An In vitro Evaluation of Microleakage of cavit restoration in Complex endodontic access cavities
Cavit is one of the most popularly used temporary filling materials in endodontics. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of a commonly used cavity varnish and matrix band on the microleakage of cavit. Sixty maxillary pre-molars were selected and access cavities were done with mesial extensions.they are then divided into six groups with ten specimens each and filled with, 1] cavit only 2]cavit after application of varnish , 3] cavit after application of matrix band, 4] cavit with a matrix band and varnish , 5] incremental deposition of cavit with the use of a matrix band and varnish, and 6] gutta percha stopping. The specimens were then placed in 2% methylene blue dye, thermocycled and evaluated for both proximal and occlusal linear microleakage, under a stereo-microscope.
Central Giant Cell Granuloma Of Maxilla: A Case Report And Literature Review
Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is a benign reactive lesion rather than benign neoplastic lesion. In 70% of cases, it is seen in mandible and the remaining 30% occurs in maxilla. Females are affected more than males and commonly seen in children and young adults. The etiology is still completely unknown but thought to be of a reactive process to some unknown stimuli. However, it has radiographic features similar to some neoplastic lesions. The incidence in the general population is very low. Central giant cell granuloma is characterized by the presence of multinucleated giant cells of varying shapes and sizes, fibrous tissue, vascular channels and macrophages. We report a case of central giant cell granuloma in the right anterior maxillary region of a 12 year old boy, who develop a painless swelling on the right side of the face since three months and gave a history of trauma at the same time. The patient was treated surgically and one year follow up did not show any sign of recurrence
Systemic origin of Halitosis: A Review
The objective of this paper is to review the systemic origins of halitosis. . Halitosis is usually reported to a clinician mostly due to social reasons than as a disease condition. More than half of the general population suffers from physiologic halitosis for some time during a normal day. The origin of pathological halitosis can be from the respiratory tract, due to systemic diseases, drug induced or due to functional abnormalities. Other sources of halitosis of systemic origin are infections, metabolic disorders, and certain foods. The compounds that produce malodor are absorbed in the bloodstream and are carried to the lungs where they enter the breath. The type of odor produced by of various odorants help in in diagnosis of the systemic disease .Halitosis can be an important diagnostic finding in diagnosing certain systemic diseases to pin point its origin. As of now the clinician own acumen and experience can be of great benefit to initially identify a condition based on the type of halitosis and then subject a patient to further investigations
‘Quad Block Appliance: Modifying Temporary Bite Raising Crown as a Fixed Functional Approach for Growth Modification in skeletal class II division-1 malocclusion: A Case Report’
Aims and Objectives: Concept of inclined plane with maxillary and mandibular blocks revolutionized the functional jaw orthopedics. However, when the design of the typical Twin Block appliance of Clark is analyzed, some deficiencies in anchorage are apparent and account for the predominantly dental rather than skeletal correction obtained by many clinicians with these appliances. Full time wear of appliance is also necessary for maximum results. Case Description: This report describes the innovative approach of modifying temporary bite rising crown in the form of Quad Block appliance for correction of skeletal class II malocclusion. In Quad block appliance, occlusal inclined plane act as guiding mechanism for mandibular growth in downward and forward direction but unlike twin block right and left blocks having inclined plane are independently cemented. Conclusion: Appliance fabrication, clinical consideration, advantages and disadvantages are discussed along with case reports
Proliferative Verrucous Leukoplakia : Rapid progression from mild dysplasia to verrucous carcinoma - A report of a case and review of literature
Aims and Objectives: To alert the clinician about this seemingly innocuous lesion which has a spectrum of clinical and histopathological stages and a malignant transformation rate of 100%. Case description: We present a case of Proliferative Verrucous Leukoplakia (PVL) of a 58 year old female patient which progressed to carcinoma despite therapy.Discussion: PVL is a unique type of oral leukoplakia which has an enigmatic etiology, aggressive behavior, high recurrence rate, with relentless progression and is refractory to therapy. Unlike other types of leukoplakia, it is minimally associated with the use of tobacco
Self reported gingival conditions, oral hygiene habits and dental attendance among pregnant women in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania
Objectives: To describe the self reported gingival conditions, oral hygiene habits and dental attendance of pregnant women in Tanzania. Methodology: A total of 289 women attending antenatal clinic at a Municipal hospital in Dar-es-Salaam were interviewed about oral hygiene practices, perceived oral symptoms, dental attendance and receiving oral health education. Results: All participants reported cleaning teeth daily and a slight majority (55%) doing so more than once per day. About two thirds (65%) experienced oral symptoms in the current pregnancy: 28% had toothache and 54% had gingival symptoms. Of those who experienced gingival symptoms 13% consulted dental practitioners, 7% used traditional medicines and 4% used mouthwashes while the majority (80%) did nothing. More than half (59%) never attended dental clinic and only about one fifth (21%) did so in the past twelve months, mostly for pain relief. The majority had received no instructions about oral health care during pregnancy. Conclusion: The majority of the women had symptoms of gingival inflammation during pregnancy and a low utilization of oral health services. They however have an established habit of cleaning teeth which, if improved, can enhance their gingival health.
Outcomes of Orthognathic Surgery-A Case Report
Orthognathic surgeries are cosmetic surgical procedures performed on the face to improve the esthetics and appearance. People are becoming more conscious about their looks and are more open to procedures, which helps in improving their appearance. More and more people visit an Orthodontist to improve the alignment of their teeth and there appearance. But there are limitations to what an orthodontist can do, and that is when the role of an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon comes into play in the form of Orthognathic surgeries. These surgical procedures (lefort 1 osteotomy)alter the architecture of the facial body skeleton and align then in suitable positions so as to attain a final facial profile that is pleasing or infact even more beautiful to look at as evident in this case report. The treatment does not change only the bony relations of the facial structures, but soft tissues as well, and by doing so, may alter the patient’s appearance. Contemporary orthognathic techniques can be applied in many fields of surgery: apart from correcting congenital and posttraumatic malocclusion
Surgical Lip Augmentation – An Overview
Over the past few decades, fuller lips have been considered a desirable trait. Numerous therapeutic options exist for aesthetic lip augmentation, ranging from temporary and permanent injectable fillers to implants and other surgical techniques. This article discusses lip augmentation, including fillers, surgery etc. as correction for this process. Composition of the various fillers is discussed in conjunction with their respective outcomes and duration of effect
Enucleation & Chemical Cauterisation: A Conservative Approachfor Aggressive Odontogenic Tumours (Unicystic Ameloblastoma)
Unicystic ameloblastoma has a distinct entity which has less aggressive behavior than with conventional ameloblastoma. In this report we have presented 3 cases of unicystic ameloblastoma. All the cases were successfully managed with enucleation. Unicystic ameloblastoma is a rare benign, locally invasive odontogenic neoplasm of young age that shows clinical, radiograph or gross feature of odontogenic cyst but histologically shows typical ameloblatomatous epithelium lining part of cyst cavity, with or without luminal / mural growth. This article presents cases of large unicystic ameloblatoma of mandibular molar ramus area which were treated by enucleation & application of carnoy’s solution for 3 minute. It also includes the importance of differential diagnosis of an odontogenic lesion if it is a tumour or cystic lesion
Treatment of Facial Palsy –A Review
A common presentation of facial palsy in childhood is acute lower motor neuron palsy. An etiological agent is not identified in a number of cases and the condition spontaneously regresses. A few cases are caused by a variety of pathologies—many of which may have significant co-morbidity and mortality associated. This article presents a review of facial palsy and its treatment
