Prevalence of Streptococcus Mutans in Saliva Patients with Dental Caries

    Get PDF
Dental caries is one of the oldest diseases afflicting mankind. It occurs as a result of multiple factors which include genetic predisposition, diet, microorganisms, trace elements, tooth morphology, etc. Prevalence of caries is on the declining trend in the developed countries due to strict formulations & regulations of various oral health related programs. But, in developing countries like India dental caries is still highly prevalent. Mutans group of streptococcci is strongly associated with human dental caries & streptococcal mutans is the major aetiological agent of dental caries among mutans group of streptococci. The aim of the present study is to determine the prevalence of S.mutans in saliva of patients with or without caries

Orthodontic Preparation for Bone Graft in Cleft Palate Patients

    Get PDF
Cleft palate patients require a multidisciplinary care from birth to adulthood by teamwork of healthcare providers; the orthodontist plays a major role in this team. Filling the bony defect at the cleft area with a bony graft requires an orthodontic preparation in order to expand the collapsed palatal segments; this is best done during the mixed dentition and before eruption of the permanent canine. The best guide to proper timing of bone graft is the stage of root formation of erupting canine shown by a radiograph.  &nbsp

“Peri-procedural Management of the Cardiovascular Patient: What Every Oral Health Practitioner Should Know”

    No full text
Abstract: Dental care of patients with cardiovascular disease frequently results in management issues and dilemmas. The coordination of care between cardiologists and dentists has become increasingly important in view of the complexity related to technological and therapeutic advances in both fields. The proper care of a cardiac patient prior to a dental procedure requires the knowledge of the individual patients’ cardiovascular history, risk and the relevant guidelines. Management of certain conditions mandate expertise related to certain therapeutic agents and devices. This manuscript attempts to clarify some of the more common scenarios an oral health practitioner may encounter when treating a patient with cardiovascular disease, and provides guideline based instructions for optimal patient care outcomes. Procedural risk assessments for frequently encountered cardiac syndromes prior to commonly performed dental procedures are delineated. Management strategies for infective endocarditis (IE) prophylaxis, requirements of anti-platelet and anti-coagulant therapy and proper management of pacemaker and implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) devices are reviewed in this writing. &nbsp

Juvenile Ossifying Fibroma Of The Symphyseal Region: A Case Report

    Get PDF
Aims & Objectives: The clinical behaviour of Juvenile ossifying fibroma is variable and difficult to predict. This article reports a case of Aggressive JOF of the anterior mandible in a 15 year old boy Case description: A 15-year-old boy presented with a rapidly enlarging mass of one year duration over the mandibular anterior region. Investigations done included radiological, CT scan, histological examination, blood and biochemical tests. Enbloc resection was carried out with two year follow up. Conclusion: The aggressive nature and recurrence rate of JOF suggests that it should be treated like a locally aggressive neoplasm. &nbsp

ABSTRACT: Epidermoid cysts represent the most common cutaneous cysts. While these may occur anywhere on the body, they occur most frequently on the face, scalp, neck and trunk. A report of four cases and their clinicopathological features are described in this article

The use of Sealants in Dentistry- A review

    Get PDF
Fissure sealing was first introduced and investigated in the years 1960s-1970s. During the past few decades evidence based approaches have developed concerning the effectiveness of sealants as a primary and secondary method of caries prevention. It is generally accepted the effectiveness of sealants for caries prevention depends on long term retention. The oral healthcare professional should monitor and apply sealants to maximize effectiveness. Resin based sealants are the first choice of materials for dental sealants. Glassionomers may be used as an interim preventive agent. While cost effectiveness is an important consideration, from an ethical point of view, protection of oral health should not be viewed purely in economic terms. The objective of this review is to investigate the evidence of sealants as means of prevention of caries in children and adolescents and to enumerate a protocol for the application of sealants.   &nbsp

Rehabilitation of a Patient with Amelogenesis Imperfecta: A Case Report

    No full text
Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a diverse collection of inherited diseases that exhibit quantitative or qualitative tooth enamel defects in the absence of systemic manifestations. It can be characterized by enamel hypoplasia, hypomaturation, or hypocalcification of the teeth. AI may be associated with some other dental and skeletal developmental defects. Restoration for patients with this condition should be oriented toward the functional and esthetic rehabilitation. This article presents a case reported to post graduate department of Prosthodontics, Government Dental College and Hospital, Srinagar, India diagnosed with the hypoplastic type of AI

Management of a Complicated Parasymphyseal fracture using Biodegradable Splinting Material: Two Case Reports

    No full text
Dento-alveolar fractures involve the tooth-bearing portion of the mandible which can range from single tooth fractures to avulsions to complete segment mobility. Such fractures can be serious injuries that are difficult to diagnose. The aim of this study was report a case of complicated parasymphyseal fracture. Case Report: We present two cases: (1) 3- year old boy who reported to our department with lacerations on the chin, loose teeth, and severe pain. (2) 2½- year old girl who reported to the department with lacerations on chin. On clinical examination, bimanual palpation of the mandible revealed mobility of a segment and there was deranged occlusion. The right segment crossing the midline was mobile. Radiographic examination revealed fracture of the parasymphysis of the left side. Open reduction was carried out for the patient under general anesthesia using vicryl suture splinting of the fractured fragments and circum-mandibular wiring intraorally in the first case and intraoral wire composite splint in the second case. &nbsp

Root Canal Treatment in Mandibular Canines with Two Roots: A Case Report

    No full text
Aim & Objectives: To emphasize anatomical variation in the mandibular canine.   Case Description:   A clinical case report is presented to exemplify anatomical variation in the mandibular canine. Mandibular canine normally have single root and single canal. However two canals in mandibular canine is common anatomical variation but mandibular canine with two roots is a very uncommon finding. Endodontic treatment may sometimes fail because of failure to recognize these anatomical variations on diagnostic x-rays and treatment procedure. This paper describes a clinical case of a mandibular canine with two roots and one canal in each root.   Conclusion: These anatomical variations must be diagnosed for the successful endodontic treatment

Florid Cemento-Osseous Dysplasia - A dilemma to intervene or not?!

    Get PDF
Florid cemento - osseous dysplasia (FCOD) is a benign, non-neoplastic lesion characterized by multiple sclerosing masses within the jaw bones. We present an uncommon case of FCOD in a 37-year-old Indian woman incidentally discovered on a radiograph. She presented with bilaterally symmetrical lesions of variable radiodensities in the posterior mandible. In this asymptomatic case, the diagnosis of FCOD was made radiologically as biopsy is contraindicated. No treatment was imparted as the lesions were asymptomatic and the patient continues to be reviewed annually. The rationale of the present work is to describe this uncommon entity with only eleven reported cases noted in the literature amongst Indians. The case is unusual in its combination of the disease itself (FCOD) and the race (Indian). The confirmative role of radiography without histopathological evaluation and the need for no intervention is emphasized.   &nbsp
