validity of the questionnaire could not be established in the present study. Radix Entomolaris an Endodontic Problem - A Case Series
The main objective of successful endodontic therapy is thorough mechanical and chemical cleaning of the entire root canal system and its three dimensional obturation with an inert filling material. Variation of the root canal morphology especially in multirooted teeth is a constant challenge for diagnosis and successful endodontic therapy. The present article focuses on the identification, access cavity modification and management of the distolingual root of mandibular 1st molars. Keywords: Radix Endomolaris, Supernumerary root, Working length, Loupes, Champagne tes
Plaque removal efficacy of powered and manual toothbrushes under supervised and unsupervised conditions : A comparative clinical study.
Aims: The present study was undertaken to determine and compare the efficacyof manual and powered toothbrushes under supervised and unsupervised conditions in 200 school going children between 6-13 years of age.Methodology: 200 school going children between age group of 6-13 years were selected.Children were randomly divided into two groups 100 each.Group 1 were given manual brushes while group 2 were given powered brushes.the groups were further divided into two subgroup- supervised brushing in subgroup A ,unsupervised brushing in subgroup B.At 3,6,9 and 12 weeks plaque was recorded according to Turseky-Gilmore-Glickman modification of Quingley Hein index and Oral hygiene performance index.Data was statistically analyzed.Result: Both brushes significantly reduced the plaque accumulationthough to different degrees. Conclusion: Powered brushes showed significant plaque reduction as compared to the manual brushes.Supervised group of both brushes showed a greater plaque reduction
Expression of P63 in Oral Mucosa Covering Impacted Teeth: An Immunohistochemical Study
Objective: The purpose of the study was to examine the expression of p63 gene in asymptomatic enclosed lower third molar covering oral mucosa. Design: : 50 samples of normal oral mucosa taken from 50 patients who underwent third molar surgery were included into the study. The samples were subdivided into two groups. One group was made of oral mucosa covering completely impacted teeth, while other group was made of oral mucosa covering partially impacted teeth.Only nuclear staining of the cells was evaluated by percentage of positive cells. Results: : Immunoexpression of p63 was almost equal in submucosa cells of both groups, showing a faint to intermediate positivity. Basal layer of oral mucosa covering completely enclosed teeth have shown a stronger expression of p63 than it was the case with the other group. Conclusion: Expression of p63 is noticed in basal and suprabasal layers of oral mucosa covering impacted teeth. Weak expression of p63 in basal layer of oral mucosa covering partially impacted teeth, migh be associated with teeth eruption, lesser number of stem cells and thinner mucosa patch than it is a case with oral mucosa covering completely impacted teeth.
The Prevalence and Etiology of Maxillary Midline Diastema in a Saudi population in Aseer region of Saudi Arabia
Maxillary midline diastema is a self-diagnosing esthetic problem appearing in children and affecting adolescents and adults irrespective of gender or ethnicity. In the present study, 200 patients between the ages of 13 and 40 years were examined to determine the existence, degree and etiology of maxillary midline diastema. The study sample consisted of 158 (79%) males and 42 (21%) females. Diastema was observed in 23% of the study sample with width ranging between 0.5 – 4mm. Generalized spacing (39%) was the most common causative factor. Sexual dimorphism was more in favor of males (25%) than females (14%). Significant number of the patients (78%) had at least one other member of their family with diastema, mostly brother or sister. 43% of them considered diastema to be an esthetic problem, however, all wanted to undergo treatment to close the gap in the future.
