    Concrescence in Primary Dentition: A Case Report

    Concrescence is the connection of two or more teeth by root cementum alone after the tooth crown has been formed. The incidence of concrescent teeth is reported to be highest in the posterior maxilla. The presence of concrescent teeth may influence teeth extraction as well as periodontal, endodontic, orthodontic and even prosthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. Unexpected complications arising from this condition may lead to legal complications. Therefore, consideration should be given to the possible occurrence, recognition, and implications of this anomaly in diagnosis and treatment planning.     Aesthetics plays an important role on psychological perspective of an individual.     Bond strength and tensile strength of surface treated resin teeth with microwave cured and heat cured acrylic resin denture base: An in-vitro study

    Purpose: The study compared the effect of pre-processed surface treatment such as sand blasting and grinding of ridge lap area of the acrylic teeth on the tensile strength and bond strength of the permanent denture base fabricated with different curing techniques.   Materials and methods: Ridge lap surface areas of the acrylic maxillary anterior teeth were treated with sandblasting and grinding procedure. Specimens were fabricated and processed with conventional heat cured, microwave cured and self cured techniques. Specimens were subjected to bond strength and tensile strength testing.   Results: Sandblasting in all type of curing possessed higher bond and tensile strength. Grinding method  yielded higher bond and tensile strength compared to control groups.   Conclusion: It is recommended sandblat the ridge lap area of the acrylic denture teeth prior to denture base processing.     KEYWORDS:  Bond strength; conventional cure; microwave cure; sand blastin

    Effect of 10% carbamide peroxide bleaching gel on marginal Integrity of tooth colored restorative materials : An invitro microleakage study

    Aims and objectives: To evaluate the effect of 10% carbamide peroxide bleaching gel on marginal integrity of tooth colored restorative materials. Materials and Methods: Forty five human premolar teeth extracted for orthodontic reason with good enamel integrity were selected for the study and divided into three groups of 15 teeth each. Class-V cavities were prepared on the buccal surfaces of the teeth. The cavities were restored with composite resin, resin modified glassionomer, and conventional glass ionomer in the respective groups. 10 teeth in each group were subjected to thermocycling. After thermocycling the teeth were exposed to the bleaching agent. The remaining teeth were kept aside as control. After bleaching, all the teeth, including the control groups were subjected to microleakage analysis. Results:  Statistical significant differences(P<0.001) were seen between the control groups and the experimental groups. The marginal integrity of the resin modified glass ionomer was less affected while exposing to  bleaching, when compared to composite resin and conventional glass ionomer. Conclusion:  The results suggest that resin modified glass ionomer performed better at both enamel and dentin margins when compared to the other two experimental groups. &nbsp

    Comparison of anticariogenic effect of Amalgomer CR, Fuji VII and Heliomolar Refill in the cavosurface margin- An in-vitro study

    Secondary caries is one of the primary causes for the dental restorations failure. The frequency and severity of this problem can be reduced by using fluoride containing restorative materials. With the preludence of biomimetic esthetic restorative material along with their reinforced physical properties and caries resistant activity, this investigation assessed their capacity to resist caries in the cavosurface margin invitro. Cavity with a dimension of 2mm´3mm´1.5mm was prepared in buccal / lingual surface of 40 extracted sound human premolars. The teeth were randomly divided into four groups of 10 each and were restored with experimental materials namely Amalgomer CR (Advanced Health Care Ltd.), Fuji VII (GC Corporation), Heliomolar Refill (Ivoclar Vivadent) and Fusion Alloy (Heraeus Kulzer Int.). After 12 weeks in caries activating solution (pH 4.3) for caries-like lesion formation, the teeth were sectioned occluso-gingivally through the middle of the restoration and examined under transmission light microscope. The statistical analysis [Kruskul-Wallis Test (H) and Mann-Whitney ‘U’ test (Z)] showed the anticariogenic efficacy of Amalgomer CR was very highly significant followed by Fuji VII, Heliomolar Refill and the least by Fusion Alloy

    Comparison of Root Canal Cleaning Ability of ProTaper and Liberator Rotary NiTi Instrument Systems-A SEM Study

     Effective cleaning and shaping of the root canal system is essential for achieving the biological and mechanical objectives of root canal treatment.  The objective of this study was to compare the root canal cleaning effectiveness of two different rotary Nickel-Titanium instruments using scanning electron microscopy. In Group 1-cleaning and shaping was done using ProTaper to size 30 (F3) and in Group 2- cleaning and shaping was done using Liberator to size 30 (6%). Two uninstrumented teeth in each group were taken as control group. Instrumentation was done according to manufacturer’s instructions. The intracanal irrigant used after each file was 2 ml of 3.0% sodium hypochlorite. All samples were decoronated, split buccolingually for evaluation under SEM to determine canal cleanliness. All teeth were analyzed with the SEM at 20.0 kV and 500 magnifications in the middle third of the canal.  Result showed the amount of debris present after root canal instrumentation with Liberator and ProTaper were statistically insignificant

    The aim of this report is to describe a case presented with complaints of orbital pain and swelling in the right maxillary region. Patient’s history revealed that she had previously visited a dental professional, a neurologist and a general radiologist who failed to diagnose her correctly. Panoramic radiography, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) disclosed an iatrogenic displacement of a third molar and a large cystic lesion in the maxillary sinus. Patient was operated under local anesthesia. Microscopic examination of the removed specimen revealed an odontogenic cyst. The clinical characteristics of the iatrogenic displacements and the reliability of different imaging modalities were evaluated with special emphasis to the position of the dental professional

    Management of Postoperative Pain and Swelling following Mandibular third molar surgery with Newer Drugs – A Comparative Study

    Objective: Clinical comparison of efficacy of two analgesics Meloxicam and Diclofenac Potassium in reducing pain and swelling after the third molar tooth extraction. Materials and methods: 40 patients were randomly selected and divided into two groups. Group 1 received Tab. Meloxicam 15mg once a day for 3 days orally and Group 2 received Tab. Diclofenac Potassium 50mg three times a day for 3 days orally. In both groups dose was repeated for 24 hrs. Visual scale analog was used for the collection of pain intensity & with silk Suture for measurement of swelling from the patients. Results: Meloxicam had positive effect in controlling post operative pain & Swelling following mandibular third molar surgery with less side effects as compared to Diclofenac potassium. Conclusion: The study shows that Meloxicam is a suitable and safe analgesic for the relief of post-extraction pain & Swelling and is more effective than Diclofenac potassium with prolonged analgesia and minimal side effects.&nbsp

    Comparative Evaluation Of Efficacy Of Controlled Release Local Drug Delivery System And Local Irrigation Of Chlorhexidine Gluconate Following Scaling And Root Planing- Clinical Study

    Background: Periodontitis is an infectious disease of common occurrence which in majority of cases respond well to nonsurgical therapy. As periodontal disease is caused by microbes, antimicrobial therapy should be the cornerstone of periodontal treatment. So this study was designed to compare the efficacy of local irrigation with chlorhexidine following scaling and root planing (SRP) in comparison with controlled release chlorhexidine device- Periochip. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 sites from 30 patients divided into three groups, Group I (SRP), Group II (SRP + local irrigation of chlorhexidine), Group III (SRP + Periochip). All the groups were evaluated for the following clinical parameters: Plaque index, Probing pocket depth and Clinical attachment level at baseline, 3 months and 6 months. Results and Conclusion: Mean plaque index, probing pocket depth and clinical attachment level scores showed a significant reduction at the end of the study. Periochip showed significantly better results than local irrigation of chlorhexidine following SRP
